Regarding the new 2 player set..

Is the rule book the full book or just the rules only book?  Looking at getting into this but on the fence still.  Have Puppet Wars and was considering making the plunge.  Also what is required beyond expanding your crews.. such as more books and what not?  Just wondering how expanded rules are handled and what cost may be involved down the road besides the models.

The starter comes with a walk-through booklet which teaches you as you play (similar to the puppet wars pattern book). It also includes a free download of the rules manual (which is just rules).

Down the road you will likely want more models. The two player set plus a starter will give you plenty to field a legal Crew, and if the starter shares a faction with the two player set you will really have some decent options.

In terms of things besides models you may want, the Generalist Upgrade Deck is a good buy as it will give you lots of good upgrade options. Books won't really be needed (as you will have the digital rules manual) but they are nice for story and picking out future models.

Hope that helped. :)

Set Contains

  • 2 Crews (8 models)
  • 8 Stat Cards
  • 2 Upgrade Cards
  • 2 Quick Reference Cards
  • Quick Start Booklet
  • Free Digital Rules Manual
  • 2 Fate Decks
  • 2 Measuring Tapes

I'm not sure what the Digital Rules Manual will consist of, but I would imagine that the Digital Rules Manual is similar to the physical Rules Manual, which contains only rules for the game, and no model rules or background stories.

Sigh, I really should refresh before posting...

Thank you for the quick response.. so what besides fluff does the full rule book offer?  Army lists?

The full rulebook will have:

Rules for Wave 1* models (essentially army lists).

General background stories and short individual background stories for each model entry.

More art.

*Wave 2 models are in the Crossroads book, with Wave 3 models coming out in the new Shifting Loyalties book to be released at Gencon.  Note that models come with their rules on stat cards in the model's packaging (assuming you buy new models and not older versions of models or second hand models), so you don't need the model rules in the books to play.  Having the model rules available can help you plan your purchases, so I do suggest getting the full rulebook, Crossroads, and Shifting Loyalties at some point in time.

Wave 1 & 2 models are also available in the respective Arsenal Decks, though those Arsenal Decks are primarily meant for players with older models from the previous version of Malifaux to be able to play with their models without having to rebuy the models for stat cards.  As a new player this shouldn't be an issue for you unless you buy models secondhand or visit the 'out of production bin' at your game store (which may still have some version 1 models available).

Also note models come with stat cards, so models come with their rules.

Which means you could do with the starter boxes free digital copy of the rules. But the big rulebook does bring you fluff and the possibility to read all the other cards and stats.
