  1. Well it's about high time I did some updating. I've recently finished these two guys: Niño Ortega Not exactly pretty, I know. But it looks fine at tabletop distance, and frankly while the model is pretty cool, it doesn't really inspire me, painting-wise. I put a bit more effort into the other Ortega I finished, Santiago. Unlike the more natural colours of Niño, I decided that a gung-ho hotshot like Santiago would be in more bold colours. Faded jeans seemed appropriate, and the red coat was decided on, inspired by Hellsing and Trigun. Santiago say "freeze pendejo!": Wow, looking at the pictures, Santiago is going to need some touching up. His eyes were a bitch to paint, and apparently they came out way too big (they actually look ok on the model), plus the pics have helped me spot a few mistakes that need correcting.
  2. My area has about 4-5 malifaux players, myself included. 2-3 of which are new to the game. In addition at least two at my local store have bought a starter box for the purpose of painting it up, and are interested in getting into the game as well when they have some extra spare time. I'm running demo games every chance I get. Already there are 2-3 others slowly coming into the game (of which one has already ordered his starter box and another seems serious about getting his once he has a bit of spare cash). We're setting up a tourney come october 30th using the halloween scenarios from last and this year. Those of us with extra crews are lending them out to those with none, to get them extra hooked. Soon as my Ortegas are painted up, I'm submitting my henchman application. I've already run about 10 demo games, and I'm currently working on the first of, most likely, several custom terrain setups for malifaux. So my reply would be this: For a small(ish) game like Malifaux, expect to do some groundwork if you want a player base bigger than 1-2 people. For a great game like Malifaux, expect it to catch on pretty well once people try it out. Apart from being cheap, the low model count is also a big selling point to the people who hate painting (who only have to slap paint on 5-10 models instead of 50-100) and those who love painting (who can lovingly lavish attention on the details of a few models, rather than needing to get that regiment of 35 identical models done. I don't care how inspiring a model is, painting more than 4-5 of it, tops, is a chore)
  3. Thanks for the info nibbles. Actually those pics are listed from the website of my FLGS who has the model in stock (they carry a wide variety). As for the altar, they have the model w. altar in stock, but not the one without. And the alter is bound to come in handy at some point
  4. Another possibility for a Lilitu model: I'm thinking about getting this model and divorcing it from her altar base (they are seperate pieces, so that's about as easy as it gets). Now all I need is a wretched, gimpish, human model, bowed down in deference, to serve as her living chair. Any suggestions?
  5. I see what you mean, but unless my Rising Power is misprinted one has Flight while the other has Float. I have a hard time reconciling them NOT having wings. At least for Lelu (Flight), Lilitu gets more of a pass from me. And yeah, Lelu is a bitch to find models for. It's like whenever a sculptor opts to make a hot, half-naked demon model, they always make it female... It's a Satyxis something or other (Blood Hag, I believe). A Unit attachment for a Cryx unit in Warmachine.
  6. Which one of them? The upright or the bent over?
  7. So, imho the Lelu model is bad enough as to be a non-option. Lilitu looks nice enough but I'll probably want 2 (preferably different) models of her and no sign of the Nekima or BBS models as of yet. So... here are my ideas for models I'm considering as replacements/proxies for the models in question. Posted here so as to share them with others that could use them, and to lure out any other/better suggestions. Lelu: (genderswapped thanks to a file and some greenstuff... or not) Lilitu: Nekima: Black Blood Shaman: (Either one of the above, but the middle one is probably best) (needs a mask) (going to keep looking around and add others as I find them. Please add your own suggestions)
  8. This thread is for posting my various guild models as I finish painting them. For now, I only have a single model to share: "Big Brother" Francisco Ortega I've aimed to give each of the Ortegas a distinct look and personality. As Francisco is the snazziest dresser, the eldest (who isn't certifiable, anyway) and a duellist, I decided he would be the fanciest. I've looked at Mariachis for inspiration for his look. The embroidered white trim on his coat looks pretty crappy blown up with macro photography like this. But at a few feet's distance, looking down at him on a tabletop, it actually does work. Gold-plated, silver-handled peacebringer, and gold-plated sword on his back. Silver ornamented sombrero. It's clear that Francisco is more about style than substance. Apart from the fanciness, I've tried to make him seem like a grizzled old mutt. Slightly greying hair and a stern scowl pulls it off to make him the eldest and most severe of the Familia. Currently on the drawing table: Niño (no WIP pics though as currently he's really just a mess of various brown, black and grey base colours)
  9. Finally got a few photos snapped of my first Malifaux starter (and the only one I've painted so far). So I'll let that kick off the showcase thread for my neverborn. Starting with the tots: For the tots I tried to make an exaggerated "baby" skin colour. Going from purple up to a light skin colour, I added pink by ear. The blending could be smoother and it's easy enough to pick apart, but overall I'm quite happy with how their skin turned out. The white hair, for me, was compulsory. Creepy horror movie kids/children of the corn. Their eyes are painted black, which is a recurring theme that I will be running across all of my neverborn. Mature: For the mature I simply couldn't resist painting him generic demonic/devilish red. The model has a lot of character, and to me it's very much an archetypical "stan". The toga's white because I had already settled on Lilith's coat being white and while I didn't exactly want them uniform, I did want them to be visually tied to together. I'm extremely happy with how his wings, especially, turned out. Also, like the others he has a custom sculpted cobblestone base, but on his (due to the size) I added an extra detail using greenstuff and the hands of an old plastic GW set: (Don't mind the static grass on the base. Most of the tables at my flgs are flocked with it, so it's "contamination" rather than strange design) Last but not least, the mother of the brood: I wanted her to have pale skin. But at the same time I still wanted it to have glow and life, not the deathly pale you so often see. Highlighting it all the way up to a bone colour, while adding pink to certain layers of the blend, gave the result you see. Again something I'm quite happy about. Closeup of her face/torso: Finally another group shot, this time showing off their bases: All in all a very characterful box, that kept me feeling inspired all the way throughout the painting process. More neverborn to come in this thread, once I finish up my Ortegas, so I can have a shot at Henchmanhood...
  10. Heh... appreciated, but I think I said 25 or so pounds overweight... not a good 100 ;-)
  11. I'm afraid at 5'8" the big bruisers like Teddy and Killjoy are out of the question for me. What would be some good ways to make a costume specifically "malifaux convict gunslinger" rather than just "random dude with guns"?
  12. Having just read this thread from the beginning, I just want to point out this post of Lalo's from back in january. Holy ####, how's that for a solid call??? ----- Oh, and about the cl0wns? They're creepy and give people nighmares. Nightmares. NIGHTMARES!!! Now that the Dreamer and LCB are out, I think I've found a nice theme for a Bad Dreams army. The nightmares, as done by ICP and Tim Burton ^^
  13. My brain, she has run away.... (also, this thread gives me great inspiration for the kind of story encounter malifaux events that would be greatly appreciated at my local games store. ....yeah, we're like that)
  14. Hmmm... so I'm 25-30 pounds overweight... with long hair to around the middle of my back, and a goatee around 4-5" long... I could kill my sideburns, grow a moustache and go as a really pale (I'm scandinavian) Francisco Ortega I guess. Any other suggestions as to what I might pull off? As I really like the idea of Halloweening as a Malifauxian (and there will be a halloween party at the FLGS where I run demos)
  15. Hey there For scraps with Lilith I'm looking at going all out on the Nephilims. That means tots, young, mature, Nekima, Lelu, Lility and Shamans. The only exception currently, is that I'm going for a primordial magic rather than cherub (quite frankly I like Arcane Resevoir better than everything the cherub has to offer). They synergize well, and create a monstrous (and fairly hard to kill, what with all the healing flying around) force up close. However, mulling over theories and idle reading on these forums have raised the though "what about range?". What about the early game, before I've gotten to grips with my opponent? What about going up against crews/strategies who want to just stay out of reach and do their thing. What about brutal gunlines (Ophelia and Perdita, I'm looking in your direction) that will gun a lot of my crew to shreds before I make it. Apart from transpositions (which I, honestly, see as a "fire and forget" sacrifice of a model to do some nice damage) and lure (possibly stacking double take thanks to Nekimatic cheese) the Nephilim brood doesn't have much in the way of ranged support. So what good options are there, to add to a Nephilim crew, to give some ranged support. Both in-faction and mercenary. If possible, I would really appreciate reasonings and examples of useful interactions rather than just advice of "use ### he totally rocks!!!". After all, I'm not illiterate. I know Hans is awesome. My question is how the various ranged options do at supporting this specific crew, compared to how large a chunk of soul candy they take out of my budget.
