  1. @Vlad: Aside from needing the Brotherhood of the Rat Encounter Box (due to the large amounts of Malifaux Rats needed, and for the Rat Kings), you'll need the following:

Encounter One, Infestation (Solo Play): Five pieces of terrain, all 6" x 6". Each counts as Ht 5, Impassable and Blocking. Place one in each corner and one in the center.

Encounter Two, Swarmed! (Two Player): No special markers or terrain required.

Encounter Three, The Piper's Call (Three Player): No special markers or terrain required.

In general, its just about the base being dark.  What really sells "nighttime" in general is super dark shadows on the model itself.

Maybe this is a daft question, but how exactly does one deepen the shadows on one's model without ruining the effect? This is coming from someone who has only recently discovered zenith lighting. :(

  3. Has anyone played the story encounters in the Brotherhood of the Rat box?

I'm a little confused as to how the encounters themselves are supposed to work. I've tried the single player one, but found it was far too easy. This usually indicates that I'm doing something wrong, haha. Eight rats against my 25SS Snow Storm crew is just one-sided. I killed everything inside of two turns. :/

The second encounter, 'Swarmed', really confused me. It's two players, but the rules for the rats are bit vague. Is it a normal game with the exception of non-peons carrying the Voracious Rats rule?

If you use a lot of foamcore, you can make the edge more attractive by "rabbeting" the joint. As it is easier to show that explain, here's a link I found on how to do this technique: Foamcore techniques for miniatures.

Rabbeting is a fantastic technique that I, very fortunately, discovered while constructing my diorama. I feel terrible that I forgot to check this forum while doing so though. It almost makes it feel like a wasted resource. That said, I'll have plenty to think of for my next project! ?

I use photo frames for mine. I just replace the backing/insert with foam core but it all sits flush under the frames edges.

haychdee, that is a gorgeous display. Unfortunately, I usually build quite large dioramas, vertically speaking. I'll certainly keep that in mind if I do a flat or low-set one though?

Not really, getting every sculpt of a faction (so three of most minions etc) is roughly 100 models. Some factions/builds of 40k has more models than that in a typical army and they make display boards for them. You just have to be crazy enough. :)

Yeah, but you can't really bring a display that large to a Malifaux tournament, can you? It's just too large! :o

  6. I've done a display board and am currently working on my second, but mostly for my own benefit. I like competing with another guy from my local store for Best Painted and Presented, but it also helps further my skills in the hobby!
To answer your question though, no, I do not present the entire faction. There are way too many characters for that kind of shenanigan. However, I will happily place every model that I might consider taking in a tournament on that board.

For example, the mountain display I made for my Rasputina crew:

  7. Hey guys, I've done up a bunch of nice cobblestone bases for my Hamelin crew, and I was thinking of painting them up to look as if the characters are wandering around the streets at night. Problem is, having never done anything of the sort before I have no idea how I should go about it. In fact, I don't really know how I should go about painting the models themselves to look like they're in darkness - other than picking tones a few shades darker than I normally would.

    Any suggestions? :)

  8. I'm assuming this is the correct forum for this question, so here goes.

Lately I've taken to constructing dioramas to display my crews at tournaments. I'm still new to this of course, so there are many things I don't yet know. For instance, how to present the display neatly and tidily on the outside. When building mine, I tend to use black foam-core. This means I end up with horrible strips of visible foam along the edges that shows up no matter what I do to cover it. So, I was wondering, for those who do, how do you achieve the lovely solid black on your diorama's outside walls?

For reference, the blacked edges on this marvelous piece is what I'm talking about:

  9. @MasterDisaster: Thanks for the pictures, it looks fantastic. :)

@OmenBringer: Thanks for the tip. I've been tossing up between a wire cutter and a hot knife, but given the shallow depth that wire cutters seem to have I've been leaning more towards the knife as it seems a hell of a lot more versatile. As for basing, I think I'm going to go with 10mm plywood boards to give it that extra bit of strength. I'd love to see what your board looks like though!

And uh, @Daddy4Count and @MisterCactus? I hope you realise that your answers were not for my question. ;)

  10. You could conceivably do straight lines with one of those razor knives with the break away blades...because they extend long enough to cut through. However, it's virtually impossible to get a perfect 90 degree cut. You can do messy breaks like for cliffs and such easily enough, but a clean cut......hot cutter is the only real choice I'm aware of.

Ah, fair enough. I discovered a hot knife tool that could conceivably do the trick, so I might give that a go.

  11. So I've got it into my head to build a gaming table for use with Warhammer 40K and Malifaux. I've got the theme all sorted and everything, but I'm not sure how to start. The theme I'm going for is an icy wasteland, but I'm leaning towards creating a mountainous field, like Caradhras (from the Lord of the Rings, if anyone remembers), so the board will be a bit heavy, I imagine.

So I'd love to hear some suggestions! Basing tips, terrain ideas, advice on details, anything!

Would a modular solution would be feasible for such a thing? Maybe a 1'x2' section for the mountain and 1'x1' sections around it.

As for actually basing, how do you guys manage? A layer of MDF or plywood beneath the block of foam?

  12. Wish I could paint dark skin like that!! Uuugh, attempting my first dark skin tone today painting Marcus.

Results = Solidly awful. Might have to post him up and see if anyone has a way to fix him....

It's for this reason that I'm putting off painting my Rasputina D:

  13. So just randomly, I decided to put my new found skills to the test by painting one of my Necron lords - Imotekh, the Stormlord.

I've been putting off painting him for ages simply for fear of not doing him justice, buuut... Well, I'm extremely pleased by my efforts!

    post-14949-13911930386164_thumb.jpg

There are still a few bits and pieces to touch up on him, but I'm generally finished. It's small things like adding an extra layer of highlights on the trademark Necron green glow, enhancing the verdigris on his armour and such. I'm especially pleased with the layering on the head of Imotekh's staff and the back of his cloak!

    What do you guys think?

Edit: Before anyone says anything, there are quite a few molding issues on this particular model - I'm not at fault this time haha!
