Charge through engagement range

GueFiola

Question

Hello everybody.
On p. 44 CRB indicated that engaged models may not charge.
What happens, when unengaged model declares charge, and the charge line passes through engagement range of the non-target enemy model?
1) Attacker can not declare charge;
2) It declares charge, but when entering the non-target model's ER, he stops and charge is failed;
3) It enters and leaves the ER unrestricted;
4) It enters into ER unrestricted, but when leaving the area, the third model performs the disengaging strike.

The correct outcome is #3

You may not declare a charge while engaged (i.e. if you are engaged before resolving any effects), but once you have "cleared" this check, the charge resolves fully and you can move through as many engagement ranges as required. Charges also never provoke disengaging strikes because only walk actions provoke disengaging strikes.

Even with walks, disengaging strikes don't work as in #4. They can only be taken when a model declares a walk action (again, before resolving any effects), so a model can freely move through enemy engagement ranges as long as it only takes them a single walk action.

Also do note that any situation like #2 does not happen in Malifaux because there is not a "do as much as you can" rule. For example, if your charge fell short and you were not in range to make the attacks generated, the entire charge would fail and the model could not have moved in the first place.
