  1. Pretty much all of my fledgling Malifaux collection is on my work bench at the moment... Ramos, Brass Arachnid Mobile Toolkit Gunsmith Electrical Creation Steamborg 3x Arachnid Swarms/9x Arachnids The only thing that wouldn't work rules wise is the two totems. -DavicusPrime
  2. I'm definitely planning on picking up the avatar eventually. But from what I've reading there is a lot to be gained from playing with Ramos sans avatar to learn how to use him well. From what I've been reading the Avatar plays very differently and I want to learn all the options. Arachnids are not going to be all that hard to come by. After getting the avatar I'll have 4 Swarms, which I doubt I'll ever actually use in a single game. And the way I'm modeling them, with magnets, there's no burning need for more models beyond what I have. I 'm kinda looking at collecting M&SU members and assets (other than Collette... She's not really my style) as a general theme to my crews. Ramos, Mei Feng and Kaeris and their crews will all eventually get added to my pool of minis. -DavicusPrime
  3. Thank you all for the help and good explainations behind them. So, on your advice I picked up two of the totem options as early christmas prezzies. Giving me the MTK and Brass Arachnid to test out. Still haven't played a game though. I'm planning on taking Kaeris and her crew as my second, because of the easy mix-and-match between the two lists. Looking at the new rail workers to potentially add to my collection too. If they can inflict burning tokens, as I've heard, it sounds like they might just make a good model to combine with Kaeris. -DavicusPrime
  4. The following is the text from a question and answer exchange via private message. Seemed the answer might be good for everyone to see if they intend to do this themselves... I used a couple layers of Poster board glued together to make the crescent and the base for the Arachnids. It works out to be about 1mm thick which fits my magnets perfectly. I chose that material because it's easier to cut out the curves with scissors on the card. I was worried that it would have warping problems but the "brick work" is done with 1mm Plasticard which added a good amount of rigidity to things. I am using 1/16" magnets which is perfect as I just so happen to have a 1/16" hole punch to put the holes in the card (another reason to go with card over plasticard). I glue a thin layer of printer paper over the crescent after I punch the holes before I install the magnets to give them something to bond to. Here's a picture of the pattern I came up with for the 40mm insert design. The 30mm inserts are 7/8" circles. The 40mm inserts are sized by just tracing around a 30mm base onto the card. Any gaps or oddities between the crescents and the rest of the fillers is easily hidden beneath the layer of texture you put over it. After you get the crescents and the filler bits sorted out for the bases, it's just a matter of drilling out the holes, adding the magnets and adding your desired base texture. One hint on the drilling of the magnet holes... After you put your holes in the base material for the crescents, use them as your drill template for making the holes in the base so they line up perfectly. No extra measuring or guess work is required that way. -DavicusPrime ---------- Post added at 10:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:07 PM ---------- Here are a few closer pictures of the second set of arachnids... 5. Got my crew box based, except for a little greenstuff to hide the tab on Ramos that is... Here's the Swarm version: And Here's the Individual Arachnid Version: Now I'm going to have to scrounge up some Primer and see if any of my old paints are still liquid. :-P -DavicusPrime
  6. Greetings! I am DavicusPrime, an old gamer looking outside the GW reservation for new and interesting games. So far I'm enjoying Malifaux in as far as I've been able to go (modeling and reading rules). The low cost of entry is unheard of and the number of models is so small it's taking some getting used to. But I'm sure I'll be able to readjust. I think I've already bought more than I can use in a single game but it gives me options. The Steampunk element of the game is what caught my attention. So it should be no surprise that Ramos is my first choice of Master. See ya all around the forum as I get deeper in. -DavicusPrime
  7. I second the cherry Blossoms! It's that kind of detail that really makes a model unique and stand out! -DavicusPrime
  8. Got some more work done on the Arachnids... I just need to get the cobble stone finished on the individual bases. But you can see how they work. -DavicusPrime
  9. While I wait for the UPS man, I assembled and based my Steamborg. These large based models are great for testing out ideas. My next personal challenge: trying to replicate the manhole cover and/or curb on one of my three part arachnid bases. -DavicusPrime
  10. That is the plan exactly. Problem is I need to wait for those 30mm's to get to my door so I can match drill the holes for the magnets. Once that's done, I can go ahead and get the layer of cobble stones added so that they match each other on the 40mm base. -DavicusPrime
  11. So my first crew is Ramos and his happy little creepy crawlies. And with the whole swarm thing the little guys can do, there's really only one way to go and that's magnetizing! I'm waiting on a blister of 30mm bases to hit my doorstep, so I haven't jumped in with both feet just yet, but here's the beginnings of my first magnetized swarm... So the first arachnid on a 30mm with scratch built brick work. The crescent shaped bit of the insert is magnetized. I found that the the crescent shape gave enough room to mount the miniature AND three of them fit nice and snug on a 40mm. I plan on doing a little color coding on the underside of each crescent so it's easy to know which mini goes where when the arachnids decide to swarm. So there you go. -DavicusPrime
  12. Main selling point - Steampunk Spiders! I need pointers to get started with a reasonable chance of success. First purchase: I've bought the Ramos Box set, an extra blister of arachnids, a Gunsmith and an electrical creation. I took the Gunsmith to add some much needed range to the list but otherwise have no idea what I'm doing yet. Questions: What should I be getting in addition to the above? A totem? Should I swap the Steamborg for a Large Steampunk Arachnid or two? Should I bring in more M&SU folks? Opinions and reasoning behind the opinion is much appreciated. -Dave
