  1. Welcome! We also have a new Malifaux group starting up in Spartanburg SC. Just a jump across the state line!
  2. At first I wasn't to sure about the scales sculpt. Now ... I am thinking it fits in with the "inspire fear" theme of the Guild.
  3. Hello everyone! I have a good friend who is playing Outcasts. I have done some painting for him and thought I would post them in a thread seperat from my Guild minis. If I can get pics of the Somer Teeth crew I did for him, I will add them in here also as well any future Outcasts I do. I had a much harder time getting clear pics of these guys. The intent of the bases was to make it look like the one pig was cooling in the mud while the others were running and jumping through the Bayou. The mosquito base was painted to look like the bug was moving or hovering over the swamp water. Next up is the Hog Wisperer and another piglet!
  4. Hello again everyone! Well, here are some more detailed pics of my town. Some interior shots as well as a shot of the way I made my roofs. First the roof shot. If you look at the very top roof strip you will get a good idea of how they were all cut. Next my jail cell. I decided to go for ease of game play so it does not open. You fit the mini in from the top. Now the bank. I went with a corner safe and a flip up counter. The Saloon! Lots of area to fight. A long wide bar and a stage. I hope these pics well inspire or help you all as you build your own towns!
  5. Thanks again for all the comments! The hair had to be just right as it is the bulk of the sculpt. I had a lot of real life referance with how the hair should look. My wife has VERY long and thick hair. It also just so happens to have shades of red in it. I kept asking her if the color was right! I knew I had it when she approved! :top: Yes, the building are scratch built. I posted more pics and a short write up in the "Mattimao's Terrain" thread. Next up will be pics of some Outcasts I did for a friend.
  6. An additional note: Any time you use whiteboard or foam of any type- Prime it before you spraypaint. I did not have very much showing by the time I had all the wood on the buildings. Watch for the edges of your roofs, overhangs, walls etc. Get a variety of sizes of rubber bands. You will find them very useful to secure individual boards while the glue dries. They are also great for holding the signs on the buildings while they dry.
  7. Thanks again for all the nice comments. There are a few things I will try to get pics of. The interior of the Sheriff building has a cell. The Bank has a hinged counter top and a safe. ( to steal loot ) The saloon also has a bar and a stage. If you want a great how-to for this type of city,go to the blog "The Lower Crypt". This blog is run by Maniple, one of the members here. He did a very good write up with pictures and all. I changed a few things as compared to what he did. My Hotel took the most work. I made the top level removable for game play reasons and put two rooms upstairs. I added a balcony and hallway upstairs so we could have some good old fashioned shootouts! All of my doors measure at 2" and my windows varied based on the building. I purposely set some of the window frames where they were not at right angles so that the buildings would look older. Yes, the stairs as I made them took a lot of work. BUT, it is will worth it! I spaced the stairs so that a mini could get the edge of their base under each step and stay in place. Once again , I am going for the shoot-outs! My Saloon and Hotel do not have roofs. This was done for ease of game play with them being more likely to have several minis in them at once. The other buildings all have removable roofs. I will put up pics of how I did this later. In a nutshell... I cut strips of oatmeal boxes that were a few inches longer than my peaked roofs. I then cut a notch at semi regular intervals along each strip. It took 17 of these strips per side! Starting at the bottom of the roof and using white glue ( spread it with your finger ) attach the strips. Make sure the bottom strip overhangs the white board a little bit. Using the notches as a guide, place strip after strip always placing your notches were ever you want. You should have extra overhanging the edges of the roof. Make sure to spread glue over the previous strip as well as the white board for each new strip. IMPORTANT! Only do one side at a time. This is so you can place the freshly glued side face down on a hard surface and put weight on the roof. You may want to use wax paper. This must be done so it drys properly. DO NOT cut the excess off until the roof is totally dry! Oh yeah, I used oatmeal boxes because they were thinner cardboard than cereal boxes. For painting get ahold of some "sponge" brushes. They make it very easy to get thinned black paint into all the cracks between the boards! My order of painting. 1.Black spray "primer". 2 cans at .96 cents each 2.Thinned black paint. .69 cents - Sponge brush then use a regular brush to get any spots the other missed. 3.A "dark" light blue color. Drybrush with a 2" painters brush. These are under a dollar but you will find it a great brush! 4.Carmel color was drybrushed on using the 2" brush. A note on the drybrushing. I went for spooky. However you want your town to look, keep it in mind as you paint. Now go to "The Lower Crypt" , read up and get cracking! Remember that it is your town. Make it how you see fit!
  8. Thanks for the kind words! A hint to anyone looking to build a western town- I used a lot of bamboo. If you check wal-mart they should have a section of outside picnic themed place settings. Among all the bright colors you can find bamboo place mats. The ones I bought were $1 each and were a orange and yellow pattern. The "sticks" the mats are made of are about the same width as popsicle sticks. Buy the mat, cut the strings holding it together and you have a lot of wood! It cuts very easy with an old pair of scissors. I also used popsicle sticks, balsa, and white board. The pillars came from Hobby Lobby. If you want to know how I did any particular thing, just ask!:itsme:
  9. This is the beginning of my Guild crew. Comments are welcome! My Crew! I had a great time painting these! I am looking forward to getting more guild members for my crew!
  10. Hey everyone! Well, my first western town is done! Well done enough for now. I can always modify or add more detail later. I made 6 buildings. Saloon Bank Sheriff Hotel x2 Generic buildings When it came to painting them, I really wanted to capture the eerie feel of Malifaux. I settled on a dark paint palate. The buildings were primed black and them brushed a "darker" black. The buildings were then dry brushed in a very particular matter to give them an aged feel. I used a light blue followed by a carmel color. The signs were made by running a cut of grocery bag through a color printer and then affixing the paper to cardboard and framing with balsa. I then painted the wood and applied several washes. Now... What is an easy way to post my pics? I do have GIMP 2, but I am still not really familiar with how to use it. Any suggestions would be great!
  11. Thanks again for the inspiration! My western Town is moving right along. I did make the Hotel with a removable second story, balcony, and overhang. I added a stairway going up the back of the building. So far I have build a bank, sheriff, two misc. buildings and the Hotel. Now I need to make my Welcome to Malifaux sign! My paint scheme is very different. I will post pics when I am done in another thread.:coolpics:
  12. I am in the middle of building a western town. We already have plenty of fantasy/sci-fi stuff. Figured I would try Victorian next. We are still just learning to play , so we are using very little terrain so we can focus on the rules more. Once the rules are down better... watch out! :ahhhhh:
  13. Very nice. I love how the ruins look like they were once a grand port of some kind. Kind of a pre-breach people, but who were they?:hmmmm:
  14. Thanks for all the tips. I played my first game and...had a blast! I made lots of mistakes and didn't use abilites that would have helped had I used them. The game ended on turn 5 with the other crew being wiped out. I held Justice back until about turn 4 and then moved in for the kills. All I can say is...WOW! Thank you to my friend John for a very good game. I now really fear the "robot spiders"!
  15. Maniple- Your stuff is great! You have inspired me to make a western town! I had a question about your hotel. Is it a two piece or one piece building?
  16. Wow! Thank you guys for the tips. I just finished painting my Guild crew this weekend and I have my first game soon. I was looking at using a Totem with Lady Justice already, and I think I will just learn to use the Scales and the Governor's Proxy. :guns: Other than Totems; if I was to add to the crew what would be some of the best choices? I would prefer to stay Guild, but I am not ruling out using mercenaries.
  17. Thanks PIT. I guess it's kind of like the old weaken them with range and then send in the pain! Now to figure out how best to use Lady Justice's spells. :viking:
  18. Hello Everyone. My name is Mattimao. I posted a brief write up in the Introduction forum. I am new to the game and have the Lady Justice crew. I went with the anti-death crew primarily for the cool anti zombie theme. I also tend to be an in the front lines type of player. Melee makes me happy! I welcome any pointers on how to use this crew to it's full potential. I have been reading the other posts and have gathered some strategy. If anyone could give me a basic strategy for just the Lady Justice starter crew, that would help. I do have the rule book and should be playing my first game soon.
  19. Thought I would introduce myself. My name is Matt,or as I am known in the gaming world... Mattimao. I have been a gamer for many years and am looking forward to becoming part of the Malifaux community. My gaming past goes back to the second edition of Battletech and the West End Games Star Wars Skirmish game. Years past... I discover CCGs. Toy around with them for a while...I miss miniature gaming... Mage Knight arrives... Mechwarrior... LOTR... Then Wizkids falls. No more pirates sailing the tabletop or Dragons fighting Goblins. No more thundering explosions as Mechs collide. All is quiet. Played some more CCGs.- But I still missed my miniature games. Then along game a little game called Clout Fantasy. WOW! You talk about a fun game! I played until the game could no longer survive. ( Blasted economy ) If you have not ever played Clout you must try it. BUT- I still missed my miniature games. The whole time I was gaming I was also painting. You see I started painting before Mechs even walked into the corner book store. I would get 1\72 scale military figs and paint up my own armies. Because of my painting I also kept up with the new on line paint communities. I found WYRD and would visit just to read the forums and watch the contests. Then I read about the coming of a game by Wyrd. Sounds cool. Fast forward to today. Malifaux is here and I have Lady Justice and her crew almost completely done. My understanding of the rules is getting there. I have friends with their crews almost ready. Yeah, This is going to be fun.
