The Avatar model is an allowed proxy for the Brutal Emissary in normal game, but you will have to source the cards yourself. Otherwise you're right it is only campaign games.

Thank's Adran, where can I get a list of allowed proxies?

The Ramos box is your best bet for multiple good models. Joss, Howard, and swarms are all great. Even a single spider is a quick little scheme runner.

If you're maxing out Arcanists Assests then a Metal Gamin is a good buy. Now you're on the dirty road of Arcanists, stay golden.

What I liked about Hoff box was all the minion constructs could be used by Lucius... once I start on Ramos, then I own an Arcanist master, and as I already have Zoraida and a load of Gremlins, I am already straddling... and ghostbusters taught us to never cross the streams. I need to keep my eye on the prize.... the only non-guild I may be tempted into is Rail Golem, just because it is an awesome mega mini to buff Hoff...

You get two hunters in his box.

Apart from that, the people above me see to have very solid suggestions.

A second watcher would be very nice but I don't see why you would need a second guardian really, for just a couple of stones more you can get some really solid beaters.

If this is true then great. I wont buy a second box just to get a double hoffman, extra guard and watcher... easier to look for another watcher...

    Hi,

Two watchers and hunters are very nice, so I would definitely consider buying them.

Guardians give mixed opinions. I know @PanzerHarris plays with two of them. I rarely field mine even in Hoff crews.

I would strongly consider The Emissary or Hoffman Avatar, mobile toolkit from arcanists and probably the Ramos box for Howard and Joss

    Thanks,

Can you use the hoffman avatar? Or would that be restricted to campaign games?

  5. Hi all,

I have expanded my Lucius by getting the Hoff box to get the hunter, watcher and guardian.

I have already got two wardens, Ryle and a Peacekeeper.

What other constructs work well with Hoff? Is it necessary to get a second box to get double hunter, watcher and guardian options?, is Rail Golem needed?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

If you're focusing with the riflemen do you really need a 9 point henchman sitting there all game just handing out redundant + flips? Seems too expensive for too little gain.

Lucius is one of my favorite masters to play, so that's why he's tier 1 to me. :P

The free focus for zero gives the option of two attacks, and the extra plus is all that's left after the first plus gets lost on cover, camouflage or hard to wound. Also if you have 3 rifles, or two rifles and a pathfinder, he's a force multiplier for all three... having said that I know what you mean.  Maybe summoning upgrade gives him something to do whilst he is hanging back.

I have converted Lucius to be playing a violin, and the scribe has a wine bottle on his tray, in my crew he is the Sommelier not the scribe. This is why they are tier 1 for me. He plays the violin and drinks fine wine whilst he wins. His Sommelier uses Red Wine not Red Tape. You can't refuse the chateau 1897....

Dashel got a summoning upgrade for free which is a pretty fun boost.

The last book had witchling thralls which are high-powered minions who automatically pass horror duels, tailored for dear old Lucius. He can also hire terracotta warriors from TT who defend other models and can let you trade your bad cards for soulstones through devil's deal.

Avatars are campaign play only, emmissaries are their equivalent's in normal games and the model is good but the special upgrade for Lucius isn't very high-powered in my eyes.

Ludwig where can I get the dashel upgrade... only via the 4th book or is it wave 3 card?  Or wave 4? Do they sell it as card decks?

  8. Yeah but scheming is always easier once you have dealt with a few threats... I've tried scheming with Lucius and not dealing with the threats... all my minions tend to die.  So maybe you need to lay down a bit of early game pain with the rifle dashel. Then switch to more scheming. It's malifaux so pretty much every post can be countered with a situationally dependant what if....  there is no one size fits all, but that's a positive in my book. Back to OP, what's good with Lucius, riflemem, dashel and traps combo get my vote.

  9. This is one reason I love him.

Guild riflemen with dashel behind.  Focus for zero, ready aim. First shot = firing line, ram. Rifle 2nd ram. Fire for + on flip.

so that's 2+ on flip, +on damage with double crib built for 3,4,6. 2nd shot is only +duel, 1ram. For 2,3,5. Then we companion for number two. Repeat. Still alive? Number 3. Still alive?. Ok Lucius can you command presence or better still issue command take aim? What's that you can do it three times...? Still alive? Secret assets with vengeance shot for 0.

Trying to rush the gunline? What your past the four traps and pathfinder already? ... oh your melee monster finally made it. Scribe hands out red tape. Enjoy.

this is why we love him.

  10. Played twice today against friend who was running perdita with Nino, brutal emissary, Ryle, austringer, nephelim, watcher,

first match - I took lawyer, 3 guards, dashel, pathfinder, warden, scribe, traps.  Went pretty well. I turtled in one corner so he couldn't bring his slow guys or guns to bear, but with corner deployment the guards are waaaay to slow...maybe need a sgt for speed buff or mounted guard. The 'what lackeys are for' worked really well. Couldnt stop perdita luring/ obeying my guards towards them for easy headhunter points...

second game was better for extraction. I set up dashel with two riflemen on one flank, killed Nino in first activation due to close set up. Pathfinder and 4 traps in the centre slowed his crew down long enough for Lucius and two warden to take centre around informant. Red tape all over Ryle and Brutal emissary rendered them useless. All gravy. Predita shot one warden and two traps dead on one activation.... nevertheless it was a win.

need to experiment with brutal emissary providing heals in tandem with devils deal. Also want to trial mounted guards and guard sgt. I think dashel and two rifles, along with pathfinder are  nearly auto-include....

  11. I had my first Lucius game for a while today, after a 8 month break.

I took, Lucius, The Scribe, Dashel, Pathfinder, Austringer, 2 x Wardens and a Lawyer. It was pretty solid, although I was rusty on my combo's etc.  I also have, riflemen, and extra guards, austringers, wardens, lawyers. I dont have any hounds or hunters, although thinking about it.

As I have been away a while I have missed the following:

    - emissaries, sanctioned spell casters, manifests/avatars?, mounted guards, queeg... not sure what else over past 8 months or so.

Are there any key things I should be looking into out of the above, and how important are they for my Lucius crew?

Thank in advance for any advice to a rusty player.

  12. I have just started with Lucius following two years with gremlins. He is my first non gremlin master.

I read this entire post and other Lucius posts before buying him and was worried about his playability and competitiveness. However I loved the fluff and the lawyers so went with him anyway.

    First impressions

-wardens seem very well suited to his crew providing solid anchors for the more squishy pathfinders, guild guards and rifleman.

    - line in sand is actually doable every time with secret assets two lawyers and plant evidence on sgt. You can pretty much leave it till turn 4 or 5 which is great as you can focus on strategy and denial up till then.

    - pathfinder or two are ace. Put them on a flank in the middle drop traps fire and retreat or focus fire or drop marker and general skirmishing. Once the rest of the crew catch up he can be commanded by Lucius for more joy.

    - can't see the point in guards when you could have lawyer rifleman pathfinder or warden for a couple more stones.

    - don't think the scribe is worth it I'd rather have two stones or a trap.

I think highest authority is very powerful on lawyers and Lucius as attackers can't cheat without focus.

I think if you focus on schemes and not killing enemies, make good use of terrain to block line of sight etc then the crew is competitive. I wouldn't fancy it on very low terrain boards though.

Managed to stand toe to toe with a Kiria resser hoard last night and the wardens and dashel were slaying undead left right and centre whilst lawyers and Lucius claimed objectives and schemes. Secret asset sniper kill on rogue necromancy (pre weakened from pathfinder)... Sweet.

Oh yeah and I miss bayou two card and reckless.

  13. I've bought him because he looks awesome. Ill play him in several fun games, if i can work out a competitive build for him after that I might use him in tournaments, if not, then he can be a fun model to use occasionally, and will look cool 365 days a year on the shelf!

yes he's pricey, and its definitely a luxury purchase in my book.... in no way 'essential'.   having said that I'm pretty sure most people have blown $60 on a night out on booze and then felt awful the next day... at least you will have something more than a hangover after this splurge...

*yes in case your wondering, i calculate the cost of all normal purchases by dividing it by pints.  New jumper? its only 3 pints?   ;) (in london!)

  14. I'm going to break with the consensus and say i think Ulix looks dope.

I don't want, or need, another hill billy, Ive got loads of that already with my bayous etc,  this guys is actually seriousley cool.

I like the odysseus references, and i also like the ahab peg leg theme, searching for the white whale pig that took his leg.

i think his mechanics are ok, but not jaw dropping must-have, if he had been another hill billy, i would have given him a miss. But as a wise, tough, mean old hero adventurer> ?

to quote the seagulls on finding nemo . . .  MINE!!!

  15. You can buy gracie in stores. You can also buy Somer and Peachs and then convert Peaches as ether Old Major or The Sow. Plastic Warpig was available at Gencon. Ive also seen converted Warhammer Pigs.   Type Malifaux Old Major into Google 'Images' and you should get some good sites and pics.

On your earlier comments my thoughts are

    - skeeters are good generally, for disrupting your opponent, they don't have to be massed to be effective, a single skeeter can also be good.  i would always take skeeters, except when the schemes/strategy call for Old Cranky as defensive buff, typically i would take cranky for reckoning, and also if the scheme pool is heavy with assassination, vendetta etc.

    - Somer builds, the main bonus to his flexibility is taking a 100SS pool, and then custom building his list to match your scheme, strategies, opponent and terrain.  no one list is 'best'. If you've got the kin, some pigs, slops haulers, lenny, burt, pigapult, sammy etc then your pretty set. Basically Somer can use everything bar brewmaster crew, which is pretty specific to brewer. Also if you want to go all pigs then Ulix is prob better bet.

    - I would recommend you have Somer and Orphelia and play Orphelia for offensive Scheme / starts and Somer for scheme marker heavy schemes and starts. They both use the same general pool of models as support.

Im going to 'Park' my somer and orphelia and start building my Ulix and Brewmaster crews.... just waiting for my warping and whisky golem to arrive.... *ren&stimpy... JOY!*

    Welcome to Gremlins!

  16. Is there a tactic thread or other good resources for running the basic zoraida crew?

I have assembled and painted the metal box set with 2x waldegeist 3 x silurid juju and a doll. With a couple of upgrades this is 50 ss.

I have played loads of games as gremlins, but I'm new to this crew and would appreciate any guidance on strategy or tactics with the crew.

    Cheers

  17. Yes Malal! now we are talking, I have done this and loved it, very nice watching people trying to decide what to do with their 1 activation after you've sent 2 stuffed pigs and Pere into their back line! you can also try sniping Pere with Rami after hes been pigapulted into place... also nice to frame Pere for Murder than send him in...although you need to watch out for burning and poison...

  18. if you want to maximise skeeter spam I have tried this combo (clearly needs good flips /cheats)

Basically my thinking is, if I have to kill a minion to summon a skeeter, I want to get the most out of the minion I am killing, i.e. By killing one Bayou Grem you can get

    • A pig
    • Another gremlin
    • 2 cards
    • A skeeter

This is how we do it…  (from memory – I don’t have my cards to hand)

Lenny whacks bayou (1) for weak damage - gain a damaged piglet (1)

Lenny whacks bayou (2) for weak damage - gain a damaged piglet (2)

*Remember you can cheat down, and also you can bayou two card to ensure weak damage.

Depending on your hand, use Somers 0 to give the skeeters the required suit for skeeter trigger. Use stones, cards, and bayou two card to try and get suit needed for Somer to do git yer bro.

Somer gits yer bro from bayou (1) - does 2 damage to it - gain a damaged bayou (4)

Somer gits yer bro from bayou (2) - does 2 damage to it - gains damaged bayou (5)

Somer gits yer bro from bayou (3) - does 2 damage to it - gains damaged bayou (6)

Bayou (1) and (2) should now only have 1 wd left.

Bayou (3) and Bayou (4) can activate and go reckless (reduced by Lennys aura to 1wd) to also drop down to 1wd each. You can just pass with them.

Skeeter 1 kills damaged bayou 1 - gain a Skeeter (3) draw two cards from Somer for killing a grem

Skeeter 1 kills damaged bayou 2 - gain a Skeeter (4) plus draw two cards from Somer

Skeeter 2 kills damaged bayou 3 - gain a Skeeter (5) plus draw two cards from Somer

Skeeter 2 kills damaged bayou 4 - gain a Skeeter (6) plus draw two cards from Somer

Slop hauler heals Bayou 5 Bayou 6 and both Pigs

Under perfect conditions, (which wont be often!) by killing your 4 Bayou Gremlins (3 @3SS = 9SS plus one summoned) you could potentially gain:

    • 2 pigs (8SS)
    • 4 skeeter (8SS)
    • 2 Bayou (6SS)
    •  8 cards.

That’s a net gain of 13SS and 5 models as well as a new hand of cards. Not bad for turn 1!

You can now launch your 6 Skeeters at the enemy…..

Clearly you need good flips and cards, but bayou two cards helps… it’s also fun to see the opponents face when you do pull it off!
