Mister Monkey
So I am involved in getting a new forum up and running for the local community. This is generally a pretty well behaved and nice feeling forum, but I have seen others that have a nasty feeling to them. So I thought I would ask here, in your opinion what makes a good forum? CRC
Light and judicious moderation. Without moderation, the crazies take over. There are endless examples on the net. With too heavy moderation, the forum stagnates and dies. While the level of moderation is pretty easy to get right, the targeting is much harder. If you target the most controversial people because you don't like what they're saying, the forum becomes little more than a PR chamber. You need to targeted the disruptive. Those who include lolcatz in every post, drag every thread off topic, or directly insult other forum members. I'm also heavily against deleting posts. If a post is ban-worthy, ban them over it, but they've paid the penalty, so leave the post up. Not only is it more fair, but it helps the other forum members understand why it happened. (obviously illegal or profane posts need to go, but that's different.)
notmikehill
Live by the rule Play Nice By doing this everyone will be nice or just get warned/flagged/having limited posting power. People who seem to want to whine usually will stop if you threaten to take that power away! Just promote fun happy games and chats with everyone! It'll be a great time! CRC
Oh, and I forgot. People will whine at you incessantly over PM and email. You need to learn to just ignore most of it. The most effective moderation action occurs behind the scenes. PM people warnings, pull people aside for chats, etc.
