total number of suits question

Caveat: I am very new to malifaux, but wanted to make sure I understand something. Some abilities state that they give additional benefits based on the number of suits in the "final duel total". This suggests to me that they mean after both sides are happy with their flip and you have to final numbers during resolution you total up how many of.l that suit their are on your card, your opponents card, and any "baked in" suits native to the ability. This would mean a maximum of four suits if fo some reason both the offensive and defensive abilities had native suits AND both final flips were the same suit. Is this correct?

Each player only count their own cards. There are also ways to get lots of suits, but they are kind of involved. The important part is that there is no limit in the rules on how many suits you can have in a dual total. E.g. If Ramos want to summon 3 spiders he needs to reach the TN 19 :tome  :tome  :tome, he does this by having one  :tome in his Ca, flipping or cheating a  :tome card and spending a SS for the final  :tome .

A question that comes up often.

 

Both you and your opponent have a different final duel total. When you have flipped and cheated fate (or not) then you calculate your final duel total. This is the total of the flipped card plus your stat. This includes the numeric value and any suits.

 

Example

  • An Executioner is attacking an unfortunate Gremlin.
  • The Executioner flips a 11 :ram . The opposing gremlin flips a 3 :crow
  • The Gremlin decides to cheat in a 7 :mask.
  • The final duel total of the Executioner is Ml 6 :ram + 11 :ram for a total of 17 :ram :ram
  • The final duel total of the Gremlin is Df 5 + 7 :mask for a total of 12 :mask
  • The executioner declares his "Critical Strike" trigger, which gives him +1 damage for each :ram in his final duel total, for a total of +2 damage. (2 :rams )
  • Executioner flips low for damage, dealing 3 + 2 = 5 damage. (from his trigger)
  • The Gremlin dies horribly
