Thanks chaps The flats were carved and sanded then had a layer of patching plaster stippled all over then the most noticeable steps were filled with ready mix filler I also used a textured paint which added another element .

Managed to get the painting finished and the ruins built . I have also started experimenting with desert foliage and would appreciate peoples opinions I am going for a Sonoran / Mojave desert feel http://pretaboire.blogspot.com/
