edonil
Yeah, really loved those kits. Have tweezers on hand for Chiaki and Yan Lo, though...
SteamHammer
I wish I had a less stringy plastic glue. I'm going to have to clean the models again once they're fully dry as there are strands everywhere.
edonil
Ew. That's no fun. So, what else did you get up to?
SteamHammer
Ate too much, drank too much, did zero exercise. Almost finished Far Cry 3. Read the first book in the Chronicles of the Black Company. Over half way through the last Ice and Fire book. Watched plenty of DVDs. And slowly continuing my swamp scenery. Just trying to work out how to stop the tiles from curling up due to the PVA. I now have 2 trees on the go. It's slow work because it's kind of boring. But I'll get there in the end. What did you get up to over the holidays?
edonil
How was the Black Company book? I almost picked it up one day, it looked interesting. I did a lot of Skyrim. A lot, lol. Also rearranged hobby space, started a game board, and finally got the muse to show up again...if a little more sporadically than I'd like. Working on a scene right now. SteamHammer
Sort of like the Erikson Malazan books in that it takes a while to get into as nothing is really explained. But it's good, I've started on the next one already. It was just a Christmas present I'd added to the list. I've also got 9 Kris Longknife books waiting, plus a pile of Kindle ones I picked up in the sale. So many things I want to read and so little time. edonil
Ah, Kris Longknife...those are always fun. I need to start getting my own copies at some point in time. What's in the Kindle list?
SteamHammer
I picked up The Desert Spear and The Painted Man by Peter Brett, Soulless: The Parasol Protectorate book1 by Gail Carriger and some other books I've read before that I either borrowed off someone (like The Empire of Black and Gold) or have a really old copy that's falling to bits (like The Magician). At 99p I can be generous with my spending. ---------- Post added at 09:49 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:48 AM ---------- Plus there's still things on it at the moment that I haven't read yet. edonil
Heh, should be good for a while, eh?
SteamHammer
I need a holiday. I know the books don't go off so I don't need to read them quickly but it's like the Paintathon. I hate having such a backlog. Plus I really want to read them.
edonil
I wish I had a backlog like that...I'm not expecting another book until March, when the next Honor Harrington book is out.
SteamHammer
Don't remind me of books I still need to buy. I guess I could be patient and wait until a birthday or next Christmas for things like that and the Safehold ones. But you know what my willpower is like from Kickstarter campaigns. edonil
Heh, you're so far behind on the Honor Harrington set, what's one more?
SteamHammer
That just makes it worse, means I've 3 or 4 to get. Plus the new YA one will be out (or is out already). Then there's that Galaxy Unknown set I want to read more of.
edonil
Um. I don't know when the sequel to Fire Season will be out...not for a bit, I don't think.
SteamHammer
I meant the sequel to A Beautiful Friendship. Too early to even think about the next one.
edonil
oh. Well...Fire Season is the sequel to A Beautiful Friendship...
SteamHammer
Plus there's the Protector of the Small series. And considering I need to start painting again, plus do some exercise, then I've no idea when I'll find time for all this reading.
edonil
No idea...good luck! lol ---------- Post added at 05:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:20 AM ---------- I have discovered that it's hard to figure out the details of a magic system on the fly... :-P
SteamHammer
I can imagine. Start with how powerful it should be and work back from that.

edonil
Looking forward to it, Chocobo! Yeah, that's kinda how I'm looking at it...I've got the broad picture of what's going on figured out. I'm just now trying to find that middle ground of explaining enough to give the concept, but not so much that I'm locked into something that's not the right idea. I've had the what of my magic system figured out for a while, now I'm onto the how. Well, we'll see if this works, lol.
SteamHammer
Explain it to the reader via a novice in the art. That way if there are mistakes then it was due to the character's poor understanding.
