  1. Hi,

‘’I have just started playing yan lo in 3rd edition and was on the forum looking for crew suggestions. I noticed mention of gokudo. I have the 10t stat card box but I don’t have any cards for gokudo and I can’t seem to find any models to buy. Am I being dense or are there no cards or models for gokudo?

    many thanks

“After Succeeding” triggers require the model that declares the trigger to win the duel to be resolved.  That means that Francisco has to both win the duel and have the suit for the trigger to declare it.  If Francisco wins the duel, that means the attacker lost and won’t be applying the effects of the attack.

If Francisco somehow manages to die between declaring the trigger (after winning the duel as defender), and resolving it (which is highly improbable), the trigger would still resolve because there’s nothing to stop it happening.  The trigger doesn’t require a target and has no range restrictions.

Thanks. I think I get it now. If Francisco wins a duel as the defender and he has a ram in his final duel total he gets to parry

Models that are removed from the game are no longer in either player’s crew, so they don’t “count” against the various limits.

In particular, look at the Coryphee and Coryphee Duet, or Ashes & Dust.  The Ashes and Dust lifecycle depends on the Dust Storm and Ashen Core models replacing themselves with a new Ashes and Dust.  (Ashes and Dust is Outcasts, the Coryphee and Coryphee Duet are Arcanists.)

It’s not explicitly stated anywhere, but the replacing model(s) for a Replace effect are always new models being added to the game.

That’s why the Model Limits callout box talks about Replace effects adding models over the limit and those Replace effects failing in that situation.

See also the pair of models Ferdinand Vogel and The Beast Within.  Those two models replace with each other, and cannot be hired into the same crew.  You essentially get to choose which form to start in, and use Shapechange to switch to Replace with the other model.  (These are Arcanists models.)

Likewise, several models have Demise abilities with Replace effects.  Lucas McCabe, Dismounted Hunter, cannot be hired.  Lucas McCabe, Dismounted Hunter, is what Lucas McCabe, Relic Hunter, is replaced with when the first Lucas McCabe is killed.  (Lucas McCabe is a Ten Thunders master).

The rules on summoned models expressly states that summoned models are not hired at the start of an encounter but the replace rule does not. If I am using death Marshall recruiters and replacing models with death Marshall’s as per their grim recruitment ability do I have to hire the death Marshall’s at the start of the encounter. I think that bit is what is confusing me.

  4. Hi,

We have just played our first game and I have a question on summoning and replacing rules

    Summoning

if I hire flesh constructs in my crew and then later in the game summon them with mcmournings ability can I summon one of the constructs that was killed in an earlier round? I realise now I don’t need to hire the constructs and could have hired something and still summoned them later but I wanted to check that I could essentially reuse a killed model as the New summoned model. I think I can do this as long as I don’t exceed the minion (3) restriction.

    Replace

When a model is replaced is it replaced with an entirely new model from the hired crew that is not yet in the game or is it simply taking a model from somewhere already on the table? So for example I have a death Marshall in my crew already on the table which was hired and a death Marshall recruiter. Another model dies with 5 inches of the recruiter. Do I replace the killed model with the death Marshall or do I take a death Marshall not currently on the table and replace the killed model with that. I think I am getting confused with summoning and replacing and the “new model” part of the replacing rules. I think it must be from on the table as all crew models must be deployed at the start of the encounter and unlike summoning a replacement model must be part of the crew when hired.

    Many thanks.

  5. Hi,

i have just just started with 3e and I have struggled in my first game with udnderstanding perdita quick draw and fransisco’s Parry ability and specifically when they trigger. The issue was most relevant when I attacked Francisco with a melee attack that killed him. When exactly does the parry ability kick in. If I attack Francisco with a melee action that kills him does he still parry and if so at what point in the duel / damage timing structure do these abilities ( parry and QuickDraw ) kick in.

Many thanks in advance of some help. I did read through the rules and in particular the end text of the timing structure about queuing actions but I still couldn’t resolve it in my mind. I think that the text on simultaneous effects means I should resolve my action entirely (right down to apply damage, kill model etc) before the parry ability would trigger a parry action but I am not really sure at all.

yeah this is annoying for those of us with printed maps. i think current DZs work, do we really want to be closer?

I am with you on this. Printed maps with an out of date deployment zone is an annoying thing. My fault I guess for putting them on the map but I was really not something I considered would change.

  7. Hi,

i have recently started playing Seamus and nicodem and have a variety of models I can summon. When playing Seamus for example I can use arise my sweet to summon a belle. My confusion is if I need to include the cost of the summoned belle in my crew at the start of the game. I know I need to include the ss cost of the starting models but I think I can maybe take 2 belles at the start and try to get 2 more using arise my sweet. Sorry if it’s a silly question but I am a bit confused about how it works.

  8. Hi,

my gremlins are mostly ht 1. We use some barrels and crates as ht 1 soft cover. If my gremlin is behind the crate getting shot at can they see me if I am height 1. I think from my understanding of the rules if the model shooting me is height 2 they can see me and I can also see them so we can both shoot at each other. If their model was ht 1 on the other side of the cover we both could not see each other. Is that about right?

  9. I use a wash of Reikland flesh shade and lahmian medium 50/50 and leave it only in the deepest recesses. It just adds a small amount of soft shadow but not the stark shadows you get with non diluted wash. I then layer up all the skin apart from the deepest recesses in paints. I moved completely away from washing faces now and only paint those in layers of watered paint. I personally find faces look far more realistic in layered paint with no wash.

  10. Hi,

i have the somer set and have just started playing. He can summon both pigs and skeeters. When building a crew as I understand it I need to pay the cost of his skeeters. I can then use his ability in game to summon them. However in the rules it states during deployment "and deploys all her models completely within her chosen Deployment Zone". So If i mjust deploy the models I intend to summon later with the abilities of somer how do I then summon them?

Also if a deployed unit gets killed and moved off the game board can then summon one back during the game? Say during a game I can summon 4 times - do I need to include 4 of the models I intend to summon in my crew or can I just include fewer but re-use them?

  11. Hi,

I apologise in advance if this is a really dumb question but I have just started playing and I am a bit confused in some triggers and reference to the number of a suit icon in the final dual total. For example as an action I have a shoot ability that has a trigger for rams which says something along the lines of "the number of rams in the final dual total". The ability has no rams after the sh value. So won't the number of rams in the final dual total only ever be 1 with such an ability - the one card I have at the end of the attack flip after any cheated cards have been played. The wording got me wondering if I add the suit of the original flipped card as well as any card I cheated with, but that can't be right as the rules say discard the card that the cheated card replaces.

i guess I am over thinking this and it's simply a concistency of wording across all cards some of which might already have a ram in the action stat thus ther is instances where you might end up with two of a suit icon at the end of a dual for trigger purposes.

  12. Hi, I am just starting malifaux and have the model sammy la croix. The putrefy ability seems to summon stuffed piglets. I can't seem to find any model for purchase that is a 'stuffed piglet'. Closest I can see are piglets. Are these the same thing and the stat card is the same, if I want to play sammy I assume I need some stuffed piglet models.

    many thanks

  13. Is that what the "after resolving against an enemy..." bit means then...after the first attach has resolved its full opposed duel rule steps, I can then activate zips ability and place myself 6 inches from where I was? So it essentially means you can generally only attack me once before I will then move as the zipp player providing I get get the ability off.

thanks for replying. Whilst I have you here...

the keyword stubborn.. does it simply mean if your attack is against my willpower and I have the stubborn keyword your attack flip is a negative flip. I assume the core rules apply though in terms of a positive cancelling a negative on a 1 for 1 basis so an attack flip with a positive would simply become a standard flip against a model with stubborn.

    many thanks
