SpiralngCadavr Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 So, I've got my Tara crew, which has become easily my favorite/most played. I like the aesthetic and my paint jobs, and am probably not going to change the paint jobs much, but I'm feeling like the basing isn't carrying its weight. It's functional, and more than plain, but I've done some sets with sculpted bases and some with inserts, and these just aren't feeling awesome for my primary crew. Whatever I go with, I'm likely to use the same base for Leveticus and (if I decide to get him) Jack. So, first option- suggestions on how to modify the existing bases to make them punchier? I was thinking maybe using the ones I have and using filler/spackle (sp?) to add some variety in texture I'm having trouble getting an interesting badlands look- any good inserts I could swap to? I was thinking maybe fully sculpted swamp stuff, but I'm working on a badlands board, so would lean away from that. The only thing I'm completely opposed to is any sort of urban/industrial thing, because I already have my guys with that look. Any other suggestions? Thoughts? Ratsmitglied Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 The following might suit for fully scuplted badlands: http://shop.microartstudio.com/wasteland-c-3_72.html - wasteland http://shop.microartstudio.com/desert-c-3_89.html - Desert http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=79_33_57&zenid=6665bd9405ca798ce81d52f9d57c6d43 - Desert Mesa http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=79_33_78&zenid=6665bd9405ca798ce81d52f9d57c6d43 - Rocky Bluff Just a few ideas from Secret Weapon and Micro art studio... There are a few other options from both that you could look at that fit this type of aesthetic as well 1 Quote
SpiralngCadavr Posted February 12, 2015 Author Report Posted February 12, 2015 Thanks! Those wasteland ones are definitely a direction I could go in... Quote
Ratsmitglied Posted February 13, 2015 Report Posted February 13, 2015 You're welcome - I have some of all those base styles in either square or round which is why I thought of them. Quote
TJUK Posted February 13, 2015 Report Posted February 13, 2015 I did bases similar to the wasteland ones on my space marine army. I used crackle paint, you can get one specifically for basing minis or a general art version. You basically slop it on in a thick layer and as the base dries you get that dried, cracked dirt effect. It works out significantly cheaper than buying resin bases and has similar results. 1 Quote
RagingRodian Posted February 14, 2015 Report Posted February 14, 2015 A word of warning about the Micro Art bases- I picked up a bunch of the cobblestone ones to use for my Outcasts and they were all noticeably undersized for the size they were supposed to be. They were very nice looking bases though, so if you and your opponents don't care if the bases are a few millimeters off then by all means use them! By contrast, I picked up some Fenris bases for my Collodi crew and they were all oversized. Again, a few millimeters here and there may not concern you. All of my Secret Weapon bases have been dead on target for sizes. In any case, I am sure your models will look fantastic! 1 Quote
