It looks like standard plastic coated garden wire wrapped around dowels stuck in a base.

That's absolutely correct. After the first photo I gave it a very light brush with some plaster to give the wire a less smooth appearance, next time I might do this a bit more.

    Some WIP for now:

It's actually almost finished, just need to create the swamp base. Needto make some more tufts for that, i'll post a pic as soon as it's finished.

  3. Hi all,

I've been mostly painting and to some extend playing gremlins the last couple of months. Currently I'm working on a bayou board and Scenery to go with it. I'd like to show my progress in this thread and hope to get some extra motivation to finish this plan. It is quite a lot of work but so far very has been rewarding.

For the board the plan is to make it completely flat and in this way be able to create a different table every time you play it with the individual scenery pieces.

Some scenery I have made so far:

    Moonshine Still (before and after)

    A bayou tree:

    Some hazardous terrain:

The board I made out of 2 pieces of 3"x1.5" MDF boards with a frame around it. It is now primered I will show some pics soon. Some ideas for more scenery I have are a watertower, some bayou cabins and maybe an exploded moonshine still. I will make some forest pieces in the same way I made the tree.

Hope you'll like it and I will be updating soon (I hope)

  4. Thanks Rikk. I always just mix up paints as I go for each mini individually so it's quite hard to formulate an exact recipe. I use almost only Vallejo. The base is a very dark mixture of Beasty Brown, Pale Flesh and black. I add more Pale Flesh for every other layer. For the Sow I used about 5 or 6 layers.

Up next will be Som'er and Gluttony. After them the Wong Box, Pigapult and some more Piglets should be next.

  5. For the tree I used 2 sizes of wire (about 1mm and 0,5mm. The thicker ones you twist in the centre untill you are satisfied with the main trunk thickness. I guess I used about 12 for this. Make sure to leave enough length untwisted for the roots at the bottom and branches at the top. You will want these to be rather longer than too short and clip these later on.

For the branches at the top you take 2 or 3 of the main wires and twist these into seperate bundles. At this point you can decide leaving out sidebranches where you want them. Clip these to proper length after modeling them into shape.

The thinner wire wire I added where I felt they looked natural. These are easily inserted into the twisted bundles.

The roots you bend in shape and clip these to form an even base.

I heated the roots over a flame and gently presses these into a 50mm base. After cooling down the tree was fixed to the base, no extra gluing was required.

Now you make sure your tree has the shape you want

I used a thick layer woodfiller to create the bark. By applying this with a brush (about 1cm) with thick bristles you instantly can create the lines you need to give the bark it's distinctive look. You may want to apply the woodfiller a second time to achieve the best result. Make sure to make the trunk and branches look like they are solid, covering up the twisted bundles of wire.

After drying it's time to paint and base the tree how you like.

Islandic moss is an easy way to create foliage. You jusy glue this on.

It's a very cheap and fast way to create a good looking tree. This one took me I guess less then 2 hours in total.

  6. English is bakingsoda or sodiumbicarbonate. When I use it I mix it with pva and white paint in equal amounts. The white paint keeps it from turning yellow over time. Make sure to use the pure baking soda. I made the mistake of using cleaning soda once (with additives). This resulted in a watery unusable porage.

Have a look at my tormented little friends, I based with baking soda snow:

  7. It has been a very productive month: Lenny 9pts, Merris 6pts, Slop Hauler 5pts, Skeeter 2pts, Bayou Gremlin 3pts and 3 piglets 4 pts each. This gets my May total on 37, counting as 30 pts for masterlevel.

June will be a bit more of a challenge so I picked some high cost models to get some "easy" 30 pts. Will propably finish the sow next weekend and will then lay the paint and brushes aside and dive into a huge pile of study material I need to master before end of June.

    heres what's planned for June:

The Sow is a surprisingly good fit, just some minor filling. Gluttony on the other hand looks like the two halves of his body where designed by different persons (especially his legs), he will need major greenstuffing. Som'er is in the middle of those two when it comes to assembly but he has allready been filled :)
