Spells in Combat?

Wardenhammer

Question

Greetings,

New to this forum and the Game in general. Enjoying the game immensely. However I do have a rules question that I can't seem to find the answer to in the rule book, and I lost patience trying to find the answer, if there is one, on these fine forums. Yes I did use the search option, but evidently incorrectly.

Can one cast spells while engaged in melee?

The question arose when my Nicodem was suddenly surrounded by Sorrows, nary a Zombie in sight, simply bad luck on my part, or good luck for my opponent.

We scoured the rule book for30-45 minutes and I decided, to speed things along, to simply use Nicodem's rythem stick (cane) to whack them hard and quick. Whereas a paralyze or even better Decay would have been much more beneficial.

Can models cast spells while engaged in base to base contact?

If someone could point out a page number in the rule book or some other verified means it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Yes. Keep in mind that in Malifaux you don't need to be in base to base to be engaged, though.

Page 50 of the Rules Manual talks about casting spells. There is nothing that says you can't cast a spell when engaged.

That said, page 41 mentions that you cannot make Ranged Strikes while engaged (bullet 2 under Ranged Basics). A spell with the :ranged is a Ranged Strike. This means you cannot cast a :ranged while engaged. Any other type of spell you can cast.
