  1. Thanks for the replies!

Well I'd say the list he ran there was probably far too heavy on high cost models. As a result his list is ultra heavy on support models and only really has a single Teddy for fighting the early game. If his summons get picked off before regenerating then he will lose a lot.

On the 'proper tank' side. Illuminated. For 7 stones they are super tanky. Similarly Depleted are great at creating a temporary tarpit. Waldgeists are armour 2 on a 6 stone model with a 4 inch melee range and portable soft cover.

Mobility for the Neverborn shouldnt be compared to Arcanist reactivate shenanigans. Instead consider things like Terror Tots (20 inch movement with the right cards/Lynch) the silurid (move 7 then still able to interact twice) Gupps and similar. Neverborn have several models with lure and the means to exploit it. Vasilia with upgrade can charge a Coryphee into the enemy deployment on first turn.

True, he once played Illuminated and they performed pretty well. Thanks for pointing them out.

I'd don't think that Arcanists movement resolves about reactive but more around pushes and IE. Speaking for myself it just feels like Arcanists can combine so many layers of synergy, that they can pull of some insane tricks without much effort.

At least whenever I watch them across the table, Neverborn move around really well too, but comparing both factions they just feel a bit less "insane" :D

Looking at the lists and first couple of turns, he should have had 10-11 models out at the scoring point of turn 2. How did he not score Reconnotre?

If you were pushign up agressively I'm surprised that his 4 teddies and Lord Chompybits didn't remove several of your advanced models in turn 2

Summoning Teddies and Stiched together is a gamble when facing Ramos and Mech rider, due to magnitism, so it is possible that he should have considered other summons.

Big hitting tanks will have you looking at the Mature Nephlim or the Hooded rider, both of whom I would say are simliar to Howard in effect.

I was basically standing in the middle of the map by turn 2 while he was still in his deployment zone ... since he wanted to summon 3 models on the first turn, he couldn't really move the Dreamer forward and therefore caged himself into the corner.

While Teddies are scary, they become much easier to handle when you have armor and :+fate  flips on def thanks to Ramos. Especially when my own crew is in close range of each other, therefore denying sniping single models out without getting hit back.

Good point about the summoning though. Looking back it would probably have been the better play to save the high cards for melee and just summon stuff like Coppelius or Lilitu.

Mature and Rider he already tried, but imo they just fall into the same category as the others, glascanon.

I don't think I'd call Mature Neph or Hooded Rider a 'tank'. Both are decently mobile beatsticks with the option to pick up Retributions Eye for Ignoring armour but neither is a model you want to be taking hits.

Mature is armour+1 black blood and a low defence, Hooded Rider gets tankier as the game goes on but by his very nature should be avoiding combat till the late game, not tanking hits for the crew. For high cost high damage output 'tanks' the Neverborn only really have Teddy (regen, terrifying 13, impossible to wound but abysmal defence) and Bad Juju (Hard to wound instead of impossible and the option for eternal fiend).

Really Neverborn tanking is best in its mid range minions. Also your friend should consider that Neverborn have a lot of capacity for avoiding getting hit in the first place. We have an abundance of terrifying, manipulative and some perfect camo plus terrain generation and an excellent variety of pushes and placements to engage/disengage on favourable terms.

I have the same thinking about Mature and Rider. Teddy and Juju both drop down pretty fast though once they activated and get hit by something with 4 weak damage (Howard, Markus).

Don't get me wrong, they're awesome. But often just putting one of them into a list feels like it's not enough, especially when there's a train of 3-4 hard hitters is coming around.

One thing I'm (as a non-Neverborn player) not sure of are the various supporting options the faction can run - good point TimH.

Looking at his list, Mr. Tannen, Vasilia and Widow Weaver all can't really contribute much in melee. Would be interesting how many such support models you run in a list and how you make them work.

  2. I'd like to get into the "problem" with a short battle report from last week.

As most week our group met last week to play a few games of Malifaux. I played against an long-time friend of mine who plays Neverborn eclusively and simultaneously is the only Neverborn player in our group, so nobody can give some good advice.

We set up the board with a lot of terrain, standard deployment, with Reconnoiter, Bodyguard, Protect Territory, Vendetta and Power Ritual (I guess, can't really remember for sure tbh).
Thanks to Reconnoiter I chose Ramos  (Shield Upgrade, Arcane Reservoir, Bleeding Edge Tech) and Joss (Open Current, IE), Howard (IE), Mech Rider (IE) and Mobile Toolkit.

He brought Dreamer (Summoning Upgrade, Flight & Draw Upgrade), Teddy (ignore Armor Upgrade), Widow Weaver (Bag), Vasilia, Mr. Tannen and a few Daydreams if I remember correctly.

To make things short, he got a really strong hand and summoned 2 Teddies and 1 Stitched on the first turn followed by another Teddy and two Stitched on the second turn with Dreamer. On the third turn Widow Weaver summoned a Teddy and two more Wicked Dolls on the following turns.

As scary as it sounds and may looked on first sight, it didn't really play out that well for him. I pushed forward very aggressively and restricted him into the table corner he set up, which made it easy for me to score 2 points for Reconnoiter on turn 2 and 3 while refusing him to score. Ramos summoned two times 3 spiders on the first two turns while Mech Rider started summoning Metal Gamins on turn 2.

With Ramos and the Gamins it wasn't much of a problem killing a low-life Teddy early on with Magnetize and another one on turn 4.

The game was pretty much a stand off whith him looked into one of the table quarters while I surrounded him. He set up web markers to make charging even scarier while I positioned my hard hitters to cover each other.

On turn 3 the stand off breaks and we start engaging each other - to make it short, by turn 5 Ramos, Joss and Howard died while I was able to kill three Teddies in total and all his Stitched and Wicked Dolls. By that time he wasn't able to score any points while my Spiders, Gamin and Mech Rider simply won me the game, even with his master still alive but pretty outnumbered.

... and that's basically how every game goes for him. It's not like someone had way better cards (I'd say his hand was a bit better while my flips compensated for it, so imo it was pretty even), but it does always feel like Neverborn are a bit handicapped.

He regularly plays Dreamer, Lilith and Jakob, and tries out a lot of different combinations of miniatures.

As an opponent when looking at his crews it always feels super scary at first sight, but after the first hits are traded it's a lot less frightening.

Since neither me nor someone else in our group can give some good advice, I thought I'd ask here.

Neverborn are often refered as the most mobile faction, but beside some obviously great movement tricksters like Lilith, I can't really agree with that. When he looks across the table at my Arcanists, he always gets a bit jealous what they can do and where they can go.

Another point where he struggles a bit imo, is the lack of a proper tank. Nekima, Candy, Juju and Teddy can all be scary, but more often than not they're busy not dying.

I'm aware there's no simple solution like "play X when this happens and you win", but I thought maybe there are some hidden tricks that I could pass over to him to help him out a bit.

    Would be really appreciated :)

  3. ... "wRong". Not "wong" :P

My main faction is Arcanists for about one year now and since then I collected most minis of the faction.

I probably tried out everyone of them at least a few times, however I have a feeling I became super one-sided recently ...

When it comes to masters I have Marcus, Ramos, Colette, Raspy and Kaeris available and switch between them depending on strategies, schemes and overall mood ;)

Most of the time I mainly play Marcus, Ramos or Raspy though.

However concering the rest of my crews I almost have no or at best minimal variation in it. Looking through all my models, I almost exclusively play these few:

    - Joss

    - Myranda (switching into a Blessed 90% of the time )

    - Cassandra

    - Johan

    - Howard Langston

    - Mechanical Rider (summoning Metal Gamin 99% if the time)

    - December Acolyte

    - Silurid (Marcus)

    I sometimes bring ...

    - totems

    - Captain

    - Angelica

    - Waldgeist (Marcus)

Also, best case scenario I always include 3 Imbued Energies, "worst case" I only have 2 in my lists.

With such a huge pool it feels kinda odd only fielding the same stuff over and over. Since we're playing pretty competitive in our club and I have a pretty good win:loss ratio I don't really have a huge desire switching a lot ... basically "never change a winning team".

To be honest, even though the main intention should be to always play the strategy, it's pretty hefty to throw a fast Howard Langston and a God's Domaining, Debuffing, fast Marcus at my opponent, killing key models early.

... or to just summon 4 minions worth 16 points each round with Ramos and Mech Rider in schemes where minions matter.

... or just laugh at my opponent when marker-heavy schemes are announced and I field both Mech Rider and 2 Silurids, while Marcus gets after his scheme runners and hammers them down.

... or play Colette, which basically is everything of the above combined, just with a fancy hat :D

I play really agressive most of the time and these models really support such a playstyle. So far whenever I fielded stuff like Razorspine Rattler, Fire Gamin, Silent Ones or whatever else the faction holds it always felt inferior for my personal playstyle.

I'd really like to include them everytime I build a list, just because I like their style, but in the end they remain in my storage boxes since quite a while now.

Therefore I'd be really interested if I'm the only one here who has this kind of "one-sided" experience after you've played a faction more extensive. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to moan, it's just something I'm interested in.

Maybe I'm just a typical lamer that can't win a game without running Mech Rider and 3 IE. Maybe all I can do is throw 10+SS cost models at my opponent and call it "my playstyle" ... tbh: I don't know

  4. You two are not really helpful for my wallet :D

Okay you need to change the night terrors, shikomes and autopsies from maybe to hell yes. They are absolutely amazing. I would write you a longer reasoning why. But this mobile thing is horrible to write with.

    benStillerDoIt.jpg

... ok ... would be great though if you may find some time. At least on paper I have no idea why they are "amazing" :D

Doxies are pretty good as well, and Seamus and Molly can summon them.

Sure, but both can summon Belles too. In which cases do you prefer getting a Doxie?

  5. I'm currently considering getting into the Resser faction and therefore searched where I could get most miniatures from (I'm addicted to tin models tbh, no chance for plastic, which makes collecting them a bit more of a challenge ;))

So I found most things I'd like to have, but I'm not sure I want everything from that list from a competitive point of sight.

Since we have no Resser player in our area, I came here to ask :)

My basic thinking behind my list is to get all available (metal) masters (McMourning, Kirai, Seamus, Nico and Molly) and all models I'll ever need for a game. Since we're playing pretty competitively in our area, I'd like to avoid stuff I probably will never use.

    Here's my "maybe" list:

    Jaakuna Ubume

    Guild Autopsy

    Shikome

    Night Terrors

    Dead Rider

    Dead Doxy

    Carrion Effigy

    2nd Rogue Necromancy

Since I'm also looking for Jack Daw in the Outcast faction, I'll probably get Jaakuna anyway, but it would be interesting to know if she sees use within the Resser faction.

Guild Autopsies I heard can be summoned, but I don't know if that's great or not. On paper they look kinda weak compared with the other 5SS minions Resser offer (looking at you Necropunks and Belles! :D )

Shikome, Night Terrors and Dead Doxies feel a bit odd, I don't really know where in which cases I want to include them. Being ugly as hell doesn't really help Shikome out tbh :D

Carrion Effigy: I'm mainly playing Arcanists and almost never field the Arcane Effigy there. Carrion feels inferior actually, so I'm not sure I'll ever play it at all.

The Dead Rider looks great on first sight, but so far all Riders (except Mech for obv reasons) I faced where kinda weak. Dead Rider sounds cool as a melee beater, but since he has almost no defence on the first two turns, he can't really get there imo.

Second Rogue Necromancy I'm also not sure I'll need, will I continuously summon more than 1? Or even better: will I ever want to field two of them? :D

Anything else I may have missed and probably will never play?

Would be great if someone could help me out, thanks a lot :)

  6. Myy question may be dumb, so please bear with me ...

There are two new card decks released. One includes a lot of new upgrades that are also allowed in tournament play. The other one includes the cards for the Shifting Loyalities Story Encounters and older cards that got FAQ'd.

So ... where will be the cards for the new models like the Crossroad Seven be included?

Also, is there a chance to get the cards from the starter box too (beside buying the starter box obv)?

I guess the new cards will be included in the Shifting Loyalities box, but would be great if there would be some clarification.

    Thanks a lot, cheers

  7. Updated my opening post - pump!

In case you have a few of these miniatures among my list just let me know. As mentioned I don't care much about painting condition as long as they are complete and in nice shape.

I'd prefer bigger trades than small ones, mainly due to postal costs. Either way though, just send me a PM if you're interested in selling me some stuff ;)

  8. Agree on the Silent Ones, sometimes 1, few times 2.

Acolytes though I often field 2 and basically always at least 1 (with basically any master) since they're just really powerful, always depending on the schemes for sure. I never played 3 or more however since while they're awesome at range, they kinda suck when getting stuck in melee. Therefore I prefer a good mix of them with melees and support.

  9. I'm still looking to expand my collection and therefore try to get the last missing old metal sculpts out of the Resser and Outcast faction:

    1 Miss Pack
    1 Copycat Killer
    1 Dead Rider
    1 Jaakuna Ubume
    2 Canine Remains (these ones)
    2 Dead Doxy
    3 Guild Autopsies
    4 Seishin

    3 Ronin

I don't care about their condition as long as they are complete and undamaged. Painting, good or bad, will get stripped of anyway. However, the better the condition the better I pay, since I have less work ;)

Is you have some of these, just send me a PM and let me know. I'm sure we can figure something out :)
I'm from Austria but have already traded, sold and bought worldwide, so it's not much of a deal where you are from ;)

So if you're interested, please send a PM - chances are I won't see your reply here since I'm not that often checking this thread.
To PM's however I usually answer within a day max.

    Thanks, cheers! :)

  10. While gathering all the miniatures for my Arcanists I bought a few lots, and now have quite some miniatures twice.
I'd love to trade them for some other metal miniatures and would prefer mainly Ressers and Outcasts. In case you'r trade offer would be bigger than mine, I can pay for the rest in cash :)

So if you're interested in getting some miniatures from that list, just send me a PM and let me know ;)

All minis are either unassembled & unpainted or they got the paint stripped off. For more info just ask.

    1 Marcus (normal version)

    1 Ramos (alternate version)

    1 Ramos Avatar

    1 Colette

2 Colette Avatars (I used one of them for my normal Colette)

9 Steam Arachnids (the multi-part ones)

    2 Malifaux Raptors

    Cheers

  11. Title pretty much speaks for himself ;)

I'm still looking for a Silent One and Snow Storm. Silent One I would also take multiples.

I don't care much about the condition as long as they're complete. The better the condition, the better I'd pay :)

So if you have either a Silent One or Snow Storm for sale/trade, just let me know and send me a PM ;)

    Cheers!

/edit - finally got a Silent One, still looking for a Snow Storm though - let me know if you have one ;)

  12. One thing that always comes to my mind when reading threads like this are some sort of self fulfilling paradigma.

To explain: somebody states that Mech Rider is too strong and an auto include. Others read this and put it into their lists without considering the other options. Getting good results from this, they dismiss the rest without ever considering it. Their opponents read this too and now complain that Mech Rider is the sole reason they're loosing, not considering the other stuff happening. Aaaand so it all beginns again ;)

Speaking for myself, I'm a bit in the middle. Yes, I love picking the "autoincludes", but just as much love to try out the other stuff to get a better picture what works for myself and what not.

  13. kaeris can actually help your crew heal from the burning. you just have to increase the burning on them if she has shot them after setting them on fire.

Haven't played that matchup myself so far, but right now I have no idea how this would work out.

Kaeris, especially with healing upgrade, loves to set stuff into fire, just much as Sonnia does.

Anybody played such a game yet and would share his/her experience?

  14. Desolation Engine: Walk twice (10") to get in the best position, use Consume "Sacrifice any number of friendly models within 3".", that's right, just within, no pulse or anything so you can include the DE itself.

You are an evil person ...

    ... in a good way :D

  15. Levi only has Wp 7, so it's not that hard depending on your upgrades.

Cast Feral on him with a 13 to cheat in to ensure it goes through (Red Joker aside), then Domesticate and it should be easy getting that Alpha on him.

Also, if you don't have a 13 to cheat in you can always use Howl to lower his Wp to 5 (before casting Feral for sure) ;)

  16. Alpha on Leveticus is funny. You can kill him so easily channeling.

I had to ask in the rules section first, but wow, he's even better than I though.

Alpha Levi, use Channel & Rebirth to kill his own Mech Rider (e.g.), draw two cards, Channel and shoot twice at a Hollow Waif (probably killing it), then perform a walk action and Channel again, killing Levi.

    BEST. ALPHA. EVER.
