Placing a model v. Summoning a model

I was playing Jakob Lynch against a Hamelin crew today and while attempting to get the Hungering Darkness out from out of play, something odd came up.

Hamelin's Voracious Rats reads that he Summons a Malifaux Rat, and that no other model can be Summoned as a result of the trigger, BUT, Jakob Lynch says to Place the Hungering Darkness, not Summon it, when Slave to Darkness goes off.

What happens here? I am sure I'm in the right and that HD can be brought into play, but my foe says otherwise (although he says he can see where I am coming from due to wording discrepancy).

Summon and place are different effects, so I'd say that placing the HD is permitted.

Hamelin does nothing to stop Placed.
