I always find his heavy italian accent too distracting to watch his videos... thus i'm frequently watching others.

Something that quickly appeared to me in your osl is that it seems you properly painted with opaque color. I found that completly painting the model and then glazing over in some very very thin glazes produced results that i liked (and stressed me out because i might be ruining a completely painted model. Needed to learn to trust the process).

Yeah I wanted the glow to Look more unreal but not to the extent I managed to pull off.

Got the next OSL Project primed so with all the good advice and more patience Fingers crossed that it works:)

The accent is an aquired Taste to be sure but so probably is mine :D I like his methods frame of mind and the Aspect that he always has an eye on the clock while painting.i can relate there

Hello all! I came across this painting challenge whilst looking for a bit of inspiration for my 2e Izamu mini that has been on my shelf for ages. I've never played malifaux, but bought a load of the minis a while ago because they were gorgeous. I thought I'd join in with this to get some of them painted, get some feedback and hopefully build a couple of cool looking crews. And who knows I may actually get to pay a game with them one day! Anyway, this is my Izamu I finished last night. Looking forward to seeing what everyone else has been working on!

    Caedrus, reporting in!

OK, fellow painters, an apology is owed. I completely zoned out and forgot to upload my photos!

I even had them finished, with about three hours to spare before Feb hit us!

Here they are (reporting 21SS and meeting my January pledge), and apologies for the lateness!

    QQoEp04.jpg

    Jj8odwI.jpg

Some modified Necropunks to start off with, for 10SS. I had all sorts of bits missing for these guys, which I found in the bottom of a long-forgotten eBay box, and promised myself I'd paint them to finish out my Amalgams.

    hCtjGX4.jpg

Earl Burns was next, at 3SS. This guy was my pilot-piece for my Infamous keyword. It's not my favourite sculpt, but I wanted to see how well steel-blue /and navy blue would work together. I added a sculpted tricorne, because the Infamous theme I'm working on is a bit nautically-inspired!

    t5GCi2h.jpg

Finally, for January, is the Alt sculpt, Johana Creedy, at 7SS. The Infamous keyword will feature these copper-and-steel bases as a unifying theme, along with the steel-and-navy blues. I messed around a little here with some OSL, just for fun and practice!

So, that's my January efforts, I'll try to get my photos up in a more timely fashion for February!

I look forward to seeing everyone's Bloody Valentine efforts, and I'll post some feedback for January, soon!

    Stay well, my friends.

    Caedrus.

P.S.: Wow, my photography is dreadful.

These are really cool Paintjobs. What's nagging about photography?

On the topic of OSL one of the best resources to get good results in no amount of time is Juan Sanz on Instagram

Marco ofc has the proper art background and theory in place that is necessary to know when diving deeper into that rabbit hole.

@JordiFortlWelcome to the community, already saw your work on Instagram. Really like your choice of color and placement of light. Really looking forward to see what your doing with the rest of the keyword.

How are the artist series of scale75 in terms of texture buildup? With my schmincke heavy body white I have to be rather careful to not apply too much texture onto the mini.

On the topic of February challenge I finished the last Viktoria of the core box but I am seemingly unable to upload pictures due to a

If you watch Squidmar’s video that Hawkoon shared, he covers this at about the 10:30 mark

the idea is that as you move away from the light source (the object in her hand) the light will quickly lose intensity.

so the light near her hand and up her arm should be brightest, but by the time it gets to the ground - or even near her head - it should be much fainter.

Marco’s paint job here is … god level … and he really lays this point out well

What I wouldn’t give for half of Marco’s talent ;)

Okay this is believe-based but i would always watch Marco over any painter right now, present streamers of course not included.

I know this video, but there is a difference in "i watched this video last april" to i try to paint this in under half an hour :Dbefore Lunch is done. But i promise to make the next OSL better

    Hi all!

I'm new here so I hope to be able to enjoy my passion with you, which is to paint these little beings ;)), and thanks to my dear colleague and great painter diddick who showed me the way.

Well I would like to start being a little brave and finish materializing my Jezda gang with the models of The Damned, Grave Goo and a Moorwraith. I will send photos of the evolution

This past week I finished a Surveyor, but I understand that this one is not going to count...;)

I basically use SCALE 75 Artist paint, I just love the colors and how they mix on the models.

Aw damn mate, that looks great :D

Last week was February, so for me it would be allright to count that model for February.

OSL is IMO more about painting light than painting color.

Generally speaking OSL is battling against the overall light (normally zenithal lightning). If the miniature isn't stand in the dark OSL will be more visible in the shadow areas. And in reality we don't have such stark colors like on a lit stage in a concert room. Nice lighting on open airs happens after the sun has set. And the reflected colors depend on the surface (black absorbs all color for example).

So my go to painting OSL is first to paint the zenithal light and then paint the areas where the OSL hits lighter too. Lighter but not more colorful. And only when IÄm satisfied with the values I might add some color to the OSL. The values are correct if it looks correct on a black and white picture.

I checked your pictuers and in b&w you don't see much of lightend areas. You painted a lot of green but not the corresponding lighter values. IMO htere should be less areas lightend but those lightend should be stronger, and less green from the OSL.

    Hope that helps.

(If you have some questions I will answer them via PM in german. Much easier for me).

    9VlZbJZ.jpeg

I think i get what you mean :) to be super honest i spend like 10-15 minutes on the Lighting and for that it looks okayish when on the table. it was sort of a tryout for a model i want to paint somewhen this year when i have more time, so the Feedback is very welcome, thank you.

    1 hour ago, Hawkoon said:

If I may supply feedback on OSL, you need to take into account fall-off and intensity of the lightsource. Think of the light as a sphere with the source in it's centre. The light will be most intense close to the object and less intense far away from it. The most intense light should be near pure white with a hint of the lights colour. The true colour of the light will only show when you get a bit further from the source, and fade to the real colours of the model. (worth noting though is that metals distort reflections, and even though the barrel of the gun is far away from the source it will still have a quite strong reflection of the OSL light.)

Looking at your photos I think you have too saturated light near the object, that doesn't cover enough of the model either, so it appears more like a paint smear than actual light from the object. The fall-off should also be shortened on her right arm and gun as well as her left leg and the ground.. Doing brush-only OSL is very hard, so I would highly reccomend using an airbrush just to get a good lightmap for the fall-off.

    Hope this helps🤞

Apart from the OSL the rest of the model is looking really good, so I hope I'm not contributing to messing up the work already done...

Edit: If you would rather listen to the pros, Squidmar has a good explanaition here: https://youtu.be/4DR573EnCSU?t=546

Now my language barrier is finally kicking in: so let's see if i get you:

    a) the light near the source should be more white, or much whiter than any major reflection

    b) light near the source should still cover most of the lighted object while still not being saturated as much as the areas further away

    c) i don't really know about the fall off: you are saying the light should cover less space on her left leg right arm and the ground?

i watched some videos about OSL, but i should have watched one before painting. i am grateful for the feedback and not terrible sorry about the model, she still looks allright. i don't think i will change anything about her now, i'll just Carry over the experience to the next model where this might apply.

I purposefully don't airbrush now because i airbrushed before i painted with a brush, i am trying to develop a sense for using brushes :D

  8. allright minimum Pledge for this month looks like:

    rIxg4jL.jpg

I'll just start right now i guess. I think the rest depends on which Parcel comes when, if nothing arrives i'll try an have another go at painting nexus

Does Old McCabe net 30SS because he is two Models? Feels like cheating

    Okay rambling about paints:

I started on Vallejo and build like have desk full and then for some Reason bought a lot of Citadel stuff as well. When Playing Warhammer i was heavily into metallics (go Grey Knights etc.) which I am avoiding at the moment to further my skills (i hope)

Since Playing Malifaux i am  using Vallejo and Liquitex Inks as well as GW Contrast Paints on a Greyscale Sketch (See Picture above) because it's the least time consuming while effortless method of painting for me at the moment. I go back on the highlights with stock paints. Thus i am using a lot of water / matte varnish / glaze medium as thinners.

For Airbrush i thin everything using Vallejo Airbrush Thinner / Flow Aid / Airbrush Cleaner (yeah intentionally after i unintentionally grabbed the wrong bottle and it worked kind of good).

My biggest issue is: i bought Kymera Artist Acrylics and a S******* of oil paints, but i can't for the life of me make a start on new techniques. Also i get a headache or simply get pretty drugged from most Oil Colour solvents 😕

so to sum up: never refrain from mixing stuff from different brands, you can always learn a lot and EVERYTHING does go through an airbrush eventually if you are pigheaded enough

No @Gheist that is the 75mm one. Check it out -

@Hobby Wyrd - I think Gheist's call of putting it at 25ss sounds fair though.

However, just for clarification sake, can someone tell me what the standard base size is for a TOS Titan (said the man who only knows 'faux :) )

Another option would be to call it 30ss, since it is over double the size of the 32mm version (and she's a master - thus, 15x2). But I'll leave @Gheist to make the final call on that.

@Hobby Wyrd@Shock & Awe i am good with either, so call her 30SS :Di am really curious how she looks painted

Can give you measurements of Titan Base this evening when i am at home, have to unpack one

  10. Hi everyone :D

I have noticed that not everybody who has pledged has filled out the soulstone Reporting form that @Shock & Awe has been kind enough to supply.

So, to remember you of this: at the end of the month, when finished painting stuff for the month ---> take 1 minute to fill in the Soulstone reporting form, makes all our lives easier. Well mostly shock's and mine, but nevermind :D So please go ahead and do that until let's say 15th of February at which day i will start PMing you like the horribly annoying person i am.

  11. It is my honour to introduce month number two of this years painting challenge, copy everything from recent threads and boldly state that i made a contribution.

From when i write this, january has been a crazy good month in the painting challenge with so many awesome works shared, i am pretty hyped for the rest of 2022!

If you are new to this, the rules for this competition are HERE

This month Masterclass theme will be my favourite money sink:       P A I N T

Tell us what paints you use, what type, brand, how and if you dilute them and with what, do you mix them yourself, paint from the pot, what would like to try out, maybe someone in here has got you covered

  12. Hm from my point of view, as we so far had a 7-8 player meta (so something like a contained ecological niche kind of thing) my 2cents of thinking:

You got to work much harder playing in Keyword only. Especially in specific matchups, to the point where some matchups are barely playable for one side if you stay in Keyword (there is the idea that if you declare a faction you have 8 Crews and can tailor to your opponent and pool, but there were limited amounts of crews in the beginning).

Now enter versatile and OOK: If you do not play much, it's much easier to go into the forum (or ask someone you think knows better) and pick up your factions all-star models and insert them into every Crew. Saves you learning, and due to fine balancing issues indeed makes your crews stronger i guess.

I think the question is what kind of player you are and how much time you honestly have to spare for studying the game. In every Tabletop there is a meta and in every tabletop there are people who go copy paste play with different amounts of success and people who really think hard about alternatives and try to make them work and maybe figure out a way to break the meta to some degree. I think the latter one makes you a better player in the long run, but i guess if you have like 3 hours every week for thinking and playing faux then bringing dual rider lawyer stewart saves you stress and frustration.

Due to my recent expierences in a bigger meta would say: Either there is more frequent finetuning needed, thats what would be best for competitive regular gamers and would include imho stuff like taking away fixed +2 to initiative from some models or:

the Cost for hiring ook is not high enough. I am at a loss to make a suggestion, but paying more stones would only narrow everything down even more than it acutally is, so it has be something to do with the in game efficiency maybe? like having them take a low Willpower and make them get slow if they fail it. To show they are not funtioning as well in another crew?

Really not looking forward to the golem... That NMM just takes a lot of time and patience.

On the subject of Broken's their tactical action should only damage if the opponent fails the duel.  How it currently stands with 4 damage no matter what is flipped in resistance to whatever the broken is summoned from is pretty NPE for the opponent.

I feel like changing it to a model in contact suffers 2 Damage instead of all models in base contact would be another solution. But maybe your version is better because the opponent can then at least try to pass the easier duel.

I also would like to have an incentive to even use the brocken's melee once in a while, because it's an awesome attack, but unless the opponent has armor/incorp/shielded, i just do not use it

  15. Okay because i just finished painting them and apart from being pretty boys:

After the McCabe1 Master Nerf, i feel his best minions, the Ruffians and the Cryptologists deserve a buff.

Ruffians need HTK, HTW, Armor+1, Disguised, or get shielded when they get an upgrade something along those lines otherwise they are without function (and might be even then)

Cryptologists, apart from being in Cadmus Keyword for some... i mean the bonus with the trigger: in Keyword, i get to draw a Card and have another model take an action for a 9 of Mask and otherwise... might give them just Movement 5? And perhaps a trigger or two on the melee? Drain Magic? Hole in the World? something along those lines?     I mean i can't rule out that i am missing something (again) that they are REALLY good at in Keyword. but right now they are Shelf models apart from introduction games for beginners

And i think it wouldn't be terrible to readjust McCabe1 a bit, he lost bite....

    EELS

    DSC01650.thumb.JPG.b1f998c93424f9d1266efb24c497e75a.JPG

I love these guys, the model design is cool and they have neat rules on the tabletop. I have 2 more to paint from the Nightmare box but between 4 physical models and a load of tokens I think I should be fine for eels regardless of how many times they manage to split.

Then finally capping off the month I ended up painting Horomatangi

    DSC01645.thumb.JPG.ed56a3df74f44ab01ac330cd5d1ad01e.JPGDSC01646.thumb.JPG.8ba1091fcbc9a422e2297549836b9b5d.JPGDSC01647.thumb.JPG.697e86cf8399b0d5b568dad270fa89dd.JPG

The original plan was just to get some work done on his base and have the model fully prepped (he had some big gaps to greenstuff and a fair few mold lines) but once he was all sprayed up it was hard to resist getting some paint on the big lad.

With Horomatangi thrown in that brings me to 63 points of Other Side painted up for the month. Any further painting done this month on the other side I will try to limit to pre painting some bases and squad trays for next month (which might be tricky as I have run out of brown and need to get some more)

Damn you :D everytime you post pictures i am tempted to start painting my Gibbering Hordes as well.

    Love the Eels !
