  1. I;m making an effort to try models I haven't played and different crew constructions.  Yesterday I took a Sniper for the first time, and he was darn good until Nino Ortega killed him in a sniper duel.  To add insult to injury, my Sniper was the target of Nino's Vendetta.  Here was my crew in that game, a 35 pt Henchmen fight:

    Sensei Yu w/Wandering River Style

    Mr. Graves w/Smoke Grenades

    Katanaka Sniper

    High River Monk

    2x Tokarage

Had never played the Sniper pr the Monk before.  I need to try the various oni and see how they play and interact in a crew.  I'm trying to get away from "crutch" models like Izamu or Tengu.

  2. I've been trying out different crews, proxying the models I don't have and using cards out of the rulebooks. I've been limiting what I choose to what comes in the crew box. Now, according to the Wyrd webstore there is an upgrade called "Hair Trigger" in the crew box, but I can't find a copy of it in the rulebooks. Wargame Vault has it, but I really don't want to spend fifty cents on a card I may never use. So, can somebody help an hermano out and tell me where I can find this card?

  3. How many Masters did you go through before you said "Yep, this is the one!"?  When I first started getting interested in Malifaux, I was very high on McMorning.  I liked his crew, I liked the models, and the ability to manipulate Poison looked to be fun.  But...the first crew I got (as a birthday present) was Yan Lo, due to my love of "Big Trouble in Little China". Yan Lo is still my main Master, both in 10T and Ressurs, but I've been trying other Masters from different factions to see who I like playing.  There were some that, when I read their cards, got a "meh" reaction.  After playing them, however, I can see their appeal.

As a note.  There is no double walks.  It’s 2 separate walk actions.  So you can take one single walk action and walk right pass a models engagment.    But if your single walk ends in a models engagement and you walk again, you have to declare that you was leaving engagment and provoke a disengagement strike.

    Thanks for that clarification.

  5. Tried my first Spirit crew with Yan Lo.  Strategy was Squatters' Rights, and my schemes were Deliver Message and Breakthrough.  Here's the list:

Yan Lo w/ Awakening, Brutal Khakkhara, Wronged Spirits

    Datsue Ba w/ Spirit Whispers

Chiaki w/  Pull of the Grave

    Soul Porter

    2x Goryo

    3x Onryo

I was going against a Lilith led Neverborn crew built for speed (3 Terror Tots, 2 Bloodwretches, Lilith w/ On Wings of Darkness).  Tight game all the way, at the top of turn 5 Neverborn were up 3 VP-1 VP.  Then I took my brain out and lost 6-4.  Lilith attacked Datsue Ba but failed to kill her, and then I chose to attack back rather than Deliver Message her.  A Goryo attacked a Bloodwretch rather than discarding the scheme counter the Neverborn had just laid.  Those two decisions lost me the game.  I would have gotten the 2 VP from Distract, and denied her 1 VP..  The math says I would have won 6-5.

    AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!

The crew did really well and I plan to use it again,  So what's the moral of the story, kiddies?  REMEMBER YOUR SCHEMES!

Are you aware of Wave 5 master-specific upgrades? Playing Yan Lo without them doesn't make much sense, he was one of the worst masters in the game back then. Wave 5 brought him new Ascendant upgrade which grants him Casting Expert and great Ca:ToS-Melee: attack which targets Wp (Lilith's weak point) and two regular upgrades, one of which lets him use two (0) and take Lightning Dance as a (0).

Yeah, I've been taking Awakening and Follow Their Footsteps, That 4 or 5 Lightning Dance can be fun.

  7. I started actually playing in the past few weeks, and so far I am a whopping 0-5.  My best friend and I play each other (no other players in our area), so each game has been Lilith vs a Yan Lo TT crew.  We proxy models we don't have to get a feel for what works and what doesn't.  Anyway, I know that some of my losses were due to either stoopid mistakes, ie. leaving Yan Lo open to Lilith and forgetting to stone for damage reduction, or totally screwing the pooch on my schemes.  But I'm curious about using Yan Lo as a Ressur.  What are everyone's thoughts on this?

  8. There are several models whose rules state they cannot be hired but must be summoned, the Ressur Mindless Zombie for example. They still have an SS cost, so do you pay the points when you're constructing your crew so you can summon them once the game begins?

What about other summonings? Do you always have to pay the SS cost of models you plan to summon, or are models summoned in a random way essentially free?

Question for the original poster: what kind of player are you? Are you likely to be a competitive tournament player, or more of a casual play-with-your-buddies sort of player?

I am very definitely a casual player. The tournament scene isn't for me...I really just like playing with friends and having a good time.

Alternatively, start with the starter box - all the models in there are Mercenary, so you can effectively use them with any crew or faction once you've got your head around the game.

That's what I'm thinking, because the Guild models would work with McMourning's "hospital of horror" theme really well. Plus you get Fate Decks, tapemeasures...a lot for your money.

  10. New to Malifaux but not to table top gaming, and I must say I am having a heckuva time deciding what faction to play.  Neverborn are off the table because that's what my room mate and best friend wants to play, and I don't do "goofy" factions so no Gremlins (nope, never played greenskins in 40K or WHFB ;)).  All the other factions are appealing in their own way, so I am in a bit of a quandry as to what to play.  The least appealing are the Arcanists, but all the rest are definitely in the running.  Would any experienced players be willing to share why they chose their faction and any tips they can give a new player.  Thanks!

  11. Okay, the queries continue, and I apologize if I seem slow on the uptake, but what about something like Rasputin's "Sub Zero" ability, where it's Df with a Tome...how does this work? And if there's a page in the rules where all this is explained, let me know and I can leave everyone alone about it.

  12. Most of the rules are pretty straightforward, but there's one thing I'm having trouble wrapping my head around. Here's my example: Lilith's "Wicked Vines" attack action is Ca 6 with a Mask, and the TN is 12, also with a Mask. Does that mean she needs to flip or add a Mask wth a soulstone for the attack to work?

  13. Hello all. Just got done reading the core rules, so now I'm faced with the hard decision of which faction to play. I'm leaning hard toward the Neverborn; they are included in the starter set, and I also really like the theme and models. Second in line would be the Resurrectionists. The game looks fun, fairly simple to learn but with a lot of depth. Maybe we'll meet across the tabletop and see who fate smiles upon!
