Steamfitters are really great for the new Research Mission Scheme. The can get out markers easily.

True - though you will probably be relying on a strategy marker for the third type (or a dead steamfitter for a corpse marker).

I think it is possibly more valuable that they can drop a scheme marker while engaged, or easily drop two in one activation.

  2. If you need ruthless (Pandora, Jack Daw etc) then Joss is very valuable - especially if you need a ruthless model to go out on a solo mission (Ryle is a bit slower and Wardens can't do what Joss can). I've used LLC on him a couple of times to nice effect and in GG1 having a model that cannot be moved by your opponent looks valuable - you can't take LLC on most Augmented models. And sometimes you want a source of irreducible damage which doesn't need Hoffman for analyse weakness.

I take the toolkit most of the time but I think it can be a trap in that it encourages bubbling more than appears wise in GG1. Unimpeded on Langston is very nice - Hoffman's Guild crew can suffer if there is a lot of severe terrain - and if you buy a Ramos box you also have an unimpeded steam arachnid swarm with bonus nimble for a speedier crew (but have to declare arcanists).

I don't see a need for medibots or steamfitters - not that you can't use them, but I don't need them.

Recover evidence seems to interact weirdly with Tara, Lady Justice and certain demise abilities?

You mean the demise ability which says you do not drop any markers when killed. Which you can build an entire Sonnia crew full of? And a strategy marker is dropped in recover evidence.

"Strategy markers cannot be affected by the effects of models" (p28 of the electronic rules). But the marker does not exist until it is dropped so . . . might need a FAQ or a slight clarification on the card.

edit: got the Strat name wrong. Oops.

Just installed it twice on my iPad, but it will not run (opens the "Crew Builder" screen then immediately closes). Uninstalled it then reinstalled it. Shut down and restarted the iPad to no effect. Additional info: Running iOS 10.3.3, but it is an older iPad (iPad 4 I believe). Happy to provide whatever extra details will help.

    Updated App now works, thanks!

    . . . .

It's the bugbear of miniature games, that certain crews function better with differing terrains. Kirai wants as much blocking terrain as possible, preferably severe too. Dashel wants an open table. Marcus would love a table that's entirely severe. The game at it's core was balanced at Wyrd HQ on a certain expectation of terrain.

The "1/3 coverage of the table" thing is a good standard, but it's not easy to comprehend visually, especially if you're completely new to TTG's. How much of that should be blocking/impassable? How much should be concealing/dense/severe? How much should be hazardous, and should it be in every game?

It's easy to say "You'll figure it out", but a visual example would help so that people can figure out if it's the table that's the problem they're having, or the crew. A friend just got back into Malifaux, and had a completely disheartening game ("I think I hate Malifaux now") playing Seamus into Parker. I can't tell him how much of that was the crew matchup, and how much of that was the table.

Wyrd having 2-3 "sample" tables that they can show pictures of, so people could know what's expected, instead of having to Goldilocks things out, would make both starting games, and competitive games*, a lot easier to assess locally. Also, it'd be great to see what the crafters at Wyrd have done. Seeing a properly put together table is almost as cool for me as seeing properly put together painted crews.

    * I've played on some pretty bad tables matchup wise, both for and against, at tournaments.

I guess the other "balancing" aspect to the game is that you see the table before selecting faction and master. As designed there should not be a bad table for you as a player. In practical terms though, you may not own more than a master or two as a beginner (and you might be far less likely to read the table well), you may show up for a pick-up game with only one or two masters and at a tournament you may be stuck with fixed faction/master restrictions that are not part of the core rules. So yes, some recommended table guidelines/setups might be useful.

I think the point was that if you have ordered the book from Wyrd then you have bought the book. It might be a nice gesture of goodwill to speed up the delivery of digital codes to people who have bought the book but will now have to wait longer for the physical copy to be delivered. It isn't as if Wyrd would be providing anything they would not be providing anyway.

The timing is no doubt a coincidence but here it is:

    "I have activated."

    "I am activated."

If we only used a better language than English this game would be so much simpler.

Not something I had considered but the wording appears to be that "it is now the Acting model" p26 during its activation. So perhaps it is Unactivated --> Acting --> Activated . . . .

I did just want to ask, because I was having a bit of difficulty grokking it -

Do I just bring my entire collection to each game night? Like, when you do generation for the encounter, at what point am I supposed to choose my Master and all my units?

If you know who you are playing - sort it out with them beforehand as described above. I've been doing that all of M3E - we even take a photo of the table set-up first. Then you know which faction, master, table, strat and schemes that you are playing and you just bring along the models you need for the game. If I'm going to a games night to play then obviously I don't know who I'm playing and we sort it out on the night. I generally bring two masters + crews I might want to play and just suck it up if I get unlucky on the opposing master, schemes and/or strats. It isn't how the game is designed to be played but it has to be practical as well.

So I ran daschel last night and got the win, but during my game I felt like so much work.  Drop a scheme marker, then spend a mid-high mask and have a minion close enough to turn that scheme marker into an enemy scheme marker.  That does draw you two cards if you use the Stewie as that minion.  Then spend the high card (or high ram) to get a slow model out.  That feels really inefficient, as well as really fiddly.  If an opponent has ranged removal, you better do it behind a building or you aren't getting your summon that you put all that work into.

Difficult to use Stewie as a minion coz he's an enforcer . . . but I get what you are saying. I tend to use the dispatcher as the scheme marker as well, costs a wound but less setup. You can also use a Sarg. to relocate the dispatcher with a 6" place as well, if you have a low tome.

  13. There are possibly other situations where you may not wish to pay the cost after declaring a trigger.

Santiago targets a model and declares Frantic attack.

M Frantic Attack: This model suffers 1 damage. Take this Action again.

But he flips a red joker on the first attack and kills the model (or it butterfly jumps out of range) and cannot target another enemy model - he has to take the action again according to the trigger, presumably even if it meant targeting a friendly model? Is he required to pay the cost of the trigger or can he decline to pay for the trigger now that the situation has changed and the cost outweighs the benefit? I get that this might be considered player error, but if you can decline to pay the cost to stop the trigger resolving then declaring the trigger comes with less risk.

Edit: never mind - you pay the cost when declaring, so you wouldn't know the outcome of the action before paying for the trigger. Ignore me . . .

So my question on this is: wi the faction packs include cards for unreleased models?

Not that I can see - no Dispatcher, Agent 46 etc in the Guild one anyway. The Faction Packs are really to update existing models fro M2E to M3E not for upcoming models that should have the cards with the models.

  15. Just checking that we are playing these correctly:

Consolidate power can be used on themselves, Friendly Minion Only being the restriction. Which came in quite handy in a game yesterday.

A New Horizon (Target a scheme marker) can be used to place the Dispatcher (Aethervox Broadcaster - Friendly Guard models treat this model as a friendly scheme marker - assuming that the dispatcher's rules remain the same as at the end of the Beta). Used this one yesterday to have the Dispatcher placed to catch up with Dashel who had moved ahead and avoid terrain in the way.

Maybe. But I doubt it.  Even without the OOK, in faction, we've got these options.

FAE Bultungin (5), NEPHILIM Tots (4), NIGHTMARE Daydream (3), SAVAGE Lyssa (4), SWAMPFIEND Willo (4), WOE Sorrow (5).

Of those, only FAE and WOE are paying significantly more (even if getting more out of it). None of them are quite as fast in a timetrial, but most have Incorporeal or Flight, so are faster in practice.

Same can be said for Guild and Resser versions, for the most part.

The one reason they were kinda useful in M2E was activation control. And that's gone now. They weren't really given a role in M3E. They're not significantly faster than most crew's other options, they're not useful for tying models up (because Df4, 3w is hot garbage), and for the most part, they don’t have a tactical niche.

Annoying as a free action, or a melee attack (so you can move twice and still get it off) MIGHT be interesting. But again, with the softness of the model, it's just not going to be that big a deal. If it were ALL Actions, maybe. As you'd have to Focus to try and kill it.

Even that wouldn't be enough. I'd rather have the stones.

In m2e hounds even took a little killing at df5 and 4 wounds. Sometimes scheme runners struggled to put them down efficiently - 3 wounds vs 4 is a huge deal. At least guild hounds are OK summons, you can loot their corpses, and pack mentality is more likely come into play to improve their survivability and effectiveness.

I'm curious, as I'm thinking of picking up Kaeris from a friend, what's the difference between Drop and Place or Create in this case?

Dropped markers can be placed in base contact with other models (even underneath the base) while created markers can only be in base contact with the model creating the marker and not other models.  The change means that the pyre marker can be placed under the model that just killed your model in melee.

  18. Probably a fair call on Ryle - I would have preferred a slight Nerf rather than the cost increase.

Orderlies . . . sigh. Unfortunately I really like the models and theme. I actually bought the starter set just to get these (and the Guild themed deck)

Hoffman - They fixed the gank you could pull with protected by making it enemy attack actions only.

With summoning, I hadn't paid attention before but on the summoners card the upgrade is identified by keyword rather than name (reinforcements for Dashel rather than Patrolling Guard). I wonder if that is leaving the way open for different summoning upgrade options or just a card space issue?

I still prefer Master Queeg but I can see that they might not have wanted a non-master model called Master. Did the get threatened by the copyright holders to The Caine Mutiny? Maybe if it was Taggart McQueeg.

Sounds more like there need to be a general rule that you can only "give" an action to another model once per turn (per player) - so one model is not doing all the actions you have in your crew each turn.

Or perhaps the model could only mimic an action during its activation (Mimic ends at the end of the activation rather than in the end phase). At least that would stop multiple shoot attacks and force the Agent to engage where it is more vulnerable. Would be a substantial change though.
