Deployment, which way?

When and how do you determine which two of the four edges (or corners) are going be deployment zones?

 

Or to be concrete, if playing Standard Deployment, and you have a nicely oriented board with clear North, East, South, and West sides, when  do you choose if the game is played North-South or East-West?

 

The obvious times are when deployment type is generated and when a player chooses and deploys, but I can't see any evidence for either.

I think it will depend on the board, I know most of the ones I play with have an equal amount of hazardous terrain/cover/open area, so we can play either way.  You essentially want both sides to be equally balanced so no player has a direct advantage due to terrain.

 

I don't think, however, that it matters that much.

Honestly, I'm not sure we do. It usually happens that one orientation is more accessbile, or has room for cards, so that is the orientation we use.

 

If it did come up, I'd assume it would be during deployment; When one player picks their deployment zone, they set the orientation.

Yeah, technically, the player choosing deployment chooses any of the 4 table edges, and the opponent gets the opposite one. There isn't a separate step for choosing N-S or E-W.  

 

In practice, many tables aren't set up for this and so you'll only have two options.

Who ever deploys first gets their corner/side that is why you make the table ad even as possible no matter what side gets picked for whom.

It's determined by the person who chooses deployment.
