edonil
Yeah, I've been wondering about that myself. And hey, UberGruber, welcome to the OTT. ---------- Post added at 04:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:39 AM ---------- So, what've you been up to? Anything new in life? SteamHammer
My Dad is still here visiting so I'm getting a lot of reading done. But he should be leaving at the start of next week. The end is in sight. *happy* Finished the last of The Wire last night and Disciples 3 on the computer but other than that my spare time is in the garden. edonil
What're you reading?
SteamHammer
Still going through the Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson (it's my bath book so takes a while). Book 1 of some Mistwraith series by Janny Wurts. I'm not gripped yet but people say it gets better. And Theft of Swords by Michael J Sullivan which is great fun. Since my Dad arrived I've also finished the first 3 of the Warrior of Rome books by Harry Sidebottom, A Beautiful Friendship by David Weber and A Touch of Power by Maria Snyder. So while his visits are terrible for gaming or exercise, I do catch up on my reading.
edonil
What'd you think of A Beautiful Friendship?
SteamHammer
I really liked it. YA or not is it a very entertaining read.
edonil
I enjoyed it as well. I'm looking forward to Fire Season coming out this fall. Should be interesting to see where he's taking the story of Stephanie and Lionheart. Have you ever gotten the chance to read any of the short story collections? The novel itself is based on one of the first stories, but he references another one with Fisher and his human, The Stray.
SteamHammer
No, I keep meaning to but I'll probably catch up on the main HH series first. And the latest Safehold one.
edonil
Ah, better catch up on Safehold first, Midst Toil and Tribulation is this year too, lol.
SteamHammer
At least he is churning them out. I wonder what Sanderson is up to. He used to be prolific.
edonil
If you're asking about the author I think you are, he got dragged into finishing the Wheel of Time. Which he did an excellent job with, I just wish they'd finish the last book, let me read it and allow me to move on with my life. I've been reading that series since I was in 6th grade... SteamHammer
Looks like that has a release date of next January. Hopefully once he's done that he can continue with the Stormlight books.
edonil
The other major book release I'm awaiting is the next Brent Week book, the sequel to The Black Prism. Great story, want to know what happens next...
SteamHammer
I haven't read that. Must keep an eye out for it in sales.
edonil
did you read the Night Angel series he wrote?
SteamHammer
Nope. His name rings a bell so either I keep overlooking his books or I've been recommended them in the past but I've never read anything by him.
edonil
Gotcha. Good stuff, especially for a fairly new author. The Night Angel trilogy was his first published works. Dark, but still good.
SteamHammer
Is it worth reading that first or is there no connection between the series?
edonil
No connection whatsoever. New setting, new rules of magic, completely different except for the fact that it's dark fantasy. ---------- Post added at 05:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:28 AM ---------- The Lightbringer series (Black Prism) has a really cool system of magic involving color that was really pretty innovative. At the very least, I haven't heard it before. And no, it doesn't follow the Magic: The Gathering color system.
SteamHammer
I'll definitely give it a go although I can see my reading dropping sharply after this week.

edonil
Would've been awesome if we had. If any thread was going to break the forum, it'd be this one.
SteamHammer
Keep trying. While the glory days with lots of active people here have passed, we still get a good post count each month.
edonil
Heh, yeah, I'm definitely intending to try. Can you imagine the name of the sequel thread? "Off Topic Playground 2- The Breaking of the Forum"
