Hollow One
Hello, everyone. Recently my local game store started hosting Malifaux games. I had a chance to watch and I have to say that I really like it. I like it so much in fact that I've decided to scrap my 40k stuff and just go with Malifaux. It looks cool, the rules are neat, and it isn't insanely expensive to start playing. Now, I'm not really sure what I want to start with, exactly. I know I want to play Outcasts, but I'm just not sure which kind. Is there anyone who can tell me how each of the Outcast groups work? What are they good at, what are they bad at, etcetera, etcetera. Any help would be really appreciated! Thanks!

TheOneWhoFell
Outcasts run the scale. Most have pretty good melee/ranged abilities. some are finger wigglers. Fluff wise Outcasts are good at many things, but they don't fit in (hence the name). Did you have thoughts or questions about a particular crew? Hollow One
Yeah, currently I'm pretty torn between getting Von Schill and his crew or getting the Viktorias and some Ronin.
TheOneWhoFell
Yeah, currently I'm pretty torn between getting Von Schill and his crew or getting the Viktorias and some Ronin. Both very effective. I don't usually play Outcast, but I play AGAINST several. Here is what I've seen of those two armys: Von Schill is useful in almost every situation except, maybe, against the guild. He has range and Melee with some mad buffs from the librarian. He has a sniper (the trapper) and the entire crew is trouble for any spell casters or undead. The Viktorias are a deadly duo. They are a fast crew, designed to move across the board quickly and engage with an opposing crew ASAP. They are particualrly useful against the guild, who tend to like things a ways out (except, of course Lady Justice). Put Hans or the Trapper in that crew for cover, and they are particularly effective. Two of the models in this box set have magic weapons (especially useful against spirits). Hope that helps some
Hollow One
What about the Ronin mercenaries? Sadly I don't really know the rules that well, so I've been basing my choices on how cool the models look.
nightgaunt98c
A Viktoria crew is all about close combat. The ronin are pretty much a neccesity, and they really make the starter box click. VonSchill is better at range, and they all have nifty armor. So really it comes down to which style works best for you.
Mr. Bigglesworth
Ronins have the most synergy with the Viks. As for first crew both work great and both box sets can play well mixed with each other.
TheOneWhoFell
The Ronin are neat because they allow you to summon a Vik if one of them dies (I don't remember the exact rule, but it's pretty good). I can't really say anything else positive about the Ronin. From fighting AGAINST them, I've seen that they don't really hit very hard, and they aren't as fast as the rest of the crew. Harmless is pretty cool, but when they're up against the guild (all of whom have high willpower) it's not very effective. They also seem to die pretty easily. They are one of the models you should talk to a Viki's player about. In the Malifaux Matters section of the Forum, they break discussion down by faction. Those folks might be able to help you more with the Ronin... :\

Sadly I don't really know the rules that well, so I've been basing my choices on how cool the models look. There is nothing wrong with picking things that way. Unlike in 40k there are very few stinkers, so you should still do well with whatever you like.
WUWU
The Freikorpsman box set is actually pretty effective run by the Viks.
Dark Alleycat
Ok I play Von schill primarily, but have used the vik's and ronin. Von schill's people play like a small military squad. When you play them, you can keep them close together, unlike most other armies. Thats where they do the best. The specialist generates alot of panic on your opponent in almost every situation. it generates blast waves,it explodes when he finally does die,and anything wtih a willpower under 7(most models) will have a negative flip when attacking him in close combat,so wont do that well. The librarian can heal 3 times in a turn with a fairly easy cast, and gives you another card for your hand each turn. so she can keep your team up and running. Now...the only problem that von schill's crew has,is the fact that he doesn't have any magic weapons, and that his troops have a low minimum damage. These things combine to give him problems with spirits and he doesn't have a great melee combatant though all of his guys are good at it. You add Taelor to his crew, and you are set on both. Viktorias are insanely mobile, and can bounce around the whole map very easy. the ronin are mobile...not as mobile as the vik's but still good. they are decent for the points, and they can be harmless...which can slow down low willpower models. You would probably want to add in a convict gunslinger or hans/freikorp trapper to give your team some ranged damage dealing however.
