I'm currently planning a campaign for a few friends who don't have much experience with Malifaux and its lore and I thought I would do a brief write-up on what their prospective characters would know about Malifaux from news, history, etc. What I'm curious about is what exactly that knowledge would be. Do people who have never been affiliated with Malifaux or the people who live their know about the extensive Neverborn threat, or the Gremlins inhabiting the bayou? Do they know how lawless much of Malifaux is, or about the Ortegas, Death Marshals and Witch Hunters? I'm having trouble finding answers since most of the information given is from the perspective of someone from Malifaux simply explaining their experiences, but never clarifying if what they're talking about is news to a layman. I have not read every piece of fluff however, and am wondering if misconceptions of those Earthside are ever touched on.

I'm wondering how often the canon and meta-plot come up in your campaigns. I am currently in the process of preparing for an upcoming campaign and am concidering changing a few things around in the setting to keep the parties interactions with canon characters limited. I've never been a huge fan on meta-plot in rpgs and despite my enjoyment of Malifaux's fluff, am still wary in regards to following it for a tabletop rpg campaign. What has your experience been with canonical events and characters, and have any issues arisen because of them?
