I paint because i want a nice thing to play on the table.  It is an investment for that playtime.  If I wan'ted it to sit on a shelf, I'd just go buy a toy or statue instead.

So you don't enjoy painting? Would you rather play a game with pre-painted models? (Legitimate question, it seems a lot of people see painting as a chore)

  2. I don't want to dismiss people's feelings. But I am a little confused by people who think they "wasted" time painting minis they can't play with now.

Painting the mini is part of the fun. The experience of painting it is part of the value you got out of it, not a cost you paid for it. Otherwise Wyrd could easily release pre-assembled, colored plastics. They don't do that because assembling and painting is part of the value of the minis, not the other way around.

First edition was more complex than second edition yet still managed to have rules for 2 master games. Broken combos will exist in 2ed for 2 masters because it was never an aim of the abilities to avoid this. ( and yes I do remember some of the ludicrous things possible in first edition brawls).

My brother once froze over a huge piece of forest terrain with Rasputina and then dropped it on me with Marcus, preventing my entire crew from moving for the rest of the game. 🤣

This isn't a comment saying two masters can't be balanced. I'm certain they'll balance them. Just fun memories.

  4. "Pandora – Pandora is famous (infamous?) for twisting an enemy’s attacks back upon them, and little has changed in Third Edition. In addition to forcing enemy models to harm themselves, Pandora is also very good at controlling enemy activations via her Mood Swings ability, which allows her to discard a card or a pass token to choose which model an opponent must activate next. Her thematic crew reinforces this control with the Misery ability, which damages enemy models who Cheat Fate within its aura."

    A pass token?

Am I reading too much into this or will this be some way to "pass" and avoid out-activation?

Man, so much to be excited about!

I was not talking about GW. If you want a concrete example, take Guild Ball to name one. Their characters grow and die and get maimed and changed and so on and so forth. Yet they keep balancing the old versions as well as the new versions and all are allowed in tournaments no questions asked. You can't have two versions of the same character in the same team but that's about it for restrictions.

I know. sorry. I saw the GW thing earlier in the thread and wanted to comment on it but didn't bother searching.

Maybe. But Guild Ball is a lot younger than Malifaux. The longer they have to advance that story the more divorced those characters are gonna be from it. Give it a few years and we'll see where they are.

Anyway, I like the direction Wyrd has taken. The stories have consequences. Design space is cleared up. We'll have new stuff to play with. I'm personally really excited to dive in as a fan again.

was more the "worked great" part. That change is the reason I'm playing Malifaux :P

I present as evidence elves riding a giant flying turtle:

If that's not an improvement over normal elves, I don't know what is.

Anyway, my point was, I saw the argument "why can't they keep the game the same more like GW and the Black library" and that argument is kinda ridiculous when you look at what happened with Warhammer/AoS. Whether you think it worked out great or not wasn't really the point. (I think it did, in the end)

Many games kill and permanently mutilate characters in the story a lot and new characters are born from that but the old ones are still playable in the game. Because the games don't really tell a story in the sense that the fluff tells stories. Colette didn't Eliminate the Leadership and kill Nico with the help of Burt and Gracie while Framing Archie for Murder (???). The fluff provides a framework but all games are essentially "what if" style of things. And having dead characters being available for what if scenarios is IMO fine.

Sure. And that's what the Dead Man's Hand pack is for. They are available.

I think I saw someone use GW and the Black Library as an example of how to do it, but GW also blew up the entire Old World of Warhammer and completely changed entire armies around and it worked out great. What Wyrd is doing is pretty minor comparatively.

false dilemma. You can advance the story and the game mechanics without risking pissing off or alienating players who main one of the masters that are now gone, or play a master in a faction that is no longer allowed. i don't see how doing that serves the player base at all.

Not after a long enough time, no, you can't.

If you advance the story for years without changing how those characters within the advancing stories play at all, eventually you'll end up with characters that are entirely divorced from the story. And if the mechanics are entirely divorced from the story, is it even the game's story any more?

Also you ignored my point about design space and stagnation.

But it's clear we are going to disagree. I love the direction Wyrd is taking. I hope you have a nice day. :)

Uh-oh.... I have to be honest, I picked up several red flags in the announcement. Please don't streamline or simplify the game too much, the depth is what makes it fun.

This reminds me of the argument over premeasuring. People argued that guessing distances was a skill and allowing premeasuring reduced the skill needed to win. This was technically true, it's just that the skill of guessing arbitrary distance was not a fun one to use and, when it was removed, people could focus more on the tactical side of the game. Currently there are a zillion different conditions and memorizing them is a skill that will help you win. But what's more fun, memorizing a ton of abilities or tactically positioning your models? Streamlining isn't just about reaching more players; it reaches more players because it legitimately makes the game better.

Also eleven conditions plus all the different actions and abilities sounds like a ton to work with in terms of flavor. I'm super excited to see this!

  10. This is super exciting!

I love that you're cutting the fat and slimming things down to 11 conditions. That is plenty for tons of flavor and brings the focus on playing the game instead of memorizing a million cards! Also, I LOVE that burning goes up during the end phase. Very thematic.

It's really cool you can take two masters together. I can't wait to see how this works!

The new card layout looks AWESOME!

And it seems like you're advancing the story too! Nekima in, Lilith out! Malifaux marches forward! Love it, love it, can't wait to read that story!

Really, it all just sounds great all around. Once this is out I'll be playing Malifaux regularly again.

  11. I got the Abydsinia box + book during the kickstarter and did Kasa, the Steel Legion, and Dreadnaught as add ons. Shipping was $14.25, which is pretty good!

Picked things purely on aesthetics as I haven’t looked at the rules since super early alpha and won’t again till they get here.

    Really stoked to paint these!

Not surprising though. The people that are willing to take the extra steps to download an e-zine are are the ones who are more willing to take the extra time to post an opinion about it.

Maybe. I think they're also the people who have been around longer and sort of knee jerk to the way things are.

Not criticizing that though. I voted for ezine a few day's ago for similar reasons (and cause e-zines are cool) but after thinking on it and reading Kyle's comment I would change my vote to blog. So, uh, feel free to adjust the numbers mentally when you look at them.

OK, I've been playing a bit, though I haven'y heard from any of the original Pull My Finger admins.

If anyone at Pull My Finger has a problem with this, please let me know. I've tried PMing Hateful Darkblack, but no response yet. Who else in charge of the original page?

Technically I started PMF but I left it in the hands of @Hateful Darkblack and @Rathnard long ago.

I have no issue with what you’re doing. Doubt they will either. Who you really need permission from, I think, would be Wyrd themselves. We had to get that way back in the day.

    Best of luck. :)
