  1. here i have to disagree. i don't think there is such a thing as a bad list de facto. i think the game is balanced well enough that no matter who you throw together they are good at something. if someone says "i tried and it was terrible" that i think that is actually a disservice to you as they might've not implemented it well, tried it for the wrong thing, etc. planning ahead really only consists of reading the models' abilities and learning what their strengths and weaknesses are so that you can call on them at the right time. if someone doesn't want to play until he's painted stuff then he won't play until he's painted stuff, or he might play with what he has painted or whatever. i don't know, its wholly personal preference. again i'm not talking about a post asking for general advice about what a model is capable of either. even hans is useful i think. he can add something pretty vital for some crews that may lack it entirely. just because nino does it better, doesn't make it unbalanced or make him a terrible model either. :tj: anyways the thread is about balance and my point is that i think its balanced because of rock/paper/scissors and not in spite of it.
  2. that's the way i would play it but it hasn't ever come up for me that the damage i inflicted was different then the damage the target actually received, so i don't know
  3. the problem i have with firestorm is when you take the simple mechanics of uncharted, remove LOS entirely, and fire in all directions as much as you want, there really isn't anything to do other than roll dice. its a shame because spaceships are cool, in general. uncharted is more fun because it focuses a little more on actually positioning things well, but does get a little same-y after awhile too. however since you can premeasure most mistakes will come from either a) not premeasuring, or having never played a game before, or maybe c) not thinking about the fact that there is a turn after the current one, so even if you premeasure to that one spot you don't anticipate further movement also not the best looking models for either really. also also: jessie your signature is amazing
  4. no its not threads on how to deal with specific masters with other specific masters that i find funny. those are definitely helpful for strategic reasons. the threads i find funny are all of the ones asking for people to comment on a specific list. "My 30 ss XXXX crew list" "Is this a good list? what do you guys think?" well, what is your strategy? who are you playing against? what does the terrain look like? you get to know all of these things before you play so coming up with something that is predetermined is kind of silly. even if you don't own a lot of models and only one master, the difference between a starter box and a starter box minus one dude for more soulstones is actually pretty big, and both can be better than the other in different situations. and like i said the reason i think people are prone to doing that at first is because if they come from say, warhammer, that is what they have to do.
  5. true when i think bayou i think 100% swampy stuff, either way its definitely killer 15 minutes is not nearly as bad as i thought. i figured it would take hours to dry at least. i think i'm going to have to pick some up. what kind of texture for the trees? also is the ladder in the pipe room part of one of the molds too?
  6. this is really awesome. i'm thinking about picking up some hirst arts stuff myself. seems like you've been working pretty quickly on this, how long does it take to cast everything? or do you just have several molds? also, how did you do the trees/where did you get them?
  7. i think there is a lot of rock/paper/scissors involved but its also by design as you choose who you are going to use AFTER you know what you are trying to do. so where other games have rock/paper/scissors and try to ignore that and deny it, creating competitive environments where you are only allowed to bring one group of guys and therefore must try your best to make an "all-comers" list. malifaux explicitly doesn't do that. you basically both throw rock and then play it out from there. thats why i think its funny in the different faction forums people posting lists and asking for advice because your crew's effectiveness is wholly dependent on what you are trying to do and who you are facing. they are still used to how things work with other game systems i guess.
  8. I usually go with 3. That way I don't have to hold a high crow all game hoping to summon one and can use it for more useful things (there are never enough high crows). Also Lure x6 means your enemy will be wherever you want them to be. You can also do the send-one-belle-out-as-a-trap-and-then-use-call-belle-to-teleport-her-away trick and maybe leave some of your enemies models out of the fight for awhile when they rush up hoping to gank a lone belle.
  9. the convict gunslinger is pretty universally considered as awesome and hans is considered too expensive, though i have used neither. I'm thinking about giving hans a whirl for his adaptability and the hookers can pull targets out for him to snipe, but I usually stick to stuff in faction. the crooked men that just came out seem like they will be a good fit with seamus' crew as they have some ranged damage as well as the combo of shaft counters + lure. i'm a pretty big fan of bete noire and she adds a little range as well though she is almost always better in melee. those are all good additions, but honestly i would go ahead and get whatever you can afford/feel like buying because its all useful in one situation or another. the major thing about malifaux that is different for people coming over from other games is that you make your list after you know your opponent and what you are trying to do, so the more options the better.
  10. copy cat killer is cool, but its a tough choice between the grave spirit honestly. i don't always field him bete noire is pretty essential to get some damage output. i like sebastian too for that reason and he can summon something other than a belle which can be handy. puppies are good with any master depending on the strategy alot of people like punk zombies for more damage too. i don't use them because i don't like the model, or more the idea of undead mohawk samurais, but really you can't beat paired swords with cb 7
  11. I use her with Seamus all the time. She is good at killing stuff, so take her in slaughter and assassinate. I would never use her in a match that was less than 35ss because you usually just need more models at lower point games. The key is to bring her in when you opponent kills a guy and not when you just killed someone because she'll be gone before you know it.
  12. That is correct, you can effectively gain 15" out of it. Sisters in Spirit for the Viks works the same way.
  13. yeah it says the available ss gets bumped by 10, so I don't know if thats still limited to 10 for the brawl or not. If not then it might actually be worth it. So you'd get your master's cache in addition to the 10 and not be limited to just 10 and potentially wasting some. Or maybe then put that in there specifically for the outcasts masters that don't play well with others as they all have a cache of 0.
  14. Also nathan said that there is going to be a whole chapter/section of Book 2 devoted to gremlins, which comes out in august I believe. I think Gremlins are going to be the next box I pick up, they're just too hilarious
  15. yeah I don't think that would upset anything and would be pretty cool actually. Or factions that are halfway between two of the existing factions relying on both suits and using both themes equally.
  16. or worse red joker on a triple negative damage flip when you are the defender
  17. I thought the Deso Engine healed himself when he hit people? That's a pretty good way to heal yourself right? That being said I don't have much experience with him or Killjoy, but I think Bete Noir is awesome. With flurry, and if you manage to make her fast, then she can actually kill a good bit. She is in and out a lot but if you time it right then you can get a good bit out of her.
  18. bump, date changed and it's been bumped up to 35 point scraps
  19. saw a couple in my store today
  20. Event: Malifaux Tournament Location: Gigabites Cafe 2145 Roswell Road, Marietta, GA 30062 (770) 578-1497 Date: Saturday May 22rd 12:00PM Registration. Organizer: Chris (Hookers). Please direct any questions or comments to me on this forum preferably through a PM. Soulstones: Games will be played at 35 SS. Each player must choose one faction. From that faction you may bring all the masters and however many points worth of minions or mercenaries you want, provided you pay for the additional cost and it is legal with your chosen Master, to the event. From this pool of Masters and Minions you may make your list for each round after your Deployment and Strategies have been determined. Your list may change from round to round. Rounds: 3 (2 hours per round) Entry Fee: $15.00, $10.00 for Club Members. You may join the Club the day of the event. Club membership dues are $15 per year, and you may choose not to renew next year. There are many benefits to Club membership, including tournament discounts, please talk to any club member for details if you are interested. PREPARATION 1. Read your rulebooks, Erratas and FAQs and other relevant material to refresh your memory before attending the event. Remember you may play against players who do not interpret the rules the same way as you do, so be prepared to compromise and accept the fact that you could be playing the rule incorrectly. http://www.wyrd-games.net/Ezine/Malifaux%20FAQ.pdf http://www.wyrd-games.net/Ezine/Malifaux%20Errata.pdf 2. Remember, there is a sequence of play (and a chart is provided in the rulebook). Please speak with your opponent as how to handle slip-ups/mistakes before the game. Should you or your opponent realize one of you has forgotten something then deal with this out of sequence situation as agreed beforehand, if no compromise can be attained then the Tournament Organizer will make the final call. 3. Don’t forget that you need to bring all the relevant materials to play. You will need to bring an official Malifaux Fate Deck. This deck must be in protective card sleeves. The store will have some available for purchase if you do not already own some. You might play a match swapping decks with your opponent to be determined randomly, and by signing up for the tournament you consent to the possibility of someone else handling your deck. Decks may also be checked before and after the match by your opponent and any time at all during the event by the Tournament Organizer. 4. BRING A PEN! REGISTERING YOUR CREW 1. When you arrive on the Saturday morning you must register your Faction with the Tournament Organizer. 2. For each round you will fill out a form saying which models, out of your full crew list, that you used for that match. CARD FLIPPING 1. Don't cheat. 2. I'm serious. 3. If you accidentally draw or flip more cards than were required or permitted then take the first card and discard the extra card(s). If you can't agree or determine which card was the first card place them both(all) face down and choose randomly. If this is happening frequently contact the Tournament Organizer as a points reduction might be appropriate. 4. Watch your opponent shuffle and also offer for a "cut" any time that cards are shuffled. RULES DEBATES 1. All Rules Debates/Inquiries shall be directed to the Tournament Organizer. ODD NUMBERS OF PLAYERS 1. When running a tournament, it is difficult to guarantee an even number of players on the day. We will endeavor to even up the numbers. But if there are uneven numbers the following will apply: 2. We will provide a "Fill in" opponent for the last place to play, if we have someone available with army on hand to do so. OR 3. The bottom ranked player in each round (game play scores only), or a random player for the first round, will be asked to sit out and will receive an averaged score for game play and sportsmanship for that round. You will only ever miss one game (dependant on numbers). 4. If we get lucky, none of the above will apply. WINNING THE EVENT 1. A range of prizes will be available and should include First, Second, Third, based on battle points with other scores being used in a tie situation. Best Sport, Best Overall and (subject to the number of entries) a few random ones. VICTORY POINTS 2 - Win 1 - Draw 0 - Loss Sportsmanship: You will be given a sheet and asked to choose the following statement that best applies to the demeanor of your opponent. No numbers will be assigned to the categories but rest assured they are scored appropriately. The descriptions are quite literal and the middle option should be the aggregate average choice. -I had a fantastic time! My opponent was wonderful and showed great character and courtesy. We had no problems with rules whatsoever and it was one of the best games I've ever had! I want to marry my opponent. -I had a really good game and a great laugh against some one who knows what he's doing. I'd play my opponent again without reservation! Might even exchange Christmas cards with my opponent. -We had an average game, really - a few queries cropped up, but I'd play this person again. I had a pretty fun time. - It was all right, I suppose. I'm not sure if I really enjoyed it, to be honest, and I probably wouldn't like to play my opponent again. - It was a very bad-tempered game and I really didn't enjoy it at all. I wish I hadn't played this person and don't want to in the future. I’m going outside to calm down now! SPORTSMANSHIP SCORES / PRIZES 1. A sportsmanship form will be handed out at the beginning of the tournament. This will be used to mark your 3 opponents at the end of each game. The form is meant to be used as an aid to remind you of the players you played against. 2. Please remember that sportsmanship has nothing to do with your opponent's Crew/Faction selection. Sportsmanship has to do with: how friendly they are, if they are helpful, if they gave you a good game, and if they were the kind of player you would wish to play again. 3. At the end of each game, you must mark each of your opponents for sportsmanship. You must fill in your name and then rank each of your opponents according to the guidelines listed above. 4. The best sportsman will receive a prize at the end of the tournament. GAMING Models 1. Ensure you are using the correct miniatures to represent your units as far as you can. 2. Using non-Wyrd miniatures is acceptable provided they fit into the Malifaux universe and you can tell what they are supposed to be. 3. Conversions for all figures are allowed, but they must be recognizable. 4. If the miniature does not look appropriate, then it may not be used. Basically if it doesn’t look like what it is meant to be, then don’t bring it! 5. Your models do not have to be painted. Terrain 1. Terrain will be pre-set by the tournament officials. 2. Please agree what each piece of terrain is with your opponent before the start of the game. 3. Terrain will be appropriately adjusted by the Tournament Organizer should anyone's Strategy(Claim Jump) call for it. Opponents 1. Players playing particularly slowly or deliberately time wasting may receive a points score deduction. 2. Prior to each game commencing, players are required to display their crew selection to their opponent and should spend 5 minutes discussing any special rules or features of each model and the crew as a whole. You may simply exchange stat cards, as well. The Game 1. For all games players will determine the number of victory points scored. Victory points are won for achieving Strategies and Schemes. 2. The Tournament Organizer will flip for each match's deployment type and each player's strategy every round when the match pairs are announced. When you get to your table you may then make a crew list for the match and flip for who will decide deployment, and choose schemes. 3. Schemes may be announced or unannounced but must be written down before the match begins. EACH SCHEME MAY ONLY BE USED ONCE FOR THE ENTIRE EVENT. There are 6 total Schemes, including the Faction specific ones respectively. This means that once you choose a scheme for that match it may not be used again for the rest of the day, and every scheme will be used once. You may, of course, choose to take less than 2 Schemes in order to have more options available later, however. After the Game 1. At the end of each game, swap crew lists with your opponent and check the following: · The crew list and the crew you just played against are in fact the same and that there are no differences. · The crew is legal to the best of your knowledge. · If there is any problem with an crew list, notify a judge immediately. Any issues must be resolved straight away between the players and the judge. Illegal crew lists will have points deducted at the judge’s discretion. 2. At the end of each game, players must determine the number of points as per rules – see above. Fill in your tournament score on the result form provided. 3. Players must mark their opponent for Sportsmanship. Fill in the Sportsmanship results section marking your opponent’s sportsmanship. 4. It is you and your opponent’s responsibility to complete the results forms correctly. 5. Make sure you hand your result form in to the Tournament Organizer. Go ahead and post with your name and faction to sign up if you are interested in attending!
  21. Not to detract from your point, but if you've ever had to teach the rules of baseball to a girl you'd know its not really a simple game either, haha My comment about 40k was simply trying to be an example. Obviously someone coming on and posting "I'm a new player, cater to me!" and "MAKE THIS GAME LIKE WARMAHORDES!" is not being constructive In my opinion, Malifaux has the best written rules of any game that I play. There are still unclear things, and abilities that can be taken multiple ways, but their dedication to answering questions on the forums more than make up for it. Any questions asked of GW fall on deaf ears until months after a codex comes out and a FAQ is released, and after that it is forever hold your peace.
  22. I don't really feel like getting into a full on discussion about why I disagree with most of what you said, but that statement isn't even close to true. 40k has the most hole-ridden, self contradictory rulebook ever written: not even a close competition. Also the Malifaux book does have a pretty good index. I find it ironic that someone complaining about sentence structure, grammatical errors, and spelling mistakes makes the very same in his own writing. Perhaps you are posting to genuinely improve the game, but it does not come off as that. Your experience differs greatly from mine, everyone at my LGS, and judging from the other posts entitled "Isn't this rulebook awesome?" and "does anyone play any game other than Malifaux anymore?" from many people across the country. They have clarified many rules through an FAQ and Errata that are free to download and print, and as easy to carry with you as a rulebook is. I'm sure the costs of changing the print schedule of the current rulebook has been evaluated with the expected benefit of that change. They are also extremely active in answering questions on the forums, more so than any other company that I've seen. Demanding things in all caps is different than constructive criticism. It's not a perfect rulebook, but many of your complaints are extremely subjective. For instance, many readers enjoy the fluff mixed in with the rules, and in any case it is not too difficult to thumb past the parts that don't interest you. Honestly, I don't think that miniature companies are in competition against each other, but more in competition with each other against other hobbies that consumers might spend their disposable income on. How many games do you play? You mentioned Warmachines, 40k, and presumably Malifaux. I would say that the average miniature gamer plays 2-3 games. Therefore, they are more complements to each other, rather than substitutes. The more games being played at the LGS by the community the more fun it is for everyone playing any of the games, and the more likely those consumers are to play additional games rather than spend their money at the movies, or sporting events, etc. Has anyone actually made any of the arguments you referred to? "I'm scared to look at a new book" "I had to learn the hard way so to hell with everyone else" It's a little ridiculous. No one has any of those attitudes. I didn't find it hard to learn the game at all. Neither has anyone that I know. I think your perspective is very limited, and you should take it down a notch when and if you reply again. Read the rulebook for Infinity and see how Malifaux compares. Edit: I guess I changed my mind about getting into a discussion, didn't I? :soapbox:
  23. you could've killed the belle with live for pain and cheated to make it severe and healed 5 before that. then maybe use her slow to die to lure somebody in range for a desert eagle blast from seamus. against mortals seamus' ability to reduce willpower is pretty handy as well, since they will all be taking terrifying tests when they attack you. nothing like shooting the enemy in the back as they run away. surrounding somebody with belles and casting ....uuuhhhmmm... can't remember the name of the spell off the top of my head, but the one that doesn't let them end a move within 3" of undead, making them skip their turn, is pretty fun too. combine that with sybelle's rough trade trigger, and not only can you potentially companion everyone and activate all at once before they go but they will most likely have to pass!
