  1. Well, if Wyrd is not the only miniatures company using the same mold making company, then they cannot be the only ones making such nice plastic models. WWX's models supposedly come from the same facility, using the same materials. So, unless their sculpts are just garbage, then that's at least two companies completely on par with each other. Adding in that WWX is a brand new game, no previous editions with metal models and possible scale differences, I'd say they've hit the ground running, and have certainly hit their stride. The only thing left to see is their product on store shelves side by side with Malifaux.

Wyrd is using Ghost Studios for their plastics, the same guys that did the Battletech plastics and most of Wargames Factory's plastics (not even getting involved with that). While the quality, especially with the Wargames Factory stuff, is "negotiable" the models that I have seen have at least been in scale.

  3. Is there an ETA on Freikorps set getting ready for adepticon. Just want to utilize the limited resources I have.

I don't think we have seen anything for the Frekorps yet, so I wouldn't get my hopes up for Adepticon. However....if this is the famous Boltgun that I am guessing it is I have no doubt you can make a killer crew out of the current metals plus proxies and conversions for anything not released yet!

  4. They look way better than the first miniatures that I painted. You are already off to a great start!

There is nothing wrong with using washes, they are a valuable tool in your tool box. I will also sometimes go back over the wash again with paint. The big recommendation I would give for diluting washes is use an acrylic medium in place of water- GW Lahmian Medium is actually really good for this if you can stomach the inflated price tag.

  5. I am with you on the odd Effigy heights, but heads and hands not matching bodies?

The Death Marshall thing was noted as being intentional, but mentioning the story as to why there is a giant Death Marshall before it was released would have went a long way towards minimizing people asking why he is so out of scale. Waiting until afterwards, even if it was intentional, makes it seem like a "Oh, we meant to do that..." type situation.

When it comes to scale going smaller is actually more forgiving. Generally, the noted scale (say, 30mm) is for a six foot tall man. It is pretty rare to go much larger than that in real life, but it is very common to be shorter.

  6. Which is one of the reasons I prefer plastics so much. Some of these sculpts (like Harold) would pretty much collapse under their own weight in metal, let alone be transportable or usable on the table. (Nekima, I'm looking at you)

Just to play Devil's advocate, the little claw arms on plastic Howard's body look like they are just waiting to get snapped off during transport and play.....

  7. I think the point is to keep it from becoming an issue again. The metals had some off sized models. They looked cool, yeah, but were still oversized. Now that the model line is being redone why repeat the mistakes of the past?

Also, this game isn't like Warhammer or 40k. I those games you can use whatever base came with the model, and in some cases it may be a slight advantage (or disadvantage) having an older model rather than a new one. Malifaux specifies base sizes, and if it has to potentially change base sizes on its players due to production mishaps that makes players have to look at rebasing their existing models. No matter how you look at that it sucks.

We also want to avoid models that are absurdly oversized for their bases. That just makes Wyrd's quality control look bad.

  8. I really like this idea, and the modelling material you used looks excellent. Misaki just ruins it for me. She looks silly as it is in her regular pose, and turning the model a bit so she is between two bamboo stalks still makes her look a bit....off. But don't let that dissuade you, you are onto something cool here and I am looking forwards to seeing some more!

  9. The models do look nice......and like they are going to constantly have parts snapping off of them. I would be afraid to snag on anything taking the models into and out of a figure case or moving them on a battlefield.

That Brass Arachnid is supposed to be Height 1????

  10. Get some superglue accelerant! It's amazing stuff - you spray it on the join when you've glued the pieces together and it sets instantly.

....but be very careful with accelerant. While just about everything has warning labels on them these days Zip Kickers actually do contain toxic and carcinogenic chemicals that will slowly cause damage to your body. Avoid breathing them in or getting them on your hands.

After seeing what is in these products, and working around these chemicals in an industrial setting, I have avoided accelerants in any form. I would rather wait the five minutes.

  11. The old brass arachnid only just fit on a 30mm base as well. I think most of the threads to do with this come from the whole "new is worse" mindset a lot of people have.

More of a "new isn't always better, and it is nice to have options" mindset.

The scale was off on a bunch of the metals. More than a few times in a game I have had a "Wait, that is a Height 1 model?" moment. Plastics, yeah, not sure what is happening there. With the metals it should have been pretty hard for models to be made that far out of scale. Speaking both as someone that has hired sculptors and been hired to sculpt, most companies love in progress pictures, especially ones next to existing models from the miniature line or a simple ruler. Instructions such as "32mm from the soles of the feet to the top of the head" are not unusual. If a model is ending up oversized you can spot it well ahead of time. It is also not a matter of having to make the model bigger so you can fit in more details as sculptors can get some great details into 15-20mm sculpts. While you can usually get away with a mm or two, you should expect to have to do some resculpting if the model is not being made to the correct size.

Perhaps the stats for the models get changed along the way? The Heights got changed after the specs were sent to the sculptors? Too shy to ask for resculpts?

  12. We're just seeing growing pains. They're not doing too bad now, and will get better. In a year, if we see something like the CCK's insufficient connection with his base or continue to get scaling issues, then it's acceptable to roll our eyes and ask WTF. I think they'll be fine. They're smart guys. They made Malifaux. :)

A real physical sculpt would not necessarily catch problems of fragility because putty and plastic do not resist stress in the same way. Didn't you have to deal with the old metal punk zombie swords? Whether you're sculpting old school-style or doing it digitally, the idea is to catch errors before the mold is created, a predictive skill that comes with experience. I'd guess the existence of the Undo button, and the ability to work with many different versions of the same sculpt and re-pose it with relative ease, makes it much easier to do this digitally.

I think they're moving in exactly the right direction. Let them be experts in it after they've done it for awhile.

Thing is, Wyrd was making plastics for over a year before these scaling issues or the CCK.....

Not saying that metal was always perfect, but having a physical sculpt in front of you at actual size does help you spot a lot of potential weaknesses. The thing is, with a physical sculpt you can spot many things before molds are made, with a digital sculpt you may have to wait until the mold is already made before you can spot errors. That is an expensive and time consuming difference.

I would also echo the "show us the models, not a render" sentiment. Even better, I would love to see both unpainted and painted versions of the models.

Personally, as a painter, hobbyist and gamer, I have loved these latest pieces, small bits and all. I can understand why people don't, but for me, I got sick of wrongly proportioned hands, weapons and faces a long time ago. I don't want to see Wyrd go back to the older processes, these new sculpts have been my favorite things to work with from any company.

I would note that the new sculpts also have their share of wrong proportions and bad physics.

  13. Also, if I understand this right, Masters can't take their Master specific upgrades if they announce a different faction than the one that the upgrades belong to. For example, if Misaki declares herself to be leading an Outcast crew she cannot take any of her Misaki specific upgrades because they are all Ten Thunders upgrades- she can only choose from the general Outcast upgrades. Is this correct?

  14. I think he is saying hire a Mercenary Student of Conflict as a totem rather than using the Young Lacroix. I would have to admit that I have been considering converting a Gremlin Student lately, just because of the very limited usefulness that Young Lacroix have now. I barely bother using Ophelia's upgrades, so taking a totem that gives you the upgrades isn't all that appealing. Yeah, the Young can use Ophelia's guns, but their base guns do similar damage to a Threatenin' Gun and you don't have to waste an AP reloading. Shoot once and maybe Paralyze someone vs shoot twice and just kill them is usually an easy choice to make!

Besides using the Student to enhance Ophelia you could park the Student next to Rami, giving him fast. Combined with his Reckless ability that can be as many as 4 sniper shots an activation. Ouch. If he gets threatened by melee attacks Rami has no melee ability...but the Student does, and she can help hold someone off. Like I said, it is something that I have been considering trying.

  15. I would beg to differ on the cheesiness of Ophelia's upgrades, I have ran into other upgrades that are just as bad, and now that they have been cuddled they are barely worth taking.

I'd echo the sentiments about the Kin models in Ophelia's boxed set. Francois is excellent, just keep an eye on his health as he will both dish out and take a lot of damage in melee. Raphael is like a little green Swiss Army knife. Rami is an excellent sniper that can go Reckless and heal himself afterwards.

Pere is the only one that I am iffy on. First off, I can't seem to pronounce his name correctly. Secondly, I find that he is prone to either dying fast from enemy attacks or blows up and damages his friends. I get that he has potential but it never seems to pan out for me. Perhaps I just need more practice with him?

Lenny is awesome, just watch out for those Wp attacks!

  16. The only problem with the metal is that playing 2E, when using multiples of one model, e.g. the Ronin, the art doesn't match the figure so you need to remember which card belongs to which model. Or cut the old card apart and stick the art from that on top.

I simply wrote the model names or nicknames onto the cards with permanent marker, it won't rub off like the dry erase marker will.

I play Gremlins, and none of the Bayou Gremlin, Young Lacroix, or Slop Hauler card art matches the models. Makes me wonder why the first run or two of the cards didn't just feature the metal art, especially considering how long it will be before we see new plastic Gremlins. I had to get creative.
