That only matters if you are taking a walk action, as no other form of movement is prevented from leaving engagement. Charge doesn't have a target, you can move where you like. You don't have to end a charge close to an enemy, you just don't get to make an attack if there isn't someone close enough at the end of the move. EDIT One thing to add - Stampede only applies if you are doing a charge action. You are allowed to charge through engagement ranges and out the other side again if you have sufficient movement to do so.
