  1. I have mixed feelings about Malifaux at the moment. On the one hand, I think it is a good game. It will likely be a really good game once they get some of the bugs worked out of the system. But it is very impressive for a first release.

But I don't much like the two factions I have chosen. Somer'Teeth is a gremlin/pig factory and the best strategy seems to be to bury you opponent in pork. I don't have a problem with that as such, but it isn't how I imagined the faction and I don't know if I want to buy all the models I need to play that way.

Zoraida was my second purchase mainly because she could work with Gremlins. She is cool in a creepy fairy tale kind of way. I certainly enjoy playing her more than the Gremlins. But there is zero wild west feel. You could plop her down in Warhammer and no one would blink an eye. I also don't seem to understand how to use her spells. The only one I routinely use is Obey.

I keep looking at Nico, since he is the only Resurrectionist I like, but he apparently plays similar to Somer. Nico is a zombie factory and your bury your opponent in zombies instead of pigs. Again, not really my style. For whatever strange reason, I really dislike Shamus. The whole Mad Hatter thing just doesn't turn my crank.

So I don't want to make another mistake in buying a faction. It isn't that they are horribly expensive, but I want to make a good decision. I think I would like a faction that has some western feel to it with a mix of shooting and melee options. I definitely want a faction whose master can mix it up and doesn't lurk in the back ordering the minions around.

    Suggestions?

Both of the masters you have chosen I use regularly and enjoy. They have a bit more depth then just Pig Factory and Obey, though they are subtle masters who are sorta intended to sit in the background and order minions around.

For in your face masters with a western feel then any of the Guild masters will do.

As you pointed out this is a first release so each master is going to be sorta limited right now. Warmachine and Hordes had a similar problem when your choices were all contained in one book.

  2. So, I have nearly completed my first scratch built building, but I am starting to wonder how I should paint it. I would like for the wood grain to still show through and for the wood to have a weathered, sunbleached look (i.e. a greyish).

My first concern is that paint may eliminate the woodgrain. I tested paint on a scrap piece of wood, and it does not look to bad, but I am afraid that once I do some highlighting, I could lose the wood grain. Is there a better method of painting balsa? Would it be easier to simply use woodstain on the whole thing?

My second problem is achieving the coloring I want. I realize that this will be impossible if I go with a stain, but if I can go with paint, I would think this would be possible. Any recommendations out there on how I could achieve the weathered, sunbleached look I am going for?

Lastly, I have some cardstock that is molded to resemble sheets of corrugated tin, like on the side of a railcar. Would this look strange for the roof of a western style Malifaux buidling? I would think that tin roofs could be found, I just don't know if Malifaux's fluff would make it reasonable.

    All hints and thoughts appreciated!

I assume you are looking for something like this:

    picture.php?albumid=44&pictureid=224

If so I have the recipe for both the wood and the tin.

  3. So ya'll can help me figure out... tactically... how can I keep the gremlins, particularly the Hog Whisperer, close enough to buff up the pig but far enough so the pig can stampede?

Dont forget that the giant skeeters can also help with the pig boomerrang shenanigans. They are a major part of placing pigs after buffing and lining up the pigcharges you want then activating them so they stampede, and finally returning them safely to your lines (under control). Also remember that pigcharges require LOS to the closest target so if you can block LOS with either interveening terrain or medium/large base models (Warpig is great for this) you can exercise a bit more control over your pigcharges.
  4. I'm using cardboard terrain...Whitewash city which is a western town. They come with floorplans for inside the building and don't really use that much paper and ink. They have a free pdf saloon to try out before ordering other buildings.

Exactly what I would recommend for those looking for good kit bashing materials. White wash city is a phenomenal deal. I can repost a link if anyone wants it.

  5. I hope the good minis people show don't discourage people to post whatever skill level they paint minis at. It's all about fun and learning so I'm glad you posted.

    To this I can only quote;

They look good. Painted minis are always better than unpainted ones.

Had a bunch more I was going to comment on but it has pretty much already been covered, so I wont kill it. :dead:

One of my bud pointed out to me last night that this pig must have been very constipated...the poo pile is rather large. But I guess it is fitting, seeing the expression on his face haha. I'm working on the other 3 piglets I have, still don't have the right style of reeds for my bases, I do not want to settle.

Now if you threw some wings on him and made him a flying pooping piglet that would be absolutely hillarious. Question for you, l Love the piglets skin, what is the recipe if you dont mind?

  6. The pictures are washing out the paintjob quite a bit. Try not to use the flash on the camera and instead use more filtered (indirect) lighting. I think you'll be surprised at how much better your pictures will turn out. And to parrot what has already been said the bases are good.
