So you’re going to ignore the inconvenient facts like:

    * Model sizes are 30mm, 40mm, and 50mm.  None of those are even multiples of an inch, so won’t fit in an “inch based” grid.

    * Movement and measurement on grids always ends up with messy rules for diagonal measuring, or “free” distance.

Whistling about thirty years of table top wargaming....

At least you weren’t complaining about pre-measuring or not pre-measuring.

Sorry I offended you with my opinions...not! 🙄

Something else to try would be the rule of intent.

When placing stuff, say whether it is within range or not.

This can save a lot of arguments if you're clear from the moment of placing.

Yeah, I've tried that. Works sometimes but sometimes people are real sticklers about 1/16in. I think I'm going to try the "squares within squares" thing with my friends. Malifaux isn't a computer game, so I can just change it however I want so long as I'm only playing with friends. We might tape like paper squares on the bottom of the bases or something to make it more clear.

In order to eliminate ambiguity, you need to have one grid space = one model base.

I don't agree with this piece because I know Pathfinder has characters that take up more than one space and it works just fine, but I respect the desire for more flexibility.

The finest grid I can see being tolerable is a "squares within squares" system where dark lines outline a 1in square and then lighter lines outline four 1/4in squares within the dark-lined square. This allows a player to easily measure in inches but still gives enough flexibility to place a model with 1/4in precision.

Bases are troublesome though (they're circular not square), so it might be too late at this point to even consider something like switching, so I guess it is what it is. Just my feedback

  3. I don't like the measuring system in Malifaux. There, I said it. I like Malifaux, but when it comes to measuring distances in a competitive experience, I don't like it.

In my opinion, measuring takes practice depending on how precise your gaming group wants people to be with measurements (sometimes just a 1/16in can be the difference between a model being in range and not in range or engaged or not). And, depending on your gaming group, a measurement discrepancy can lead to an argument or maybe a 5-10 minute discussion just to resolve and move forward. I understand that measuring systems allow a lot of flexibility compared to grid based systems. You can place your models anywhere! But...you know, you could just use a smaller grid to accomplish close enough to the same thing...with a lot less headache in my opinion.

But this is just my opinion. Maybe lots of people just don't like grid-based systems compared to me.

  4. I'd like to see 2v2, 2v1, and types like that supported more in Malifaux.

Right now, Malifaux is pretty much just officially supported as a 1v1 game. You can use some unofficial rules to make the other modes work though. Like maybe half soulstones to each player, players on the same team have to hire from the same faction, etc. Would like to see official support though because sometimes you and your buddies are more than just two people.

I'd also like to see upgrades become more "reactionary" purchases. What I mean by this is that I'd like to see the choosing upgrades step moved to take place after both crews are hired and revealed. This allows people to make some small modifications to their crews to help balance out what they're fighting against instead of it being a "well crap, I'm against X and I didn't take Y. That sucks"

@TheMechE Factions certainly have some general themes but questions like that won't necessarily give you a good insight in that. If you want to know what distinguishes factions, I'm sure people will fill you in on that. As a primarily Ten Thunders player for example...

Ten Thunders have somewhat weaker and less spectacular masters who make up for it by having a stellar hires, as shown by just about every TT master being on the lower end of the tier list in their other factions. They gravitate towards more elite crews and tend to compose their crew out of faction-wide staples moreso than master-bound combos or synergies. Their playstyle is distinguished by support and favours consistency over luck. This is mostly shown through ample positioning, nifty conditions, healing and a lot of :+fate flips, and tends to leave them with few and generally more straightforward triggers. If you go into a game with a good grasp of what your units should be able to handle they can generally do just that - no more, no less.

And I'm sure people more familiar with other factions can give you a good insight into their respective fortes.

What do you think of the new Misaki upgrade that lets her place her blast markers 12" away and cheat minus damage flips? You might be able to wipe two or three models in one activation depending on how they clump.

There is pretty much overlap these days.

No faction has every model be more durable than those of others and depending on if you face models that ignore defensive abilities or have high min damage etc durability means different things. Ressers have the models with the highest wound stats for their cost but generally lowish defensive stats and also have squishy models. Flesh constructs or depleted have the most wounds for their cost but there are other durable models like waldgeists or night terrors if the opponent can't ignore their defensive abilities.

Best master is also an odd question. All factions win tournaments. Do you want your masters to do much damage themselves, buff friendlies, debuff enemies, summon or somethig else since masters have such different jobs that question becomes impossible to answer without more info. Same for best actions and abilities, most actions and abilities are also found across multiple factions.

Every faction has some seriously strong henchmen, every faction has some seriously strong minions.

Nurses may have the most powerful control action in the game if you ask me. They are minions in ressers but can also be taken by certain masters in guild and neverborn.

For cheapest and most expensive, Gremlins are the cheapest in the sense that your average Gremlin crew is probably 1-2 models bigger than a similar crew from another faction. Having Bayou Gremlins as the cheapest non-totem significant minion in the game is a big deal, and the most expensive models in the faction are 10 stones rather than the usual 12 or 13. The most expensive is a bit harder. Multiple factions have 13 stone models, but I'd say Ten Thunders is probably one of the more expensive factions. They have some pretty powerful models, but staples tend to cost quite a bit - the Emissary and Sensei Yu are 10 and 9 stones respectively (Yu is 11 with an style upgrade which you should almost certainly take), and there aren't really any cheap spammable models like Bayou Gremlins or Guild Hounds. Not a hard and fast rule but that's generally my thought.

Ludvig got ya on most of the others though. I think saying "best" is one of the reasons it's difficult to answer. Bayou Gremlins, Illuminated, and Nurses are all really good minions for example, but they're all good for totally different reasons so it's difficult to say which is the "best". Same with Masters, although I would say that the top power level is fairly evenly spread. There's no specific official tier list but I imagine if you polled most people, the best masters would be from a variety of factions.

Thanks! Updated my questions. Ressers do have a lot of high health models. Which faction has the highest defense stat and armor etc.? For the master thing, I was thinking some masters are weaker than others but their faction crew makes up for this. Is that not the case? For example, maybe the Gremlin masters would be pound for pound weaker than say a guild master, but they work well in very large crews to make up for that weakness.

  7. Which faction has the most durable models per soulstone?

Which faction has the models with the highest stats per soulstone?

Which faction has the models with the best actions or abilities per soulstone?

Which faction has the strongest masters?

Which faction has the strongest henchmen?

Which faction has the strongest minions?

Which faction is best for cheap models (army of common many)?

Which faction is best for expensive models (army of the elite few)?

Some of these questions might overlap, but I'm just trying to pin down what defines each faction other than pure lore.

So... He can only hire or summon models with terrifying.

...And friendly models without terrifying within :aura12 gains Terifying (All) 9? Doesn't seem like that will happen very often...

I thought that at first too, but it's actually all MINIONS........or models with terrify. Since minions are just a subset of models this makes sense. The wording on the model could use some improvement, but basically, he has a giant hiring pool consisting of all minions. And you can hire higher (or lower I guess) rankings if the models have terrify. Are there any peons with terrify? Lol

Pretty interesting but technically he cannot summon all the models on that list, he can only summon minion or enforcers, no Henchmen.  So no Nothing Beast, no Ama No Zako, and no Paul Crockett.

Yep, good point. Removed those three (Nothing Beast was errata'd to henchman too if anyone is wondering).

  10. So in the Halloween story scenario for Malifaux Chronicles 32, there's a custom summoning master. Here's the list of models that he can summon with his (1) Prey on Fear action. This list doesn't yet include Ripples of Fate (don't own that one yet), but has all the other book models listed. Note the ability's TN equates to a card draw of 4+SS cost of card, so the max SS he could possibly summon would be a 10 SS model on the flip of a red joker unless there's some model or upgrade that can increase your Ca. I listed higher SS cost models here too just in case.

  11. Aaaand there's spoilers in this thread, so don't open it if you don't want to find out. Yep

You had your chance. And now...

So did SkitzMourning's assistant die before broken promises (Sebastian)? He seemed to be absent in the McMourning story while McMourning was...even more off the wall than usual. So far off the wall it'd probably be better just to call him SkitzMourning at this point, speaking to Sebastians that aren't there and all (yes, that was plural).

  12. Everyone seems to be bringing up interesting points here. I'm not sure which way to go.

    1. Once per model per turn could be a restriction based on each individual caster similar to once per turn.

    2. Once per model per turn could also mean that models are tracked independently of the caster and are more tracked based on whom the target was. I don't particularly like option two because what if two people had prompt and someone prompted your unit? Does that mean you can't prompt your unit on your turn since your opponent consumed your prompt opportunity? I don't know how this would ever happen considering prompt only targets friendlies, but it seems strange if it ever came up. hmmmm

At the same time, prompting the same unit twice though may be too strong even if the action is done by a different unit.

  13. Hi everyone,

I made a PDF of all the errata stat cards for duplex printing. Flip along the long edge. 8.5" by 11" letter paper.

I also made a PDF of the upgrades for normal single sided printing (obviously). I hope these are useful for some of you.

Note: Use at your own risk. Although I did check the cards and front and backs appear to match correctly, it is ultimately up to you, the user, to verify before investing in printer paper, etc.

Links below since the files are too large to attach to the forums:

Also, let me know if the quality is okay. I exported these using PowerPoint, and the built-in exporter doesn't have many options for quality control. Not sure if LibreOffice produces better exports or not, haven't tried.

Edit: I uploaded the PowerPoint versions. These might have higher resolution for you guys that want that:

I used LibreOffice Draw to put the cards I wanted in one file, changed page format to landscape and size to the images' native size, put one image per slide, export as PDF (uncheck reduce resolution). Then print with Foxit Reader with multiple pages per sheet (3x3). This gives normal sized cards with A4 paper, you might have to tweak something if you use letter paper.

Thanks, never tried using Foxit Reader. That sounds like a nice easy way to print these things after you center them on the pages using A4 paper.

  15. I was checking also if someone had found an easy way to print these. I'll post a PDF file at a later time for double sided printing if no one mentions a simple way to print these things that I have been missing. Not sure how good it'll be, but I guess we'll see.

    Edit: Uploaded, see this post:

I just use a card binder. I think it's 20 sides, every side stores 18 cards. More then enough room for every available Neverborn Model and Upgrade, some Mercs and 2 scemes& strategy decks :)

    ^

This is what I do too. I find the binder to be one of the best ways to store and transport cards because you can look at many cards at the same time when building crews and stuff. Wouldn't have it any other way.

  17. With all the errata's lately, my stat cards are way outdated, and it's time to print the updated versions.

So my question for you guys is what's the easiest way to do this? Do I need to use windows's snipping tool, put them in a software like powerpoint or something similar, and then resize them in order to print these things at the correct size, or is there an easier way to get this done?

What did you guys end up doing?
