Summoning totems

Does a 'totem' start the game with its master,or does it have to be summoned? I can't find clear rules on summoning in the RB.

Typically you hire the totem, so it will start the game. A few of the masters can summon their totems. If they do summon they don't have to have hired it.

Depends. Basically a totem is a model designed on synergies. In general if you want to bring a totem you pay their SS cost at hiring, just like every other non-leader model in the game.

Now, there are a few totems that can be summoned, Molly's Necrotic Machine bring the main one that springs to mind. However Molly can only summon the Necrotic Machine if she takes one of her limited upgrades, as her base smon spell only lets her summon belles.

However there is nothing intrinsic on the totem or master that allows them to summon or be summoned.

He can't summon it. If you want to bring the Brass Arachnid you have to hire it.
