  1. Thanks! I'm pretty proud of myself , espacially Shang's base, with the paint, it looks better than I could wish. @Mooseyfaux : Thank you You know, hardware stores are a real goldmine of stuff to use at a very low price. A 4x8 sheet of high density styrofoam can really do magic once it goes under the blade!
  2. Not bad looking if I may say so. Although, at first glance, I wondered why Misaki was suddenly at the bottom of the sea :Hiding_Puppet: Maybe due to the mix of colors and the choice of vegetals on the base. Nice painting though !
  3. Your Shang looks amazing, can't imagine IRL, must be stunning. Seeing them in picture is one thing, but when you start painting, you just realise the talent many of you have. Good job, I'll keep an eye on your posts.
  4. I second morpsele and Rhonlore here, Meeplemart being a good choice. I also ordered from TheWarStore.com, which is not canadian, but the service was also very good and the prices on par (on average) with Meeplemart. My suggestion : visit a few select ones.
  5. @0777218 : Celle-là, c'est du styro-mousse haute densité passé au bistouri, puis sablé grossièrement. Après, un fond noir, du dry brush, et voilà ! Merci pour le compliment @Big Ned : Thanks ! I certainly do find it more than suitable for play, which is the ultimate goal. Anyway, Shang is, technically, not mine, since my wife chose Misaki's crew between two boxes, leaving me with Mei Feng. So I began with one of hers, now I'll try my Emberling
  6. Got myself to start and ultimately finish Shang tonight. Was pretty satisfied with what I saw with my human eyes. Then I took a picture to show you guys and DAMN does that close up show every single brush stroke you've made. Youch. Whatever, I know (hope ?) it'll get better, and I'm having a lot of fun learning
  7. Laval, just north of Montréal (yup, with an accent), province of Québec (yup, here comes the accent again). Still new with Malifaux and Puppet Wars... and miniatures at all... so no FLGS. YET. I hear there's a certain Gamer's Vault in Montréal that plays and sells Malifaux stuff. I will have to go down there and have a look.
  8. Impressive, really. Bought Unstitched myself and I started assembling them this week, about 1/3 done. They really have character, and the painting you made just amplifies that. Quick question from a newbie who just started painting : There are some puppets (and this is the case for other miniatures too) with recesses created by the features of the miniature. Seamus, for example, has a saw real close to the back of his head. In this very small gap, what/how do you paint ? Do you simply take for granted that you won't look there anyway and leave it in a monochrome, dark shade (grey or black) ? Or do you have a super special power unknown to ordinary people ? Just wondering
  9. Thanks to all of you for encouraging a newbie @nagash13 : I took your advice (as well as crohn's) and didn't touch the wood. I still have a few bottles of stain at home, it'll look far greater than any "effect" I could try. @crohn : Good tip about thinning the paint more. I started doing just that in the end, and using a wet palette helps tremendously. Still, I tend to thin slightly too much. I guess there's a reason we call painting "art"
  10. Thanks guys ! I have to say I'm having a blast with them, and seeing so many great painters here on the forum is just more inspiring. @Wings @dgraz : For the bases, I must confess I worked with wood in another life, designing and building furniture. I had some cedar left overs in the garage, so it was the easiest way for the Torakage, along with oak veneer to cover the bases. As much as I'd want to replicate wood, there's nothing more real than the real thing. I'll finish priming the last ones tonight and start working on the Torakage (already primed). I made the mistake to begin with their weapon, but I was too eager to see what I could do with some armor wash. By the way, any tip on painting Ototo ? Primed him yesterday, but f**k is this one a b**ch to paint ?!?! Sorry for the language, but I'm starting to think I should have painted him BEFORE gluing the parts together. Suggestions ? EDIT : Since I'm asking questions, here's another one for the painters. Even though I used actual wood, do you think I should paint it anyway ? Will the look be more homogeneous with paint or does it not matter at all ?
  11. Hi, I just introduced myslef in the Introduction forum, and now it is time to show my potential (as in "keep faith, talent MAY come to you some day..."). Now, I never painted miniatures before (never even played with them, barely knew they existed in fact), so keep in mind that this is my very first attempt. I went with a test miniature first to get the feel of painting at this scale (well, painting at all actually), the name is Keveun (or Kevuhn, for you english speaking folks), aka Tox from Reaper. The colors are over the top, the lighting and shadows frankly not to my taste and the face is more muddy than expected, but at least I could try washes, inks, armor wash, face wash, dry brushing, light and shadow effects, etc. It didn't help that I changed my mind quite a few times as I added layers of paint. Now, the Malifaux crews are based. Here's a preview (only the Misaki crew), I'll keep you posted as it progresses. There it is. If only for the assembling/basing/painting part, the buy was worth it. I already have Metal Gamins on the way, along with a box of weird puppets...
  12. Hi guys! Late comer from Laval, just north of Montreal. For those of you who don't know what Laval is like, it's an island, just as Montreal is, but covered with 3 things : shopping centers (the "classic" ones as much as the "smart" variety), houses around those shopping centres, and blanks. Yeah, cool city. The only good reason to live in Laval is because it's close to Montreal but houses are cheaper. For those of you who don't know Montreal, it is the first city in North America to have, it is my belief, a School for Corruption and Other Public Misbehaviors. If you haven't heard, you're missing quite a show. I'm new here on the forum AND to Malifaux. I'm 33, happily married, happy father, quite happy as a business management counselor and a real fan of gaming (video games, boardgames). Yet, instead of just watching TV at night, I wanted something fun to do with my hands (not like... I mean... come on, you get it, I meant something manual... no, not that I... geez). So after looking for a while on the internet (ok, that's it, have a laugh then move on please... I was looking for papercraft projects !), I found a cool little company selling PDF files with terrain setups that you could print, cut and glue together. Bought one, started the castle, then got curious about those little figures in their promo images, made by a company called "Wyrd". BAM ! Suddenly, a whole new world just opened up, where miniatures were kings and where time suddenly contracted as to appear non existent. I explored many (MANY) miniatures games (bought the Havoc rulebook that I'm keeping for later), and decided to get back to the first one I saw, Malifaux, for the smaller scale and the weird theme. Got myself two crew boxes (Mei Feng for myself and Misaki for the wife who also happen to like games), as well as the 1.5 rulebook (well, not the best move this one, as the M2E came out weeks after, but i didn't know) and, while waiting for them to arrive, a friend of a friend came home one night and saw the half-finished castle and it got us talking. BAM again ! That guy, I learned, was a huge Warhamburger (you know what I mean) gamer in the years past, having 100's of miniatures and won tournaments. And he's a pretty good painter. So now, he's also MY friend, and he and the other friend both ordered their own crews (Herald of obliteration for one, Lady J for the other). We are now in the process of painting them. I'll post some pics in the appropriate section, along with my first ever painted miniature (I decided to get the feel of the thing on a cheaper one first). So there it is, I've started learning how to assemble, base and paint miniatures, then we'll have a go at the game itself. I haven't read every thread in the forum, so if there's someone closeby who's eventually interested in gaming with us, that would be fun
