Demos,Crews,and general advice.

Recommended Posts

Ok,so as part of drumming up interest at the local game store for Malifaux, and my eventual bid for henchman,Part of what I know I need is not only a set of nicely painted crews to demo with, but ones that can embody all the wonderful wyrdness of Malifaux and still be able to be easily understood when being demo'ed.

So far,the crews I have enough to demo with are Sonnia,Perdita,Seamus,Von Schill...and Im working on getting Collette together. I am thinking to round it out that Lillith would be a good choice.

Collette,6ss, Cassandra,Gunsmith, Performer, and 1 Mechanical Doves(2 more ready to be summoned)

Lilith,5ss, 3 Terror Tots,Lilu,Lillitu,Young Nephilim(with the Models to level the tots up to Matures of course.)

Von Schill,3ss,Librarian,Trapper,Specialist,Taelor.

Sonnia,8ss, Austringer, Death Marshal, Witchling Stalker, Samael Hopkins(with another Witchling ready to be summoned)

Perdita,4ss, Nephilim, Santiago, Nino, Abuela

Seamus,4ss,2 Rotten Belles,Punk Zombie,Crooked Man,Convict Gunslinger (with a third Belle ready to be summoned)

The idea was to have relatively decent sized game so that people can get a good feel for it. And having a 25 point game seemed a good place to start,It just meant figuring out how to best make each master about equal. Also giving a list to work with that didnt have some of the glaring holes that some box sets are stuck with. Now obviously before Demoing with them,I would have to become very familiar with the models that I havent played before, but I wanted to see what people suggested. Specifically with the Collette crew,as I wasn't sure how to get everything to fit in 25 points and still have the collette feel, without being overwhelming or underpowered.

Lilith is I think a good choice for the Neverborn, they have been my faction of difficulty to choose who to take because personally I am not that drawn to Lilith but rather Pandora or the Dreamer but not sure how beginner friendly they really are, but you have grabbed Colette and she has some tricky mechanics so why not just go for who you like the best. Z is also another one to consider (which I seriously am) as she plays a few trick that people wont immediately think of and while powerful and flexible she wont make others weep when you play her.

Good luck with the application as well, I'm waiting to see how mine goes at the moment.

I don't think that playing a game is the best way to introduce people to a new system. Explain the core of the rules, explain the stats and how the deck works and then have a few minis set up in situations that you can use to interactively demonstrate the rules.

Have some crews and a small table handy to let people play a game if they want but sometimes people are put off by having to play a whole game just to get a feel for the system.

Give them a taste of what the system is and then have your minis handy to play a 25SS game if they want or lead them and a buddy through a game if they want to try it out.

I find that a mixture of teaching someone while playing an actual game is a great way to learn a system. It helped me learn Malifaux, but of course different people prefer different learning styles. It's good to be prepared to adapt your demo methods in case someone wants to play a full game while learning vs just be told the basics of the game.
