Soseito
My fiance and I have lived on Long Island (NY) for all of our lives and due to the mortgage getting a tad expensive we're moving up to Pennsylvania soon. Now next saturday and sunday (the 27th & 28th) we'll be driving around looking at houses and testing the job market. Could somebody suggest any towns that have good game stores in them where we could go to play? We'd be pretty bummed if we had nowhere to go to relax. Thanks all. I think it's down to PA, not up... ...anyway, there are a few communities in Pennsylvania. I don't know all of them off the top of my head, but I was both in the Lehigh Valley (Bethlehem specifically), and I always liked it. I know there are people who play there. Anyway, check these out: http://www.wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?38157-Pennsylvania-Pursuit&p=492665&viewfull=1#post492665 http://www.wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?44327-Malifaux-Demo-and-Gaming-Greensburg-PA-6-29-13 http://www.wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?43583-M2E-Tornament-in-Jenkintown-Pa http://www.wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?37605-Pittsburgh-PA-Open-gaming-so-nice-we-re-doing-it-twice&highlight=pennsylvania http://www.wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?36829-Malifood-Achievement-League!-Media-PA!&highlight=pennsylvania http://www.wyrd-games.net/showthread.php?18477-Malifaux-Players-in-Montgomery-Bucks-County-Pennsylvania&highlight=pennsylvania If an area interests you, I'd suggest PMing the guy who made the post and asking what it's like in the area. Soseito
You're the second person I've seen suggest Bethlehem. What part in Bethlehem would you suggest?
Lucidicide
You're the second person I've seen suggest Bethlehem. What part in Bethlehem would you suggest? Depends what you like. It was a nice little downtown area that I lived in for a bit. It has a ton of suburbs. There are more rural areas nearby, but not really Bethlehem proper... like for example out near Quakertown (where my dad lived) it's only 20-25 from Bethlehem and a bit more rural with farmers markets and things. So yeah... it's just about what you'd prefer. One great thing about Bethlehem is that it's an hour to Philly, and hour thirty or so to NYC, and like an hour to Amish country. You can sort of get whatever you might be feeling civilization-wise (or lack thereof). Allentown is a little more city, but it's also a little less nice... Yeah, depends what you're looking for. Soseito
We're looking for a nice rent-to-own house in a suburb-esk area (like the one we live in now). So unless it's a house on the second floor of a game shop any city-like or apartment areas are a no go.
Lucidicide
Well, I don't know how much rent to own goes on there because I never looked for it. So I can't point you in a useful direction with that. So I put three dots on the map, all places I used to live (just to give an idea of where I was). The two in red are in Bethlehem township. It's pretty heavily suburban -- I used to walk to High School and there are a lot of families. The one in blue is in Bethlehem proper. It is more dense and a lot of townhomes. I'd hesitate to call it a city, but nevertheless it is densely populated (comparatively). I also used to live up 33 (the North/South highway on the right) in Easton. We actually lived in an old farmhouse out that way, which was really nice (we used to play D&D in the barn). The area I was in by the Palmer Park Mall was fairly nice -- open spaces but still close to other things. It's sort of hard to give a great impression, but I'd stay north of the river if you can. South has some great places, but I wouldn't want to live there (especially since they put the casino in). Basically, I'd focus Northeast from the places I marked. If you use Ziprealty (just do a Google search for it), you can actually search for houses within a polygon area. My wife and I used that when looking to buy in VA. I'd recommend using that and trying to polygon it out based on what I said above. See if those are the sorts of things you're looking for and maybe you can narrow it down to get a better search with a realtor. Hope that helps some. Let me know if you've got any questions. Soseito
That does help alot actually. Lehigh valley seems to have my interest at the moment. It has a rather sizable mall with many chances for employment. Also, the Lehigh valley mall has the shop called Hobbytown USA. That just happens to be the only shop in PA that I know where it is. Lucidicide
Glad it helped! I'd still live there, I'm sure, if my wife didn't get a job in DC. Let me know if I can be of any other LV assistance.
Soseito
In under 24 hours my family will be on the road to PA house hunting. Kinda excited but nervous at the same time.
