If I remember correctly the D&D 3rd edition had a stock of named characters that they used in the examples and the rules would use the pronoun that fit the gender of the one used i that sections examples. eg. the setion on melee attacks used Lady Justice in all the examples and used she/her in the body of the rules as well. Then the section on summoning mechanics used Nicodem and him/he.
