  1. Sounds great guys! I am picking up Zoraida Monday. Also, Rasputina. Played against her. Wtf? Help me?
  2. So, after dabbling in this game about three years ago and never gaining any real interest in it I have come back to 2E after seeing the new plastics and hearing nothing but good about it. I used to play Ressers but the model line and masters for Neverborn really drew me in. That doesn't mean I won't someday also play ressers again. So I started out by picking up the following to learn the game: Pandora box w/Teddy Lilith Box with additional nephlim box So I have a decent start. I played 2 games thus far with pandora and absolutely love her. Teddy is good but that rider model seems even more bonkers. My GF also likes NB so she shares my models right now. She gets to play Lilith while I play pandora. I thought at first when playing against black blood that the individual pings of damage was horrible for me. But then my next 50ss game I played against someone stacking armor. Next on my list of things to get is more masters. Though I want to become solid with the two I have I know that making lists per scenario is better off. So Zoraida is next for me. And probably Jacob Lynch. Eventually I will get all of the boxes. I sourced out a cheap collodi box at a store I shop at. But I am really reluctant to by metal as I am waiting for all the plastics. If I can find used metals for cheap I will buy/trade. And I will support my local gaming shop when i buy my plastics. Anyway, what do you guys recommend next for a purchase? Hooded rider? He seems very silly. Give you a back ground of my play style in most table tops: I play cryx and Circle, Vamp counts and Chaos. Usually like magic and melee. Love movement tricks and tricky tactics more so than straight forward. This is why I am loving Pandora right now so far. Thanks guys! Dan
  3. Great replies all around! I definitely see activations taking longer as you have generally more decisions to make and more actions to make per model than other games. So though I like all the models I think I am going to lean heavily towards Never Born or Resurectionists. Though I am still going to look at other factions as well these model lines draw me in the most and summoning and smashing has always been my play style. Thanks for the great input guys!
  4. Hey guys, Quick intro, I recently decided to try Malifaux out again. I used to dabble in Resurectionists back in the day but only have a few games under my belt with Nicodem. Over all what is the faction play style? Can we mix it up in combat? I play Cryx and Vampire counts and I was wondering if I am in the right place looking at yet another undead type faction. You can check out my other thread in the general section to get a better idea. Thanks, Dan
  5. Hey guys, I very briefly played Malifaux a few years back before 2E. I have heard a lot of good things about the new edition and the models are amazing. Problems I had before: The game seemed grindy and slow paced. The game seemed to take more than an hour and sometimes well over for only having a few models and it being a skirmish game. Some masters seemed unbalanced. Before we begin let me give you a short back ground of myself to give you an idea of my gaming experience. I have been table top gaming for about 17 years and am a very competitive person. I mainly play Warmachine/Hordes and that game will always be my main interest. I also have played 40k and Fantasy for many years. I run a lot of Warmachine/Hordes events in my area and attend many tournaments and cons all over the country. I am going to be getting a demo or three in the upcoming weeks to try this game out again. The models draw me in. I have recently played Relic Knights which also uses a card mechanic for its attacks and abilities and that game seems like a simpler version of this one. Whether that is a good or bad thing I suppose is subjective. I am usually drawn to undead or bad guys in games. I play Warriors of Chaos and Vampire counts in Fantasy and Cryx in Warmachine. But I do enjoy all model lines and do own several other armies and factions. With this game being so easy to get into I can see myself collection multiple factions over time if I enjoy the flow of the game and its mechanics. Of course I would always have a favorite faction and master. That is kinda what I am trying to find in the first try rather than discover he/she or it 3 months down the line. I started with Resurrectionists when I played before. I am not sure I got Nicodems play style back in the day and he seemed boring to me. Though his model is what pulled me into the faction. That and Kirai. Never born had a lot of creepy models that drew me in as well. But now that the entire line is being redone and the models are all amazing I find myself liking a bit of everything! So the question is, what do I start with? I enjoy Melee more than shooting! I do enjoy debuffing and casting. And I really like things that are strong in melee whether they started that way or were buffed or my opponent was debuffed to make it that way. I am open to most of the box sets and really like how most of them look. Any suggestions? Thanks for taking the time to read through that intro. Dan
  6. Ok so now I have had a demo game and a real make my own 25ss list game. My friend and I are new to this game but have been playing other games for over 16 years. Let me first start off by saying it was tough to pick a faction. I usually play undead in any game I play lol. So naturally I went for Resurrectionists. However I love Colette's box (is the pun intended)? and her play style. But over all I don't think I am super into arcanists. I also like neverborn over all as well. And the end of the day I went with my gut(s) (man I'm on fire), and went with resurrectionists. At first I was only going to get Nico's box because I was drawn to him but I decided to buy them all. Here is what I own so far to give you and idea: Nico box Seamus box McMourning box Karai Box Molly Box (yeah why not) 6 mindless zombies 4 canine remains 2 vultures 1 spirit totem (name escapes me atm) 1 zombie chihuahua 1 Bete Noir I am going to pick up some more spirits and such for Karia. 4 more senshi (or whatever they are called lol) and a few other things. But mainly I am working on trying to learn the game and combos. Hence finally the point of this post. I played my friend the other day. He had dreamer, and I had nico. I did pretty well and our game took forever because we were in the rule book more than moving models and that rule book is not very well written so it took some time to find things and such. I admit I am used to warmachine so I am not used to Malifaux lingo and way of writing rules. But it seems to me there are two classes of players in this game. Your gamers that figure out great combos and ways to use their models and the others that read the models rules for what they are with little to no consideration of thinking outside the box for combos and other such tactics. My problem is though I did a few cool things I felt very out classed by the dreamer. I was winning until turn 3. Can't believe we were fighting each other turn 1 because he is so damn fast. But eventually I ran out of steam and he does not give up any corpses so that really hurt. I guess what I am trying to get at here is I hear people in my gaming shop talk about all these crazy combos and things they thought of and it just seems like a different world to me. Like Colette and not being able to ever kill her. And Lady J doing 3 points of damage to all undead in 12". And there is even one master who I can't think of right now that makes and uses soul stones like they are going out of style. In warmachine you are suppose to kill kill kill. My problem may be that this is not the way this game is played and I am not suppose to be trying to just kill him. But the scenario we were playing was table quarters. I don't think there would have been anything left of me after turn 4. So I don't even understand how VP's would have even have come into play here. If we decided to do a movement based strategy he would have trounced me because of his insane movement. So here are a few questions I have after the game: 1) what is the general play style of this game? 2) I understand that you must choose your best master to fit the strategy but does this mean learning the game with one master and trying to master him is a bad idea. It seems Karia is the answer a lot of the times. 3) Do resurrectionists have all the same kinda crazy tricks that everyone else has and I just have to find them and learn them? 4) Is this going to be a game that even if I get good at it that when I see masters like the dreamer I shouldn't bother taking out my models? Or is it a fair fight and I just don't know how to deal with it yet? (granted both players are of equal playing skill). Thanks for any answers and insight you guys can give me. This game is the most different game I have ever played in my life. My brain is just not wrapping around it but I want it too so bad because I love the style of the game! If it helps here is my Nico list Nico (6SS cache) 1 spirit totem 1 4 canine remains 8 1 Bete Noir 9 1 Belle 4 And plenty of models to raise like PZ's and flesh golems ect ect.
  7. I can't think of any tournament I have been to in any game system that allows you to dabble with multiple factions. At first glance you would think it doesn't make a difference. You would think this gives you more options and everyone has the same advantage because everyone has the same model pool to choose from. That would be the pro behind being able to take anything. However the con is too severe to warrant this. The con being the golden rule. He who has the gold makes the rules. Translation- whoever owns more models has a huge advantage and it becomes unfair for those people who don't own multiple factions wether they can't afford to or simply don't want to are for those who are new at the game. The challenge in picking one faction is dealing with the strengths and weaknesses of your chosen faction and hopefully if the game is somewhat balanced as much as a game of numbers can be, the better player will prevail.
  8. I am too new to the game to have played or witnessed any tournaments but let me tell you two different experiences I have had with two different companies. Warhammer 40k and fantasy- players smashing their way up the latter and having one sided games and when you look across the table you literally see the opponent who is receiving the beating sighing, not having any fun, wishing he could just hive a kid a Lilly pop to roll his dice for him while he goes grabs lunch because he doesn't want to be there anymore. This is true of ALL of many tournaments I have been to. At that point is the winner actually even having fun? He is just gunning for the prize at that point. Warmachine hordes- the best players win. Barring the exception if you are new to the game, you will have good games most often and good match ups. If you are new or not as competitive you are put out of your misery very quickly whereas not to endure a long drawn out loss where there is nothing you can do. And you ALWAYS stand a chance of winning. I hope malifaux falls more into the second category. But I have no idea yet.

  10. How about if you each of those players couldn't take their "best" master? Then we would only have what has been defined here as bottom tier casters. And though I am new to the game and can only really compare it to how most other games work, you can't just rely on one caster/master to do everything for you. Certain masters have certain strengths and weaknesses. Even if the weaknesses are few and far apart. For example eAsphyxious in warmachine was considered the best caster and probably was best over all before his 2 cuddles. However he had trouble with certain things like high defense. As a matter of fact the tournament scene changed how their lists were made up just to account for his one weakness. So though Karia may be out "best" Master if whatever her weakness is is exploited then she would be shut down. So I guess what I am asking is their people who have listed the factions in order of strength around here? I hear a lot of talk about how Neverborn is the best. But I come from a game where though legion and cryx are considered to be the best it still comes down to who the better player is that wins the tournaments. Not the faction. I am just secretly hoping that this game works the same way and that all factions are competitive. I certainly don't want to get into a game that is unbalanced or that when you see a certain master on the other side of the board you are thinking I may as well just not even flip cards and go get lunch. I am sure from all the positive things I hear that this is probably not the case. I guess I just worry too much lol.
  11. I was about to copy and paste and answer all of the statements with yes or no when I realized that it is not possible because there are very different situations that entail different approaches. Here are a few: Showing a new player the game. Playing against a buddy that isn't as good at the game or doesn't play as much so is not as fluent with the game. Playing a hard core gamer that I know is at or above my skill lv and we always have great matches. Playing in a tournament for a big prize. Playing in a multiplayer or store run fun event. Playing against someone after a few beers. Playing against someone who is trying something out new. Playing in a league with all different sets of skill lvs. Playing in a local fun tournament with nothing to prove. Practicing for an upcoming tournament. So each one of the above scenarios, and I am sure there are more, dictate a completely different set of yes and no's to those 26 fields provided in the OP. So I guess I can't really answer those questions at all unless I answer them each for each topic I posted and that would take a long long time lol.
  12. Ok so seeing as I can't just go out and buy and paint everything seeing as my money and time is not unlimited...unfortunately. Here is what I settled on. Every Ressurectionist box (Seeing as I am playing them and they are my own personal use models but I am fine with people using my stuff in demos I would be running. So there ya go a whole bunch of one faction. Colette (her and her crew look too damn cool!) Lady J And that is it for now. But that gives me a lot of work to do painting and will keep me busy for some time. Also I am working on that table that I will hopefully take pics of and post in the painting section. Thanks for all your input guys!
  13. So by looking at this tier are you saying that if we take a group of players all with the same skill lv and give them each a different faction that Resurrectionists would be the worst faction?
  14. Lol @ feline remains. I like it. Also +1 for the undead poodle.
