Can the jack daw force a terrifying check on it's activation

I recently played a game against the jack daw with the alone in the dark rule in effect. During the game Jack daw's controller moved the jack daw back and forth into melee trance with my models to force and reforge terrifying checks. The way the rules are worded it seems like my models should only have to take terrifying checks during their activations. Which method is correct?
