Justin
Alright, so we have two 5 soul stone mercenaries who add fantastic range support. The convict gunslinger who can bring down a single target quickly, and the specialist who can drop templates like it's going out of style. And you can never hire them both as mercenaries, so you have to choose... (well, unless you're Viktoria) So, which one for you? And why? Obviously, it will be situational, but you can't always know what your opponent is planning, so which one will make more of a regular appearance in your games? gregdorf
I had to vote for the specialist, but that has more to do with how much I hate the Convict.
dakrulz55
A) hes more survivable than the gunslinger, because not many are above wp6 for his debuff on attacks. B)the second friekorpsman could be a librarian who goes well with any friekorpsman, while the gunslinger really has no friends to pair with. C)armor + magic res + bearskin armor? yess please. D)6:pulse of :firedevilthat hits everyone with a flamenwhurfer strike puts on the good hurt. E) the gunslinger looks really bad compared to mr flamenwhurfer. I've had the gunslinger take out a full health Teddy in a single activation...more than once. Thank you trigger happy + rapid fire + good damage rating. I'm not ready to call this one, yet. Leb14
who is the Specialist
Justin
who is the Specialist New mercenary. He costs 5 ss (just like the gunslinger) and is there for a range support role. He has the friekorps trait, so he can't join a crew if another model was hired as a mercenary (so you can't use both him and the gunslinger except in outcast crews where you would not be hiring the gun slinger as a mercenary, but as an outcast). He has a flamethrower with range 8, Cb 5, and damage 2/3:blast:blast/4:blast:blast. He has a whole slew of other abilities (like every model in the game) but most notably he has really good defensive stuff and he can "detonate tanks" and make a flamethrower strike against every model (friend and foe) within 6" that doesn't produce blasts. But if he detonates tanks, he loses his gun for the rest of the game.
Headcase2
I've had the gunslinger outperform the specialist nearly every game, but I've been playing the gunslinger in so many games that I'm eager to get a somewhat proper replacement. And I often play Vickies, so no need to choose most of the time. Bring on the cheese.

Note that Freikorps ignore all blasts and pulses themselves, so he can blow up in the middle of his buddies and they can all laugh at the barbequed foes at their feet. This is true, and good to keep in mind when playing Victoria. But when deciding between the gunslinger and the specialist for, say, a resser list, it's definitely a consideration. I like my zombies untoasted.
Headcase2
I've gotten quite fond of the smell of burning zombie. Especially when the hair begins to sizzle. You should try the ultimate blast crew: Sonnia (with extra soulstone to stoke the furnace), a specialist and loads of suicidal witchlings. Takes a while to set up, but 20+ damage (the triggering flamethrower attack, then all of the witchlings and finally Sonnia's death pulse)on your opponent's master without a single flip against him is hilarious. Your crew will be dead as well of course, but sacrifices have to be made for the greater burn.

Rathnard
For me, it's the gunslinger; 1. I already have the Gunslinger model, and I actually like him. I gave him a pink night cap and painted his pistols to look like toy cap guns, so he fits my Neverborn crews quite nicely. 2. I can't take Jack Daw if I were to take a Specialist. And Jack Daw is a pants full of awesome. 3. The Gunslinger's triggers plus suppressive fire are really, really good.
kbdrand
I believe Von Schill as a henchman can take both models.
dakrulz55
the specialist i think gots more survivability than the gunman. being wp5 plus stubborn helps with opp tricks to kill. also having armor and anti blast is sweet. also hesitaton is really good for survivability. also you got good synergy with other friekorpsman (librarian and von schill), whos the gunslinger got as friends?
