Thank you all for the comments, I haven't tried much OSL before so it was a good chance to learn.
My job is to work with lights for theatre shows so I do understand the properties of light and how it behaves on different surfaces, but it's still hard to create this with paint.
I'm glad you think I have been somewhat successful.
I actually used a small torch to simulate the lantern light on the primed model to get an idea of where the shadows would fall and the best way to position the mini in the scene.

Yes @Vega, the shadow depicts the bandersnatch but I wanted it to feel like it was growing out of the shadows created by the miner's lantern so his own shadow was covered and absorbed by the bandersnatch's. I hope that helps explain it?
