  1. Get'cha puppets here! I have two metal Teddy puppets for sale, $30 shipped. I also have a metal Hooded Rider for sale, $30 shipped, including card. Prices negotiable :1_Happy_Puppet2:
  2. To simplify: The black joker makes things auto-fail. If you cheat a black joker in to defend, you auto fail your defense.
  3. Can I help design the next wave of puppets? :1_Happy_Puppet2: Seriously though, we had a great time.. I ended up 2-1 overall. Tauwolf and I had a seriously BRUTAL match. "Oh, you're going to kill this guy? Then I kill that one." It was just trading massive blows over and over. In the end, it came down to whose puppets could last the longest, and mine were still hungover from the night before. Fullborer and I had a slightly less exciting match that ended with me taking his only workbench in 7 animations. The teddy army was scary because if you kill one teddy, you only make the others stronger. It would have been a very interesting match if I hadn't squeaked in there for the bench. Hijynks' wife and I had a pretty low key game. I had an opportunity to win, but I filled her in on the fact that her only workbench was ripe for the taking, so she quickly protected it and proceeded to destroy 2 of my puppets. At that point, she had me on the run, but I was able to fanangle my way to the back of the board and put the last rip on Lady J to win. I was sweating for a few animations, though! The entire weekend was ripe with puppetry. We taught around 6 people how to play. One played in the tournament and two ended up buying the game (Hi Brooke and Adam!). All in all, a great event! Hope we can get more people for next year, or maybe just some informal puppetry earlier in the con. ---------- Post added at 01:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:19 PM ---------- ... aaaand I just noticed the bunny ears from Fullborer in the last picture. THIS MEANS (PUPPET) WAR!
  4. Perhaps this is why my puppets didn't play very well...
  5. Photo bomb! Fullborer questions Tauwolf's move as he plays his first game of the tournament against someone we demoed for last night. Practicing for the tournament on Saturday night. Getting ready to start a demo game for Adam and Brooke from Iowa. LFG (me!) demoing. "THE PUPPETS ARE SO ADORABLE!!!" Winners!
  6. Phew. Done. This model looks much better in person. There is a lot of subtle blending in the wings that I couldn't photograph well (Dammit Jim, I'm a teacher, not a photographer!) and I tried the best I could to correct for it in Gimp, but alas. Also, the gears on her back are different colors. One is copper and one is bronze, and two are different shades of silver. I accomplished this by painting them all the same color silver (P3 Pig Iron) and then washing with Ogryn Flesh, Badab Black, and Gryphonne Sienna. It makes a nice natural metal color! More to come, but seeing as it is 1 am the night before Adepticon and I still have to work tomorrow, it's bed time. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the con on Sunday!
  7. Love love LOVE the piglet with a hog whisperer. He is great for a misdirect (OMG that model is next to my master! Better kill it! Wait, what are you doing with that Hooded Rider...?) I also rather enjoy strapping a Rad Sword to him and running him into combat with a war squeal. He also does great with the misdirection aspect when you have an Austringer out, because it's like, "Oh, you don't want to kill the pig? That's ok, I'll just bird bomb you next turn."
  8. Not much to say about this one.. I dislike the model, so painting her was more of a chore than fun. I had the plaid on the skirt done perfectly, but then I broke my own rule and kept messing with it. I restarted three times until I got this. She looks great from far away...
  9. More Paint Break Updates! I was originally going to make his bird blue, but I decided on a pigeon for a few reasons. Number one, the upgrade is called "That darn pigeon!", and number two, I kind of just wanted to paint a pigeon because their markings are pretty. I also volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation facility on the weekends, and we have a pigeon named Frances that we use for educational programs. So here is my Austringer and his pigeon Frances!
  10. Just thought I'd toss a WIP photo up here of my Pokey Vik. I didn't like the wings that were provided, so instead of putting those on her, Fullborer found me some GW wings from a Dark Elf helm (I believe). I pinned those to her back, then greenstuffed over it so it looked seamless, then covered up all of my beautiful greenstuffery with some clock parts (also compliments of Fullborer). Originally she had a wind-up key as well, but that came loose during transport (or sometime during the stomping I gave Tauwolf last night), so I chopped it off and called it a day. I love the finished look, but all night at our game store, we had Malifaux players coming over going, "Is that a Kaeris puppet?!?!" I'm ok with that, though, since I absolutely LOVE the Kaeris model. Now if only Vik could breathe fire...
  11. Paint break continues apace. I finished up my second Ronin today at blazing speed compared to the first one, and.. holy crap. The difference in my painting from my first Ronin to this model is amazing to me. After I matte coated this Ronin, however, all of my highlighting got flattened, so I'll be tossing another highlight on before I'm totally finished. Tauwolf based the models for both of us, and this little Ronin was looking a little wobbly. Luckily, there was a purity seal for her to tread on.. I mean, to prop her up. O:-) Also, Tauwolf and I played a 1 on 1 match tonight with our respective Adepticon crews. My piglet was the MVP after I strapped a sword on him and ran him up to Seamus. He managed to throw a few stabs in before a Ronin came up and finished him off. To be fair, I was getting ALL the cards I needed and poor Tauwolf could barely activate. But, all's fair in love and puppets.
  12. These models all look FANTASTIC in person. Tauwolf has a really stylized looking crew. It all meshes so well. Mine meshed... until this guy... Ladies and gentlemen, I present... Peeg, or, The Most Fun Model to Paint Ever.
  13. @Hugor, It's never too late! Join us!! You just might have to find a room at a different hotel, since the hotel is full. @Panda, Add a new rule to that list: Don't give up, because it'll look like ass until it doesn't! -- Because, well.. it does.
  14. Seconded. Thanks for all the compliments, guys Juju's going to get a bigger 'fro, if I have time.. 15 days to the PW event!! EEK! This next week is Paint Break for me (formerly known as Spring Break), so I'm getting my crew all ready to go! I just finished my Witchling Stalker and, while not as cool as Joe the Witchling Barista, I'm pretty pleased with him! He took a total of about 6 hours from start to completion. This little guy is somewhere around the 20th model I have painted, and I wanted to take some time to talk about some things I've leaned since starting painting. I am EXTREMELY fortunate to have some amazing people helping me, like Fullborer (who has a number of Slayer Swords, and enough Golden Demon statuettes that he could probably field a large army of Chaos Daemons using them as proxies) and Tauwolf (who also has some Golden Demons, and is a saint for putting up with me when I project my frustration with a model onto him). So, here is my little list, which I hope to turn into a class at Adepticon called "Painting is HARD!" (working title). 1. STOP TOUCHING IT! or, There is no 'Undo' Button in Life -- This is one of Borer's Rules of Miniature Painting, and those of you who are fortunate enough to be signed up for his class will get a much more eloquent explanation. On this guy, I kept messing with his face mask. It was FINE, there was nothing WRONG with it, but I just kept going "But what about another highlight? Oh crap, that's bad. Wash it back down.. oh crud, that's not right..." Seriously. When you're satisfied with it, step away. 2. Don't be afraid to experiment! -- I wanted his kitchen knife to be rusty and icky, so I decided to experiment a little. I threw a base coat of black on it, then used Reaper Master Series Blackened Steel as my base metallic, and slowly built it up from there with Honed Steel and a itty bit of Polished Silver. Once that was dry, I glazed a little watered down P3 Menoth White Highlight (which is an eggshell color) on the places I wanted to look rusty. It gave it a little bit of opacity, because I went over it last with a Red Iron Oxide glaze from Golden Fluid Acrylics (which is totally my favorite now. It has such a cool effect!). After that, I went back and picked out the edge of the blade with silver (since Tauwolf reminded me that the edge of a tarnished blade will still be shiny, since that's the part that is used!) and voila. Now he has a pretty terrifying blade for a combat 0 model.. 3. It's all about the layers. -- You can not just slap full strength, undiluted paint onto a model and expect to get smooth, blended highlights and shadows. I've learned to layer these with lots of washes, and my favorite technique I stumbled onto by accident. I paint a thick highlight in white or off white onto a model, then come back and layer paint over the edges of the highlight until it blends smoothly into the original color, leaving only the tiniest bit of the original highly untouched, or in most cases, painting an extremely diluted final layer over the last little bit of highlight, turning it a brighter version of the original color. This is MUCH easier than trying to paint a little tiny bit of highlight using the smallest brush you have. 4. The smallest brush is not always the best brush. -- The puppet models are TINY, but that doesn't mean that you need to use the smallest brush you have to get the best results. I started out using the tiniest brush I could find, but found that a size 0 brush is actually my favorite. The bigger brush holds water better, which makes the paint flow more smoothly off the brush. Smoother strokes make for smoother models, and everyone knows that smoother models play better (jazz, that is). And so.. that's it! Light on the puppet battle-y goodness, but hopefully informative! I'll be posting models all week. Next up: Piggy!
  15. "I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?" ... I can explain, really... In the process of painting my Bad Juju, I was adding flock over the sculpted moss and added a bit too much on the top of his head, which made him look like he had a pretty impressive afro. The glue had dried and there was nothing to do about it, thus I decided just to accept it. He was dubbed Bad(ass) Juju at the next meeting of our gaming group, and we all decided that he clearly needed a nice shiny medallion with "BMF" stamped across the front to top it all off. And there you have it. Badass Juju.
  16. Well, here we are, about 20 days from Adepticon aaaand... I just finished model #2. I'm progressing a bit slower than I anticipated... At least next week is Spring Break (hooray for being a teacher!) so I'll have plenty of time to catch up. The skin tone on this guy frustrated me BEYOND BELIEF, so when I finally got it to a point where I was ok with it, I forced myself to PUT THE PAINTBRUSH DOWN. I'm sure that's a fullborer rule somewhere. I've also decided to leave all of the bases for last, so they are uniform in appearance, hence the gray planky base, courtesy of http://fullborerminiatures.com. In other news, Tauwolf and I played a 1 on 1 game last week, which I won after a drawn out dancing match ("I'll take this workbench!" "Ok, then this one's mine!" "Fine, I want this one too." "Then this one is mine." "CURSE YOU!"). We should both be in prime condition for the tournament! I can't wait to meet everyone at Adepticon! I'm getting excited!
  17. Whew! Long time no post. Sooo.. 8 weeks to Adepticon... 9 puppets to paint... yeah, this could get messy. But! Here is my first finished puppet, one of my dynamic duo of Ronin. In other news, Tauwolf and I should be playing a match tonight or tomorrow to work on some new finesse-y bits. I think I've finalized my Pokey Vik list, so we'll see how it works out!
  18. What a fun read! I like the way you got into the puppets' heads. And for the record, I ALSO think Seamus's hat is stupid.
  19. And it's "bring-your-own-crew" style, right? There won't be a puppet draft of sorts at the beginning of each match?
  20. Thanks guys! I'm glad you enjoyed it! And Panda, must just be our Marcus that's defective then. We're going to trade him in for a new one :happypuppet1
  21. I've just posted my submission: A batrep in fanfic style. I hope you all enjoy it! http://wyrd-games.net/forum/showthread.php?t=28100 I've been working on my Ronin for Adepticon. I'll post pics when I've got some more work done on her. I've been very busy with work!
  22. The first rays of sunrise filter through the slats of the boards across the grimy window. How long have I been in this place? I watch the motes of dust drift by, almost peacefully, as I try to stop the incessant pounding in my head. After a few moments, the throbbing dulls, and my hand rises to my face to rub the sleep from my button eyes. Wait. Button eyes. What the hell? All attention to the pain in my head is gone as I leap to my feet. My wooden peg feet. I hold my hand before my eyes for a moment, then survey the rest of my form. Crude stitches and rusty pins hold my soft body together. I can feel the weight of two weapons at my back. Well, at least THAT part’s right, I think to myself, and turn my attention to figuring out where the hell I am. I spin in a slow circle to take in my surroundings. I am standing on a table amongst soiled scraps of fabric and piles of moldy stuffing, and a roach that seems just as surprised to see me rise as I am. I watch it scurry away across the limp, lifeless forms of other effigies. The sun has risen just enough to reveal Zoraida’s shack in all its glorious squalor. Ahhh, Zoraida. You bitch. And in a rush, it all comes back to me. The message from a stranger with the promise of payment. The contract signed in the shadowy corner of an establishment of ill repute. The Arcanist target Marcus. It should have been an easy enough assignment. The man was half beast as it was. All I had to do was bait him like a starving lion, wait for the reckless charge, and finish the job. And the payment was sweet beyond belief. I should have known.. Then the battle in the woods, just outside town. Marcus was there, as my employer had promised, experimenting on some thing.. some abomination, an unnatural cross between mole and man. My twin and I were circling our prey, when we had heard the cackle of an old woman from the trees above. Then a flash of green. Then dark. Now here. By now, it's light enough to see most of the shack. I wonder if Marcus is here somewhere as well. Through the gloom, I can just make out the faraway shape of a workbench not unlike the one I am standing on, and as if in answer to my unasked question, the sound of a half-human, half-bestial roar chills me to the core of my stuffing. Yes, Marcus is definitely here. And he’s angry. This should be easy. Beside Marcus, a small fragment of a soulstone begins to glow blue. I turn and see a similar fragment on my own workbench, only this one’s the color of amber. I scramble over to it and tentatively place my hands on the gem. Immediately, a sulfurous vapor trickles through my fingers and hovers above a crude representation of what must be Alyce. It pours into her and I see the figure slowly rise to its feet. “It’s good to see you, Alyce,” I say, smirking. “Sorry to do this to you.” I get no answer from the Alyce puppet beyond a cold stare from her screw-eye. It’s for the best, then, that I’ve only animated a representation of her; not yanked her from her real body. I look across at the other workbench and see that Marcus has done the same, raising a representation of one of his moleman aberrations with the soulstone fragment on his own bench. I signal to Alyce with a nod that it’s time, and she leaps to the offensive, hopping deftly off the side of the bench and landing with a soft thump and a large cloud of dust. Immediately she stalks toward Marcus, rusty joints faintly squeaking. As Alyce makes her way across the floor, the Moleman moves to intervene. I quickly raise a Witchling Stalker puppet and send it after her for reinforcement. It jitters and shakes as it rattles off behind her, leaving behind the faint aroma of espresso. Marcus responds with a Guild Hound followed by what appears to be a crude representation of a Razorspine Rattler. Deadly creatures in the real world, this one looks to be even more so, its tail pulsing with electricity that powers the saw blade on its head. To my right I spot a workbench with a pulsing white crystal on top. I raise a Pig and send it squealing and sprinting to scout out what’s behind the pile of detritus on the way. Alyce is finally in range to strike. She raises her gun, levels it at the Moleman and fires, hitting it square in the stitches. It makes a dive for the pile of debris to its left, burrowing frantically in an attempt to hide. The Witchling Stalker has caught up, though, and rejuvenates Alyce with a touch. She finds the energy to raise her gun again, and with a lucky shot, finishes off the Moleman effortlessly. My momentary triumph is cut short though as I hear the squeal of the poor Pig I sent off to scout. Well, at least I know that the right side isn’t safe any longer. I survey the battlefield. There are the scraps of the Moleman, being transported back to Marcus’s bench by faceless little dolls. A similar group approaches me to return the scraps of my ill-fated Pig scout. They drop a small pile of fabric that looks suspiciously like bacon, and leave bowing backwards. Obsequious puppets… Right. Ok. Maybe I can use these later. I turn my attention back to the battlefield. There is the Razorspine Rattler, hissing menacingly at Alyce, with the Witchling Stalker looking about to shudder itself to pieces directly behind her. I catch a glimpse of the Guild Hound heading to my left toward another workbench in the distance. And then I see it. The workbench to my right, the one that I had sent the Pig to scout. It had a white soulstone on it. Only now, it’s glowing blue, like the crystal on Marcus’s bench. What a clever little weasel he has turned out to be. While my attention was fixed on the battle in the center of the shack, he raised another ally without my noticing. Squinting, I try to catch a glimpse of the puppet that has claimed the workbench, but it looks as empty as ever. If I had teeth to grit, I would be grinding them in frustration right now. Instead, I stomp my peg foot and raise two Ronin to serve as guards. They obediently take up positions to the left and right of my workbench base. Alyce raises her pistol again, taking aim at the Razorspine Rattler. Before she can squeeze the trigger, it whips its tail around and hits her with an electric shock so strong, I can feel my threads buzzing with the residual energy in the air. She’s down, but the creepy little clean-up crew doesn’t move in. Just incapacitated then. Good. However, Alyce’s fall has left the Witchling Stalker open for attack. Not so good. His way blocked by her unconscious body, he decides instead to move to the left and around the pile of debris. It’s too late when I realize the Guild Hound is already there. I yell out a warning, but events have already been set in motion. One bite tears off one of the Witchling Stalker’s legs. The next tears the mask off his face, spilling coffee beans across the wooden floor. The clean-up crew does move in this time. Marcus’s savage laugh cuts deep. I send one of my Ronin forward as I see him hop off the bench, full of confidence, landing deftly as a cat on the splintered floorboards. Well, so much for that plan. My other Ronin guard rushes forward to meet Marcus, but she stops almost immediately. And then I see it. The slimy, lizard-like form of a Silurid, perfectly rendered in puppet form. THAT’S who activated the workbench. The Silurid lashes out, striking at the Ronin. She deftly maneuvers out of the way, buying precious time for my first Ronin to slide a step around the two. I feel a resonant hum between myself and the two Ronin. I take a step forward, off the workbench, landing on the floor. I concentrate, feel our forms melding, my consciousness mingling with hers, and then snapping free. I’ve switched places with the Ronin stalking towards Marcus. With a low chuckle, I draw my swords. This is going to be so easy. The next few moments unfold in a blur. My two Ronin team up to keep the Silurid busy. The Guild Hound makes a move toward me. I dispatch it easily. Alyce manages to shake off the paralysis and take a few steps back, but the Rattler follows her. Alyce, exhausted, raises her claw with the last of her energy. I watch as the Razorspine Rattler is disassembled, but I can see from all the way across the room that she’s popped some stitches. The effort has left her spent. It won’t go to waste. Marcus moves forward. A blast of fire flows outward around him. I see Alyce drop to the floor as her skirt catches, trying desperately to put out the flames. Marcus lets out an inhuman roar and I see the Silurid roar almost in unison – pins and needles spraying from his soggy stuffing. One of the Ronin falls in a lifeless heap, leaving the other to occupy the Silurid alone. I can see that Marcus is pleased with the damage he’s managed to cause, but what he doesn’t realize is that he’s right where I want him. It’s time. I sprint forward, feeling the power of fate rushing into me. I raise my swords, watching them pulse with a faint red glow. Marcus raises his staff, putting up a stalwart defense, but my first strike breaks it cleanly in half. The second strike just barely misses. In a panic, Marcus staggers backwards, but I muster the strength to raise my pistol. The shot rings true, bursting his stitches and sending stuffing flying in every direction. But the exertion has cost me dearly. I watch as the puppets that Marcus animated fall to the floor, once again lifeless. I sit, propping myself against a pile of debris, and take a moment to relax and regain my strength. I wake to tuneless humming and the sound of halting footsteps. I can see the glow of embers in the fireplace. On the hearth, I see the effigy of Marcus. Whole. I feel the claws of the hag close around me. She lifts me from the floor, and with a needle, deftly stitches up my wounds with her craggy hands and shining needle. “There, there, dearie. Fate has other plans for you, my sweet,” she says with a cackle. I can feel my strength returning as she sets me back on the workbench. “ Play nice this time.” It is night outside, but as she opens the door to leave the shack, moonlight spills through the doorway. In that moment, I spot a puppet of Seamus on the other workbench. As the door closes, the soulstone fragment on the other bench begins to glow green. Ahhh, Zoraida. You bitch.
  23. Those are sculpted by fullborer himself! Send him a PM if you're interested in buying some.
