Real question for you folks, how do you handle burnout, and lack of motivation to keep painting? Been struggling with that for the past few months, and was wondering how you folks deal with it.

I think i just don't paint for a while, also don't look at your instagram, cause there is too much proof that other people are painting.

Read the fluff, play the Game, or watch some videos about painting with different stuff then you have tried before.

Also i have a regular (3 out 4 weeks) weekly painting session with 2-4 people which always helps to smooth over the rough holes in my motivation, cause you sit, you talk, you paint something, cause people.

So just in time to finish another month of tyrant level

My Bete Noire almost completes my Redchapel crew, if it wasn't for the man himself (which will be the first faux model of the new month).

As for my current photography setup. I took craftworld studio's advise and invested in a light ring that illuminates my models quite well. Sadly I'm still shooting with quite a dated camera. But oh well, don't have the money to replace it as I'm spending it on miniature 😅

i think it looks good enough for me ;)

what i am still thinking about what to do to make the stand even darker / less visible, weren't there some light absorbing pigments around ?

  3. Hello everybody!

This is the August Thread. Paint a lot of miniatures and Post Photos here.

This months masterclass is Relaxation. Try to take it easy and don't get swamped by all the heat weather and life wise, paint some minis, have a good life

    cheers

    Hagen

Lovely work @Kogan Style those Umbra models look amazing- I'm a big fan of the purple/blue combo!

I've finished my Botanists- I have to say that I didn't particular enjoy painting these- wondering if anyone had the same experience? I think it was to do with the type of plastic- so much of the detail was slightly off on the model. Anyway, I bashed through them. My favourite is the gremlin!

Yes somehow they felt a bit off to paint, can't really put my finger on it though. Some Parts were also quite hard to reach on them

  5. July has facing me several challenges Timewise, not least of which is cataloguing (?) my 40K Collection to sell them off and make Room for more Terrain, so i can hold 12 man Tournaments in my garden without borrowing stuff

I'll be either painting Zipp and his Crew or Rest of Oni and/or all the titles that are starting to build a little group of their own on my desk.

I have built primed and based all of my Malifaux Minis.

I have two Outcast, Two Explorer and 1 1/2 Thunders Keywords to go before completing all three factions.

I Hope i can call it quits after and stay with those factions to focus more on Tournaments and Community Building.

Probability is i start Bayou though

    Have a nice one everybody

Caedrus, reporting in with a (late in the month) WIP!

    ZJOxk5m.jpg

I've finally, finally found a gap in my workload. Time to pick up the paintbrush!

These are my alt-Plague efforts. It's kind of hard to choose a colour scheme for an incorporeal, semi-skeletal Cheshire cat!

I have a question for you, my fellow painters: If I were to put a fluorescent glow on these (for the plague effect), what colour?

Yellow? Green? Light blue? Darker blue? Magenta? Purple? Let me know what you think!

    Stay well, keep painting!

    Caedrus.

I always thought Yellow to Green with a glow for thr Plague Keyword

The markers are 3D and "fancy" with the logo of the faction, so I'll count them when I'm painting them as I plan to add a nice gradient to it, not just spraying the thing. I was asking because of the sheer amount of the (also 3D) condition tokens, but I'd be happy to bargain a 10 piece = 5 ss for a month, if that works. Hell, I'd go with 10 piece = 2ss, too. :D

i'll be honest a this point, before this becomes a post about 3D Markers (zzzZZZzzz), if you are in doubt, give us a picture, then we just decide on the basis of that? I mean if you don't meet your pledge otherwise, sure do markers.

Before you paint them a word from experience: don't use markers you cannot stand models on precisely (Schemes for example with protruding 3D Logos are bad), you cannot actually play proper Malifaux with those

I have to admit, June is not treating me well. There is a lot going on currently on many fronts in my life, so painting became the last thing to care about.

I am very slowly progressing with my buddy's smurf which I plan to finish by the weekend. I will pledge Youko only for the rest of the month, totaling a 20 soulstone for June (if I understand that the smurf counts for 5).

Have some work in progress photos, he is still missing shading on his left arm and the gun. I also officially bow down to everyone mastering edge highlights, this was a nightmare.

First layer of coats and edges, first layer of shading:

Current state, with more shading, highlights, edges somewhat cleaned up, base completed. Missing: finishing the backpack, shading on both arms, left pauldron and gun:

Haha you painted a smurf! why would you do that? you are in heaven. Don't dip your feet into hell. Hardline highlighting Spacemarines is not any better after 400 of them, believe me. It also doesn't matter which colour you paint them in, they are basically bricks. Looks good and clean though.

  9. On a sidenote, as everyone posted their Flower and Showers stuff in the May Post:

If you are late with posting your pledge, or have kept a super secret painting project hidden from the eyes of mortal people:

If it's later than the third day of the new month, just Post everything in the new Month's Post. This will allow for an easier transition :D

  10. My first entry for June are thos two gentlemen:20220606_142509.thumb.jpg.b3426457a332448c6bcb40a6383eb471.jpg20220606_142537.thumb.jpg.0ab74142884cb6a51fbe912852ff507b.jpg which i rather like. Now I am gonna touch this months Masterclass Theme on a model to model basis because of the variance that i have in Workflows.

With those two Gentlemen, i started out by priming Black, and then doing 3-4 Airbrush Layers dark grey to pure white to set lighting.

After that i set aside the colours that i was sure i wanted use which amounted to like 15 Pots and started Airbrushing what i thought i could do without strain. this amounted all the blue/violet smoke on both models as well as both models main clothes colour. i did multiple layers of each colour, mixing to create the transitions.

i often feel that doing finer details with an airbrush creates more work than it does do, so i switch to brush at this point and block out all the other colours

    (Skin/hair/shoes/gloves/buttons/staff/glasses/shirts/ties)

Then if i really like a miniature, like those two, i go back with the original airbrush colours, mix them with darkblue or violet or black ink and reinforce all the dark shadows, which i always feel brings the original idea back way better than highlighting does.

than i painted shadows on the rest and highlighted everything by mixing with ivory/white/skin/lightgrey. I went back with white and did highlights on the blue stuff and glazed them over with the original colours to get more variance. I think i painted stuff with some sort of pink or other.

i then painted the bases by applying contrast paint and drybrushing the one, while i just painted random patterns on the other with stuff that was on my pallet for the other base, which was the most fun thing to do.

    and done :D

hope this is not too boring to read, have a sucessful and awesome june everyone

This Titania looks great, the base is perfect, this kind of details make want to go down the 3D printing rabbit hole XD

About the backgrounds, I like the black one more.

In my experience, completely black backgrounds are easier and more forgiving when taking pictures, there's no need to worry with the shadows projected by the mini, and just reducing the exposure is usually enough to make the whole thing pop.

While with white background, for a very good pic, it needs either a lightbox, or at least 2 light sources with something to diffuse the light (some light white fabric or oven paper), so the shadows are not very strong, plus increasing the exposure, to "make the whites more white", this usually affects the colors of the mini.

Lots of painters use a white bg, and looks great, I'm just saying that is harder to work than with black bg, or it's just that i just don't have the right setup.

For me as a photography Noob i always feel that the white background makes the photos look more professional overall whereas the black makes the Miniature look better than it actually looks in real life.

I have the impression that minatures with lower overall contrast/valuedifference look better on black, while if you have extrem highlights white works just as well (or better). While that is of course totally subjective ;)

oh btw @TimH i really love the Lady Yummy Base, gj :D

  13. Wow we are approaching the half Time of this years show.

On a personal note i am very happy about the awesome work and Contribution of everyone, it's pretty much mindblowing

Take Care to fill out your Soulstone reportforms everyone @Shock & Awe and myself will have a look for gaps at the end of this Month i guess.

For this months Masterclass's then, i would like to adress the methodology if painting a miniature. This might seem metaphysical, but i have always taken that as the most important bit from most tutorials, the HOW to order the different steps to get a good result, so if you guys would share your workflow (maybe do pictures) i know that some of you have hidden whole decks of Cards up their sleeves :D

As for my Pledge, i will paint in some stuff that we need for our next videos and then continue Oni

Have fun and good luck to everyone!

So, ehm, well this ain't a gremlin alright. But I said I'm gonna paint whatever I like from my Backlog, so 😅.

This piece was a big milestone somehow and I never planned it to be and I don't know how it got to that stage. Things just made sense and "worked": Creating texture and glazing it over, creating more contrast in the skin by glazing some purple and reds in, putting focus into the right spots etc...

This happens to be the best miniature I've painted to this date.
