  1. I want to see a better picture but personal I am glad she isn't the typical slutty school girl. As others have pointed out here there are already a million minis of those out there.

Besides who is look at Candy when you have that Awesome Pandora Avatar out in play

I'm all for not having every model default to a sexy female. I'll agree I like them and the showgirls are what drew me to the game but that shouldn't be used as a crutch either.

The main issue I'm having is the trend towards bad/awkward poses. The base and other elements of the Z avatar for instance looks amazing, but the pose on Zoraida herself is hard to describe. Is she pretending to dance with somebody? holding out a beer? I can't see enough of the Perdita model to really make a judgment yet, but I don't think that model looks right either. The female Desperate Merc is another pose. The poses that are using hard to justify props (like Marcus and his stack of phone books) are also bothersome.

I'm not complaining about the game at all. Just saying that IMHO I have been feeling for a few months that maybe there are too many pots on the fire and some things are getting through the design process that wouldn't normally have done so.

  2. It's different every time.

And Death Marshals have been around since before the beginning of Malifaux...

I guess it would be. Most of my projects at work are initiated by the need to fill an existing role but I've seen others that were generated by something as random as an image of an ad for a brand. We have a report that get's used almost daily now that was on nobody's radar until one of the graphic designers used a generic spreadsheet in the background for a product ad. Apparently that generated a bunch of emails from salesmen saying they needed immediate access to that report and why hadn't they been told about it before... :)

I remember listening to a podcast interview with Gav Thorpe awhile back. It was great to hear him touch on some of the flow of information and requirements back and forth between the rules design crew and the authors/artists. It's a great boxed set. I'll bet the artwork is pretty sweet too.

Watching the debate around how the set will work as Ressurectionists has been very entertaining. I'm not getting squat done at work. :)

    Thanks,

  3. The sculptor matched the artwork.

Thanks, that's good to know. With something like this, what comes first? The art or the rules?

I know any number of us would wish we had more of an insider's view on the process. (The whole process from concept to shipping would make a killer episode of How It's Made :) )

  4. The blade broke off?

That would work fluff-wise. But the model, at least to me, is holding a revolver. Peacebringers are blockier with that wooden (or metal depending on the paint-job) face plate over the barrel of the gun and no visable cylinders.

I'm not complaining. The pistol is actually the most well-made pistol I've seen in the range. I just wonder if that was used by designer's choice or driven by the model's design requirements.

  5. I really like the set overall. And I like the over kill done to Overkill.

But I can't see that picture without my eye being drawn to that huge arrow in his arm. It is so out of proportion to the other arrows in his elbow and back leg that it looks more like a ballista shot.

Any thoughts on why he is holding a pistol rather than a Peacebringer?

  6. It looks like some kind of leather cap that is held on with cloth wraps.

I like the human a lot. The horse looks all wrong to me. The legs are way too short and the horse body itself is way too dumpy looking to my eye.

Different sorts though I guess! ;)

I thought it looked like leather too. But it seemed to be painted the same metalic as the breastplate (at least on my phone screen) so I wasn't sure.

  7. I love the sculpt. I'm disappointed that anyone would state those sorts of opinions as facts, and then act butt hurt when not everyone else agrees with them.

I fall in the other camp in that I don't like the model myself, but otherwise I agree completely. Like the model or not, these are just our opinions.

I'm all for the debate about what people like or dislike about elements of the game/hobby. Hopefully the powers to be and designers themselves read these posts and get a feel for the market.

As long as it can remain objective and refrain from any accusations, these threads are a good thing imho.

And not for nothing; that McVey rider is a sweet model. What is up with the alternate head though? I can't tell if it is armor or a turbon-ish wrap?

  8. Did something very similar to what you are planning.

Go to ebay and search for watch parts.

Also, you might have more success gluing the magnet to the bottom of the spider and then gluing the watch part to your base.

That's what I did and it works great. Got 9 of 'em like that so I can switch between swarms and single spiders without a hitch.

Just did a search for "gears" on eBay earlier today. It returned a few lots of various size watch parts for around $12 iirc.

  9. I can try to get some pics and post them up.

There were a bunch of really nice crews there. Overall the painting at this event was the best of the 3 systems I played in that weekend. I think the hobby aspect is more important to some Malifaux players than other games?

No surprise at all that a crew Matt painted pulled out a win. His Fantasy armies were the highlight of many GTs.

Sounds like it was a great weekend. I'll definately try to talk some buddies into making the trip next year.

  10. +1 to books already mentioned:

    Dark Tower

    Black Company

    DsicWorld (great on audio)

    Perdito Street Station

    Song of Ice and Fire

Some Others I don't think have been mentioned:

Elric series (really any of the Eternal Champion books by M Moorecock)

    Amber series by Zelazney

Name of the Wind (and Wise Man's Fear)

    Sandman Slim

Dresden Files By Butcher (Fight past the first book and a half then you will read the other 12 in a month, great characters)

    American Gods

Nightside series by Green (a little light on story but enjoyable, best on Audio)

  11. To be honest I've found running 2 watchers and the scales of justice a really good way to stack the deck to get the cards you want!

Is it really worth the effort? Seems like a fair number of points and actions spent on something that may help a duel or two but otherwise are not being used to actively earn VPs.

Though having said that I'm the first to admit I still haven't excelled at some of the more subtle synergies of the game. Heck, I've only recently really stopped playing in more of a warhammer mode.

I do like the Scales and use him frequently.

  12. Another issue is the light, plastic GW models vs metal. Additional weight would certainly help.

With Arachnids, their legs are really fragile so if the magnet is too strong, you end up pulling their legs off.

That is true, though I'm a purist and hated the plastics. The Wardancers were from the early 90's and metal, though very thin for GW figures for sure.

I seem to recall someone put their spiders on cogs and either put the magnet beneath the cog itself or beneath the base and used the cog to transfer between bases. I thought that was pretty clever.

I don't think I've said this yet so; your bases look great and I'm looking forward to seeing them painted. :)

  13. This sounds excellent. My daughter will find this very interesting no doubt. Now if only I could playtest with her...

Yeah, I'm thinking the same. I have 11 and 15 year old girls who are happy to play Ticket to Ride and Bang! with me but haven't made the cross-over to the mini games.

They have both painted some of my figs over the years so I'm sure I can corrupt them if we make the right gateway game. :)

  14. @CMac

Regarding models jumping together, you should see if there was any markings on the magnets themselves. The ones that I use have a little red dot on one side (I'm assuming that's the positive side), so as long as you made sure the red dot was always the side you glued you wouldn't have some weird positive/positive or positive/negative attractions going on. The only time I really had problems was when I'd put bases facing each other in the foam in the case, then sometimes the magnets would pull the mini's towards each other and squish the foam between them.

The dots would have been great. I'd just used the traditional rare earth discs which lacked the mark. In hindsight it makes perfect sense to check the polarity. But I was looking for a last minute, clever way to transport between GT tables and pasted them all in one clip.

It wasn't until my first game that I'd realized the issue. It was a pain in the neck but still pretty funny. There were plenty of off-color jokes made at my Wardancer's expense.
