I agree Ivan is overhyped, but he is still incredibly powerful IMO.

Things I typically see in strong lists when facing him:

    • Gibson (for the distracted + antiluminal bridge + healing).
    • Archivist

So perhaps use that as your core. My understanding is that most of the rest of DUA/Umbra are not worth hiring except in specific situations (like Eva can be great for scheme running with blocking terrain on the board).

Also don't forget you don't HAVE to play as a summoner. You can also just be a min-3 beater at range and smash your opponents that way. The flexibility is really useful. There are some things he struggles horribly with, though - what do you usually face?

My first two "real" games were against Shen Long and Tara. For the first game I had both Gibson and Archivist....well, Archivist didn't live up to his reputation, so I switched to Finnigan. And I had a few more games in Vassal, but still didn't do too hot.

To be fair, the issue with Tara crew wasn't void creaturesm but that freaking strongarm suit and his gravity well. It.......was very frustrating to the point I wanted to punch him in the face...XD I was able to summon only 1 daeva......

...but I just keep getting this feeling that Ivan is Dreamer (pre-nerf) lite...

But pre-nerf Dreamer is one of the strongest crews in M3E so it's kinda complement :) Sorry for the offtop

About the main message in topic - i totaly share your feeling. I had 7 games with Ivan and won only 3 yet. But i see my own mistakes, so i see that it's not about Master or Keyword, but about playstile. Biggest mistakes in every game - underestimate treat range and/or damage potential of enemy crew. To be simple - i lost key models pretty early in those games. Ivan was placed outside 2" from Shadow markers and/or Emisarry e.tc.

As for hires i always take this core:

    • Gibson DeWalt - for extra Shadow markers, extra Distracted and Tools for the Job
    • Archivist - for Ill Omens, for min 3 10" attack and for 4" Leap
    • Winston Finnigan - for Arcane Reservoir, Fortune's Favor card cycle and awesome Bonus action

I took Eva few times but hadn't success with her. I took her for placing Schemes far away and it worked, but just feels not right... Every Activation was something like this - Secret Passage+Secret Passage or Concentrate+Secret Passage or Secret Passage+Interact. Again, it worked sometimes, but i just want more...

I took Corvis Rook and always had some fun with him. He always was a pressure source for opponent and he attract some attention an AP's. So it's kinda "tank" if you would ask me.

Hes slot sometimes is taken by Intrepid Emissary because he's super good in protection - Protected and Shielded aura are awesome. 6" push is a nice bonus for the first turn.

I tryed Tannenbaum but hadn't succes with him. He was struggling because of lot of Concealment around. But he's Inked Fingers and card cycle are nice. Austera and Twigge looks nice on paper, but hadn't did much in my games.

I feel some potential in both Ngaatoro, but still didnt figured it out how to properly use them. I also believe in Operatives, they were super good for me in Syndicate, but not in DUA/Umbra yet (i hope).

Some situational picks for specific Schemes:

    • Botanist have nice synegy with Shadow markers
    • Vernon & Welles is good for protections against WP based attacks and also pretty mobile

But again - i lost 4 and only won 3. So i'm not the person whoes advice should be taken seriously :) Would be nice to hear some other options.

I mean...DREAMER OP.........my initially thought was, if you want this kind of play style, why not just play the Dreamer....than he got nerfed to the ground while no ES masters got hit so....we will see how it goes 😛

MY EVA DID EXACTLY THE SAME THINGS! I think the most exciting thing she has done for me was Secret Passage + get a Symbol --> Secret Passage + Get a Symbol for 2 VPs and... got killed horribly. I mean, getting 2 VP by herself is no small feat, but compare to a huckseter, I just wish she has more.....

Corvis, He looked really good on paper....but for some reason, I felt he was too squishy. I had to burn too many stones to just keep him alive. He put decent pressures on opp.'s hand, but again...I still wish he has more too....

I have not tried the Emissary. Heard he is good. I will try to use him instead of Corvis.

I actually did tried Austera on Vassal. I really liked her "mulligan"; Mulligan - move - hawk eye all day. I think I will try her a few more times, but she was certainly a nice addition to the crew. (but I still lost.....)

I mean, Ivan himself is strong and cool...but I feel like DUA models are generally underpowered. Eva is a nice scheme runner, but she just runs.....Corvis is .......well I feel like he is just another scheme runner with more punch.....but not enough punching power...and operatives.....well their "i am pretending to be you" gimic is nice...but they just got one-shoted so....

And Abour Archvist...a lot of people suggest him in DUA...and his draw-attack is nice but I just feel like i am wasting stones. about 1/3 or half of his tools are useless in DUA crew. Yes 3/4/5 with draw is strong, and maybe itself is good enough to make the cut...but I just can't shake off this feeling that I am wasting valueble stones.... I used him only twice, but both times, he drew me maybe like 3 cards and kill a model or so. Not the level of result I expected from his reputation.

  2. Just finished painting them and played my first 2 games over the weekend with a few proxies (spectors...finnigan)

I was told that he is one of the strongest masters in ES but I lost both games miserably. Granted it was my first outing with the real minis, but I just keep getting this feeling that Ivan is Dreamer (pre-nerf) lite. Like, summoning with an attack is cool, but the end result is pretty much the same: you are throwing a summoned monster to their face - in Dreamer, you summon, than attack someone with reality twist to throw the summoned on to their face. Ivan, you just have 1 less step to do so, but need to manage more carefully about your attacks so.....

then my oppoents suggested that my lists are wrong.....that DUA models are't that strong...???? except Ivan....

    so I am wondering,

    WHO DO YOU HIRE?

can someone please teach me how to play Ivan correctly and share lists?

    Thanks!

  3. From here and there, I keep seeing those reference to “s-tier masters” who are so incredibly offending the game. Yet I just figure out who they are and why they are so bad for the game. I hear Collette is one of them- and I hate her too lol -  but I didn’t feel like she was that npe...

Anyway, so who are those s-tier masters? And why?

I’d be okay with reducing the range of presto chango. I caution any major changes. I remember when she got nerfed back at the tail end of m2e and basically made her irrelevant. Changes should be subtle and then given time to see if its enough. If not then you take it a step further next time around.

Raspy gets my vote for one who needs a buff. Ontop of being below the power curve, she’s just not much fun to use due to her frustrating mechanics.

Showgirls I find pretty bad. They just get focused and obliterated in a single shot.

Mutations need adaptive evolution on the upgrades itself. This would open up his hiring options and again reduce frustration

Cerberus could likely become an enforcer

Ox mages just need to figure out what they want to be doing and get better at doing it

Please give poison gamin the beast keyword 😁

But that's what Wyrd did in the 2ed....They nerf all "tier-1 masters" so hard to the ground.....Remember Nicodem? When Asura Rotten first came out, NIcodem became God...then like 3 months later, nerfed to the ground and never came back...(literally too XD). And Colette got hit with the nerf-bat like 3 times during the 2ed.....

this is topic only abt colette nerf?) i think that in erarta wyrd gonna nerf hard most of models that u dont like in colette crew, but just try to play her-u need always think abt position and her crew havent got a lot of dmg, so main tactic-try to score more than opp, but resourses are limited; i need to mention that coryphee cost 12!, carl and have 0 triggers to repeat actions or doing some additional actions, so double activation seems not unbalanced in that case, just give opp pass token; we can look at models like hinamatsu, fuhatsu, valedictorian-they can hit u si hard and have flurry, some aditional actions with triggers and cost 9-10; abt rider-reactivation without los anywhere on the map is not good, but just look at other triggers-they are useless-shuffle cards u need when u have good cards in discard, add suit is not good at all-just rework all trigger; if we are talking abt broken triggers-lets take a look at dead rider melee atack-this is better than colette presto chango-u just need token, i think that we need limitation on this trigger; abt colette herself-she need to be nerfed, but not hard-it is not so easy to play her

I think the issue with Mech rider is that she single-handily wins VP too easily. I mean dead rider is a powerful model, but his power doesn't necessary wins vps on the spot. Mech rider does. Against me last week, she alone score 3 vps all by herself. Dead rider's "i'm gonna murder you all" tirgger looks cool, seems powerful, might have your oppornent felt overwhelmed....but at the end of the day, a guild player has to play extra-hard to utilize the hole dead rider created, and maybe squeeze one or two vps out of the opportuniy. Mech rider just goes in and gets vps with ease.

and this game is about scoring vp, not killing....

but now I start to think that Wyrd gonna nerf Mech rider, corphee, and maybe soul stone caches, but not Colette herself.

I am curious tho....Does Wyrd take tournament results into consideration to decide what to nerf/buff like mtg? I am not exactly a competitive player so not sure how often Colette actually wins at big tournaments and how likely Wyrd would take those into consideration?

To clarify, Colette can teleport OTHER models 16 inches with presto chango. You have to spend the entire game working around having your models kidnapped and killed. She is a very kill-y crew for that reason. I think it is a bit over the top (16 inches is almost deployment to deployment on standard).

Leave her defenses intact, that's fine (except stunned on her defensive trigger IMO).

But that's a broader issue with defensive issues now that I think about it, since all the triggers get one free 'ignore stunned.'

It is just most obvious with Colette, since she will always bury on the first stun and you never get to hit her again.

Back in the 2ed, Lilith had the exact same attack (well she still does, just got locked up XD), Tangle Shadow, but it was even longer (12 inches range). It was her bread-and butter attack, which made Lilith infamous for "kill-box".and it was worse because it was longer AND they got Nekima. Lilith was regarded as one of the stronger master, but she was nowhere near "degenerate" as other masters.

What makes Colette worse is her defense techs. As you said, you get maybe 1 shot at the first turn, and you are chsaing butterfly for the rest of the game, and her trigger is baked-in. At least make her spend soul stone or a card to make it happen, or changed to after damaing not resolving, so that your miss wouldnt count...?

I am curious tho, know Wyrd, how likely she will get nerfed? What are the likelihood of she getting nerfed?

  6. I am not too familiar with errata schedules,  it since the last errata was last year’s March, so I am assuming that we will get a new errata soon in... maybe next month? with COVID-19, which kinda prohibited the actual games going, I am not sure if there’s enough data to make changes, but we had vassal leagues and Russian tournament(?) so we might have just enough...

So the most obvious elephant in the room is Colette - she is so hard to take down, but one of the most mobile master in the game. Her crew can score pretty much any schemes easily....

from what I gathered, she was the only master who didn’t “lose” any match in fauxember.

Shouldn’t she get nerfed? Realistically, will she?  If so what would you do?

On the other hand... obviously Rasputina needs some love ( and everybody knows it) but I think Mei also needs some serious attention. Her mobility trick is nice, and she has decent dmg output... but I just can’t get away with this feeling that she is missing something...

what would she need to make her “top tier” master?

2 activations as normal ( following the replace rules for the duet allows it to effectively activate twice) and then a third activation from the mech rider.

Um... so this is the part I don’t get. How can the duet can 2 activation? The replacement rules said that if the original activated, the new model is treated as activated..?? So if you split, both corphees are activated?

  8. On 9/15/2020 at 2:53 PM, Plaag said:

due to the rules of replacement, duet can do only 3 activations with reactivation; silent ones can say that all my symbols are blocked with ice pillars; ss ill get from killing models in aura of 2 ss cache(trying to do so)

I know this is super late, but I am wondering how the duet can get 3 Activations....? My understanding is that replaced models are treated to be activate if the original model activated. So even if the duet splits at the second activation from riders ult, both solutes coryphees are treated as activated right? Where can you do the third activation?

Wyrd's newsletter went out about half an hour ago and they've experienced further release delays. Explorer's Society relevant:

    Wanderlust

    March

    Sand Worm

    Ivan Core

    Dirty Work

    April

    Anya Core

    Intrepid Fate

    Dark Reflections

    Not judging, just informing.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I didn't realize they just had announced delay...and gamenerdz didn't change the expected date...so I just pre-ordered ivan core box thinking i will get it in a couple of weeks.....

    great

now I have to wait at least another month...and knowing wyrd...now it might be April to get them.....

  10. Armor +1 says that it reduce all damages suffered by this moderl by +1. So I take if you have armor +2, and someone hit you for 2 dmg, It means no damage right? but I just keep seeing people saying that burning or posision are good answer to armor because armor takes minimal 1 dmg. Where can I find the wording for this?

  11. Hi guys... I have been out of malifaux since the end of 2nd edition and now I am trying to come back. I have been reading the rule book but I am a bit confused

so shadow is a new thing, and I’m wondering if I got this right - all blocking terrain generate “shadow” up to 3 inches and anyone who “touches” this shadow gets cover? Did I understand this correctly? So basically shadow extend the cover from 1 inche in 2ed to the actual height or the terrian?

for consealment, if a los is drawn thought a sealing terrain, then the attack gets minus flip? To example, if we have a snow bank, which the players agree to be a consealment terrian, and my lynch shoots his derringer from 5 inches away from the snow back to niccodem, who is at the opposite side of the bank, 5 inches away, even though no one is in the shadow, and no one is touching the bank (like 2ed) lynch still gets minus flip?

    thank you!

  12. I heard that Hamelin is doing fantastic at the ITC - I am wondering what are the models they use with? Since the a&d nerf (not only the cost, but the fact that he can't be used for 2 strats) I am struggling to assemble a crew that can win...well agaist nico or deep.

Genetally what hat is the list they using? Anyone know?

  13. so If your model engages with 3 of enemy models, but one of them is engaged, like this

                                                             Friendly

    Enemy1           Enemey2          Enenmy3

                        The model

so the model for the hold up their forces (The modle) is engaged with 3 enemy models, but one of them is engaged with another friendly model, do you still score since 2 of them, which are not engaged with other models are their? or do you not score because Enemy 3 is engeagd with other model?

  14. The midnight stalker is an interesting one. On paper he seems go well with Hamline since Hamline can do the rat-engine thing to control(?) when exactly the midnight stalker. But at the same time, He is not exactly a good obey target (since he can't attack who already went)  and if he goes late (as most of hamline's crew does as they just burn actiations) he can't attack juicy targets....

so I am curious how he fares with Hamline (or even other masters) is he worth the SS? or should I just go with SUE?

    Annnd

I am curious if A&D still is worth the points. I mean out of 5 GG 2018 Start, he can't participate in 2 strats as he can not get any conditions, and I think he is not so well suited for Ours either.

Do you still take A&D for those strats simply because...well he is A&D? is he worth the SS now he is 14 ss?

Sandeep (Command, Enlightened, Arcane Reservoir), 3 Mages, Amina, Valdectorian, effigy, wind gamin.   Plenty of beef and enough versatility to do whatever you need.

Seems like a solid team I was thinking Howard and Kandra instead tho

I love Lilith and think she's an excellent toolbox. The other 2 are also strong choices.

For Lilith I would run something like:

    50 SS Neverborn Crew
    Lilith + 7 Pool
     - Beckon Malifaux (1)
     - Aether Connection (1)
     - On Wings Of Darkness (1)
    Primordial Magic (2)
    Nekima (13)
    Mr. Graves (8)
    Doppleganger (7)

     (exported from CrewFaux)

For the other points I'd choose between Lilitu or Johan for 7 pts. And then spend 8 pts on any 2 of the following: Terror Tot, Mysterious Effigy, Changeling.

That's a pretty well rounded crew for killing/scheming and good at denying points to the opponent.

Yeah, pretty much the Greg's list. I will dig it.

    15 hours ago, dancater said:

Depends on whether GG2017 or GG2018 schemes and strats for starters.  Very different.  Also when is the date of the tournament, I assume the end of year errata will not have been released, but..... that could change up the selection as well.

For GG2017 I'd probably default Hamelin for pure power/flex

For GG2018 I'd maybe go Sandeep

But also it depends on what you enjoy, what you have more experience in and what your local meta environment is.  The masters mentioned are all strong and I think would be valid solid plays into a fixed roster tournament.

It's GG 2017 before the errata. I think Hamlien is more powerful per se, but Sandeep is more versatile, and Lilith has very unique play style. I guess I will just roll a die XD (or pick a card rather).

  16. Hey, we have a fixed roster(no change at all during the round) tournament coming up soon and I am debating between Sandeep, Lilith or Hamelin.

i think some Sandeep is the most versatile one, but in some sense Hamelin would be more powerful?  Who would you pick?

I haven't played Hamelin, and I have also never hired Taelor - but perhaps with the suggested change I might do? The same applies to Ama No Zako, but even with some errata I don't think I'd buy her - I just don't like the model... I feel like in addition to the mentioned models Bishop could do with a bit of love - despite his flexibility and potential :melee power, he just dies WAY to easily for the SS investment. I think a simple fix of giving him a 2" :melee range might help, or perhaps hard to kill or something like that.

Am I missing anything? did the podcast mention anything about Hamelin? what did they say it about?

  18. Hamline's Plague pit upgrade gives blight condition to an model which either start activation or ends an action around the pit marker.

What (when )is the timing of giving out the condition? If a model walks  in base contact with the marker and does an interaction to remove the marker, would that model receive the blight condition for ending an interaction around the marker? or would the model not reieive because by the time the model ends its condition, the marker is no longer there?

    Thanks!
