  1. Interestingly, I would always take at least a couple of Punks with Nicodem. I think their speed, while dreadful, isn't crippling with Nico, the Fog can really help and they form a nice solid core to keep Nico safe. I find his speed isn't so much an issue with him getting into position, rather he gets outpaced. Bricking him up with a couple of punks can really help. I generally summon Belles in play if I need them. They are undoubtedly excellent, if that's what you need, but I've had too many games where they just kind of bimble around not doing much. I dislike Canine Remains with Nico, only taking one or two for a guaranteed turn one Mindless Zombie or two. If I'm wanting speed, I tend to get much better mileage out of Necropunks. I do absolutely agree though that Crooked Men are generally underestimated. Again, something I tend to summon in if I need to, as a Crooked Man popping up out of nowhere can really throw a spanner in the works. I also agree that the Grave Spirit is the superior choice, but I run with Vultures. It's a gamblers choice, as some games it'll be worth its weight in gold, in more games it'll do bob all. The reason Nico is my favourite master is his flexability. You'll get results from him once you figure out your own style with him.
  2. Either list is pretty decent in my opinion. List 1 is pretty straightforward, and I like it a lot actually the more I think about it. Think I'll give a very similar list a run out. There's a lot for Nicodem to do, but he's a flexible master and should enjoy the surprising number of options a list like this will give him. I like the second list less. There's less pressure on Nicodem as there's more stuff the crew can do for themselves, but I can see there being less long term options for Nico. What I might consider, is dropping a PZ and a vulture from the first list and adding Sybelle and an extra stone of pool. She's a good little trouble shooter and that extra stone might just ease the pressure on Nico a little. But welcome to the faction, and I hope you enjoy Nicodem !
  3. Just to add, this trade went off without a hitch. Well, other than the inordinate length of time it took Royal Mail to find Texas. But Kreation was a pleasure to deal with, and very understanding when the books I sent took an age to arrive. I would trade again in a heartbeat.
  4. Love the palette on Seamus, and the painting style is right up my street.
  5. We had a 40 point brawl, and intended to get some decent snaps and do a big battle report. As usual, we got all carried away and forgot to take any notes and very few pictures. But you can see the steam engine in the top right. The roofs are off the buildings as Kirai was making the most of being a spirit, and the fences were flattened at the hands of Danzilla, who is the smaller but more destructive human just creeping into the picture at the top.
  6. Warmachine will always be my first true love. But I roll Malifaux around in my head when I should be concentrating at work. The bit of games I like the most, is the story that unfolds around the rolls or flips, and it's that aspect where Malifaux really shines for me. Crews are the right size and I like pretty much the entire range of minis. I like the mechanics and the wild swings of fate that the Jokers provide. Also, I have yet to play a pillock at Malifaux, something I sadly cannot say about WM or 40k (admittedly you're fishing in a bigger pond at that point, and I'm not having a pop at WM or 40k players, I am one.) It's not perfect, but it is certainly my favourite.
  7. There's a wealth of good tips in this thread. What I would suggest, is to spend some time planning your colour choices for a crew. Limit yourself to 3 or 4 colours per model, and maybe 6 or 8 colours across a crew. Sure, you'll have a bit of wiggle room for details and things, but I'm really talking about the general colour scheme for your crew. Get your decent brushes etc, then go on to get your paints built up a few at a time as you work through your pewter mountain. Make sure you have a highlight mixer. White or bonewhite or whatever you prefer, and a shader such as black or charred brown. If you're doing anything on a budget, keep it simple and plan before you spend.
  8. Nicodem mainly, with a healthy splash of McMourning. That being said, I've spent all weekend painting Seishin...
  9. It's an airfix kit of all things. I daresay there'll be numerous games happening around this bad boy soon.
  10. My partner in crime has just finished work on a cracking piece of terrain. Both our boards are fairly weird west at the moment, so we're really starting to look at Steampunking them up a bit. There's more pics and a review on the blog in my sig if you're interested in seeing a little more, but I love this thing and though people might be interested in injecting a little mechanical madness into their tables.
  11. Premeasuring is the handicap in my house. I've played various games for years, and can eyeball 6, 8, 10, 12 and 24 inches pretty consistently. My wife plays and she can't do this, so we tend to say she can premeasure just to balance things up. I like the tension of making tough calls about if things are in range or not, and I like the narrow escapes when someone is an inch short of burning me to death, so by preference I'd like to not see premeasuring as a rule. My other half doesn't spend any time at all measuring threat ranges. If a charge or a spell she is considering casting looks a bit questionable range wise, it gets a quick measure before the ap is spent. If someone is measuring everything all the time, and getting all excited about being in the right position by a millimetre, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest they might not be the funnest opponent in the world regardless of premeasuring or not.
  12. I know nothing about snowstorm. Does it's "Eat" thing sacrifice you, or is it a 0 action that it can take when it kills something ? If it's the latter, maybe a nurse ?
  13. Ste and I are up for this, assuming we ever stop debating what masters to bring and actually make a decision.
  14. It's a great way to play, especially if underhand dealing, bribery, threats and out and out begging are involved
  15. For a general kind of "all comers" 25 stones list, I'd probably go with something like... Nicodem, The Undertaker -- 7 Pool Grave Spirit [1ss] Madame Sybelle [6ss] Punk Zombie [5ss] Punk Zombie [5ss] Rotten Belles [4ss] Maybe chuck a Canine remains or two in for access to a couple of easy mindless zombies and have a lower pool. Punk Zombies are pretty bread and butter for Nicodem, so a blister of them is never going to be a bad buy, similarly a blister of Belles will be one of the best value purchases you'll make as a resser player. In a list like this, you've got both a decent core and some spares for summons. As much as I love the Vulture, I think the Grave spirit is a better option by a fair margin. Sybelle is in there because I think she's a lovely model who is dirt cheap for what she does, and is halfway between a Punk and a Belle. Stick the spirit to her and she's one hell of a tarpit. But essentially, at 25 stones, a pack of punks and a pack of belles is solid and cheap. GS is ace for a single stone. Or the Dead Rider and a load of dogs. Gives you less wiggle room, but it's funny for the occasional game.
  16. I've got an English copy of the Cadwallon book, and am interested in the NE Teddy and in NE Justice, but I'm in good ol' blighty so I'm not sure if we can make this work. But, have a think and let me know, and we might be able to make a deal.
  17. 1) Killjoy. He's a beast in melee and before he's on the table, he brings an element of psychological warfare. Then, when he's out he's a menace to everyone on the table potentially. And when he's killed, three corpse counters in a lovely neat pile. 2) Necropunks. These little lads do it all for a budget price. What's not to love about quick, significant flurrying models that gang up on stuff and make it slow ? 3) Sybelle. Half Belle, half Punk Zombie and a miniature I love. Terrifying, shrieking, regenerating loveliness. 4) Dead Rider. So many options, so much usefulness. Excellent model, cracking rules and always worth his stones. 5) Flesh Construct. I love the big lads. Surprisingly fast, tough as old boots and fair in a fight. Never been disappointed by Flesh Constructs, either summoned or hired.
  18. I could be interested in the Infinity stuff, well, some friends of mine could be. Got any ideas on price for it all ? If you can give me an idea about what you'd be looking for for each faction, I'll ask the questions when I speak to them next. I'm just down the road so could arrange to pick it up if that makes it easier. Cheers
  19. I may take you up on that, need to squeeze a couple of Colette games in before I break her out in polite company though, and finish painting her. I have forgotten everything I ever knew about Miss Du Bois but I can't shake the feeling that with some creative painting Union Miners could do double duty as Crooked Men. I need an intervention.
  20. What a cracking thread. Colette seduced me into this game in the first place, but I got frustrated with not being able to really bring the hammer down and moved on to Ressers. Running Colette showgirl lite never occurred to me, and I feel pretty foolish now. I am inspired to have a pretty massive rethink about my first Malifaux love. Thanks all !
  21. With schemes that movementy, I'd be hard pressed to leave the Necropunks in the box. I love these little fellas, and they just look so damn good alongside McMourning.
  22. Abandon Von Schill, a chap as dapper as Seamus shouldn't been seen on the streets of Malifaux with a sartorially challenged skullet wearer, even if he is handy in a scrap. No, the stylish psychopath about town ought to surround himself purely with the most exotic of birds ; Belles, Doxies and the beautiful Madame Sybelle. Of course, Molly Squidpidge is a fine filly to take for a canter, and a gaggle of Crooligans will round out the Victorian-gothic-foggy-streets-murderfest crew beautifully. Or Killjoy. Killjoy is always the answer. Thinking about it, Crooligans and Killjoy might be an amazing combination. Gonna have to think about this.....
  23. I use the Westwind box set too. Cracking sculpts, and at £22.50 for 10 of the little blighters, they're a decent price too. As mentioned, they are a shade smaller than Wyrd, but for stooped and shambling zombies I think they're fine. The more Victorian ones look ace swarming around Nicodem, nice gothic visual
  24. Sweet ! Thanks chaps. Do I have a bit more time to get some crew pics together then ?
  25. Paint faster. For years I sprayed everything black, and layered on base coats and highlights. Finishing anything was a chore and I got bored really quickly. Nothing ever looked finished. Nowadays, I spray everything white, and paint in a much looser, wetter and quicker way. It's a style not everyone likes, but to me it feels more.....artistic.....for want of a better word, and it certainly feels more creative and expressive than when I was painting in a much more rigid and structured way. I also now paint one bit of the miniature from start to finish, then move onto the next bit. I've just done an Alt Pandora for my wife, I did the coat from undercoat to final highlight, then the skin, then the box etc etc, whereas in the past I would do all the basecoats, then all the shading, then highlights. Changing it up a bit means that I see progression every time I do a section of the mini, and I look forward to seeing the next bit get done. I guess my advice would be to stick with it, it sounds like you and I are similar in how we approach many aspects of painting, but if it's a case of being in a rut don't be afraid to do something that is the total technical opposite of what you've been doing so far. It's a great excuse for a new crew if nothing else. Good luck !
