  1. I'm not the OP but I wanted to thank him and you guys as well. I was coming here to make a similar post but found this one. I too am a new painter and soon to be noob at Malifaux. I too needed painting advise. I have only two FLGS in my town and they both only stock Citadel paints. And for whatever reason both stores only have a small variety of colors. The rack in both stores is mostly empty. I'm sure that Citadel paints are awesome but it is the most expensive of all the paints mentioned. As a gamer on a very tight budget I just can't see using Citadel. I also have access to Hobby Lobby who stock Vallejo Model color, which is cheaper, but again, very limited on variety of colors. Sooo...I was just looking for advice, like the OP, about what paints you guys use. If any of you know of any good online retailers for paint with cheap shipping for small orders I would appreciate that info also. Out of curiosity, what paints do you use @Lamby and @Guildenstern?

If I understand correctly you have picked any boxes yet. In this case, why not browse through the crew boxes and the starter set with your kid(s)? For sure you can find together many things that are awesome, then just pick for your little Malifaux acolyte the box that caused the greatest reaction (WOW, DAD! CREEPY CHTHULHU MUTANTS AND JACOB LYNCH ARE SO AWESOME!). Then proceed with picking yours.
Oh, budget, why have you forsaken all of us...

You do understand correctly. And I plan on doing exactly what you suggest. I just have to find a time that both of my kids can sit down with me and look through all the factions and box sets. It is a lot to look through. I'm hoping for this weekend but we will see. I still have a little time.

I second this. While at close inspection it is obviously inferior to resin and plastic terrain, once on the table it looks great.

All the terrain in the following pic, except the trees, the gallows in the upper-right corner, and the big tree-tower in the low-left corner, is paper terrain. A few element came printed and cut, the majority is home printed from PDFs.

    More pics: https://gabbigames.wordpress.com/2015/12/27/malifaux-neverborn-vs-outcasts-50ss/

Also, if you're on tight money, you can buy one PDF and print it multiple times. Some of them offer also variations in textures and detail via layers (for example Dave Graffam ones) so you can print several without having two looking exactly the same. There also some free ones, try looking on WargameVault for start.

That set looks really good. I have started collecting some of the free paper stuff that I can find and will most likely buy some as well. I need to find an inexpensive mat as well. Maybe some printed tiles on foamcore? Thanks for the advice and the links!

There is also World Works Games, which were partners in Wyrd's now defunct Terraclips line.

Aside from that you can always make up some of the more natural pieces easily and fairly inexpensively. There have been a lot of really good recommendations and tutorials written on here.

Thanks. I did some searching for tutorials and have not found any yet. But I'll keep looking.

As far as terrain is concerned there's always paper craft. Those are (usually) PDFs containing images of buildings that you print, glue to something sturdy (foam core being the most common), and put together. They're cheap, light weight, easy to put together (mostly), and look darn good.

There are many producers of this type of terrain. I'm on mobile and I can't paste links but I'll list some makers/key words for a Google search.

    Fat Dragon Terrain Sets

    Dave's Games

    Stones Edges

    And simply papercraft

Thank you. I will check these out. I have seen some of the Fat Dragon stuff and it does seem like a fairly inexpensive way to get some terrain.

It's never safe to start Malifaux. Your wallet will not thank you for it.

Man don’t I know it. As a gamer on a very tight budget, I KNOW that Malifaux is not a good choice for me. But there is something about Malifaux that really appeals to me. I haven’t even bought my first box yet and I already want them all. My wallet and I will have to come to some sort of understanding.

There's a lot of stuff that you can get for free (the Breachside Broadcast podcast is Wyrd going through and doing all of the 1st edition stories in a radio-like format) and there's the stories in the Chronicles, but there's there bits and pieces of the lore in the various stories in the rulebooks, and more bits and pieces of background material in the Through the Breach books.  And there's stuff on Wyrd's website summarizing things about the various leaders and the factions...

Big, important details are going to get repeated and rephrased in various places, so you're not going to miss out on the big stuff.  But, otherwise, to a certain unavoidable extent, they charge money for the books so they can pay people to write the books.

Wow thank you! I just looked up Breachside Broadcast and it sounds awesome. I think that it alone will keep me busy for a while. I will then check out the Chronicles, whatever they are . I completely understand why they charge for this stuff though. They clearly put out a good product and, as far as I can tell, have backed it up with a pretty awesome story. Wyrd seems to really care about Malifaux and obviously want their customers to love it too. They seem to be a really cool company. I can't wait until I can actually get started with the game.

  8. Ok this is probably a stupid question but is there any way to get all of the Malifaux lore without buying all of the rules manuals? I don’t need all of the manuals and can’t afford them all. I love all of the lore that  I have read so far on the Malifaux site but would love to read all of it.

Lord know why I didn't think of this before,(shine) you should play Gremlin. Whiskeyjumper.

Hah! The name does sort of fit doesn't it?

To answer your question, not completely. I'm pretty sure that I like Neverborn best, followed by Gremlins but I have been thinking that I will most likely go with the starter set to begin with. It just make the most sense I think. I have had a little financial set back so I still have a little time to deside for sure.

Also I will mostly be playing with my 13 y/o and maybe by 14 y/o. I have started thinking that maybe by boy should go with a faction that is easy to play and I could go with something a little harder just to even things out between us. Any ideas for two factions to pit against each other like that? I don't think he will go for Guild though.

  10. I am confused about something. I was looking through the PullMyFinger guide on gathering supplies for Malifaux. It has a list of 1-6 things that you will need. Number 5 says

    Quote

[Optional] 5. Faction Arsenal Deck. Arsenal decks contain the 2E cards for each faction's first wave of models. Optional, but a lot more convenient than flipping through the big book and great for keeping track of individual models.

What is the Arsenal Deck for? Does the crew boxes not come with all the unit cards that you need? Why would I have to flip through a book or buy one of these Faction Arsenal Decks

You might be able to buy the starter set decks and tapes off of someone else inexpensively. The good thing about that set was the minis were useful even to experienced players, so there's players who bought it who already had decks and tapes. One of our local players bought it for the minis and was even converted to using the flexible tapes instead of a ruler because movement in a curved line IS legal in Malifaux and the flexible tapes better showed the possibilities of that. He has used a walk action to walk a 50mm base mini around a mini of mine that he was attacking, then using the base in its new location to block an incoming aura which might have saved my mini. It was smart, and very annoying. :P

Our local game store only had a shelf or two of Malifaux although we had players every week. They just liked to special order everything in the months when FLGS promos were running, so boxes came in but were very quickly sold. (Wyrd has promos some months where if you spend $60 in an FLGS on Wyrd product, and you email Wyrd a photo proof of purchase with itemized receipt and/or photos of boxes, they will mail you a limited edition figure at the end of the following month. The next one is probably September, but not certain yet, and certainly not August. Even if it's a figure that's not for your faction, it's a good idea; there's a healthy second-hand market in trading limited edition figures you can't use for ones you can.)

If you are on Facebook, there's a very large group called A Wyrd Place, with more than a few members who are also playing Malifaux with their families and have had lots of good info on not curbstomping younger opponents you have to live with while playing Neverborn. ;)

Thanks for all the info. That sounds like a cool move from Wyrd with the limited edition figures.

    I couldn't find a Facebook group called A Wyrd Place. I only found a Google+ group.

I can not recommend Lilith enough. She's fairly easy to learn, but a lot of strategy behind it. For example, one her crews mechanics is the ability to push, and I quickly learned how powerful it can be. Plus, she can create a forest which helps give protection against ranged crews (the bane of the Neverborn) and can be used to control the board (I can't tell you how many times I've cut off a model or two from the rest of the Crew by dropping a forest in between regular terrain).

Plus, it comes with Terror Tots which are amazing Scheme Writers.

I have been eyeballing Lilith for sure. And after your description she sounds really fun.  She is definitely one I am strongly considering. Thank you!

  13. Thanks for all the ideas guys. I really appreciate it. I'm really thinking it over.

As fo terrain, I didn't mean to indicate that I was opposed to some homemade terrain. I just meant that I dont want to resort to cereal bowls, Tupperware, and Dixi cups. Heck I have some Heroscape terrain that I might be able to find a use for.

My wife and I are just getting into Malifaux. I'm going with Gremlins. I picked up the Somer boxset. The wife has Outcasts with the Vik's boxset.

You are lucky that your wife will play. My wife will not play any of my games.

I would highly recommend the 2 player Starter. It will have have two "crews" lead by Henchmen, the fate decks, and "walk thru" rule book. All the models are Mercenaries so will be usable once you decide which factions you want to collect. It is a really good way to get into the game, particularly if you are trying to suss things out yourself. One of the included factions is Neverborn the other is Guild and they are fairly well balanced against each other. The models are also quite a bit easier to put together than the standard crew boxes. I would also add a download of the mini rule book (its free on drivethrurpg). I wouldn't recommend jumping in with a crew box or two until later as not all crew boxes are created equal (Gremlins in particular tend toward a higher cost of entry, especially Som'er).

After that if you really want to come down to the Bayou for some barbecue and moonshine we'd be happy to have you.

Thanks for the advice. I know that it is good advice to go with the starter set because of everything that you mentioned. It's just that I do not like any of the miniatures in it. It is the option that I will most likely go with but it's a shame that I have to spend that much money without getting any minis that interest me.

On another note the cost of terrain that I will need is concerning me. I first heard of Malifaux as a miniatures game that was fairly inexpensive to get into but it is starting to look like the terrain requirements could make it expensive. Any ideas to keep those cost down? Without using common household items?

  15. Well I have been following the advice and looking through the Malifaux website factions. Oh my, what a tough choice. I need two factions to start with, one for me and one for my son. How to decide? Hillbilly gremlins? Heck yeah!  Creepy children and monsters? Oh yeah! Flaming skull death marshals, undead zombies. I want them all. Unfortunately I can’t afford them all. I do not yet know what faction my boy will go with but I have narrowed it down to three. I really think I like the Neverborn best. Followed by Gremlins then the Guild. Can you guys suggest a good box to start with for each of those three?

Also If you could suggest a $50 Malifaux item from GenCon for a new player like me, what would you suggest? I know someone who is going.

  16. Thanks guys. That sounds encouraging. I was thinking of just picking out a couple of box sets. One for me and one for my boy to get started. Is that a good way to get started and learn the game? I like the idea of the starter box set because it comes with two decks of cards and two crews, but I am not crazy about the crews that it contains.

  17. Hello all.

I have been looking at, and reading about Malifaux for a little while now. I love everything that I am seeing. I want to get into it but I have a very small gaming budget. I am worried that as long as Malifaux has been out that I will start it and then the line will end. It doesn't help my worries when I checked both of my FLGS and neither of them stock it. Is Malifaux still going strong? Do you guys see it being around for a good long while?

    Thanks!
