  1. I'm too new to know as well, however, i would say I like the way I'm learning the game better?

instead of starting immediately with the schemes and strategies, we started with just a straight up 20ss bash? so both me and my opponent could learn how to do most of the mechanics, then I played like a 30ish? I think SS game vs another player and we just did similiar but with more models (obviously). Tonight I had like my third game and we just did Line in the Sand.

I played the same crew, pretty much overall, with Somer just so I could get to understand them all, and start figuring out their interactions.

I'm probably slower than most people but you might give it a go, do something simple first then try a bit more then add the Schemes/strategies in.

And yeah check out that site, it's really awesome lot of tactics etc on it!

    Good luck!!

  2. Had a situation tonight which confused me and an opponent regarding a Bayou Gremlin's Whoops, Ricochet trigger going off. I read that models can see in any direction at any time. The Gremlin in question was within LOS to 3 friendly models, depending on how you say he was facing. Obviously he's shooting a particular direction - is that what you use to determine what model is in LOS for the Whoops, Ricochet? Or are any of the three models fair game? (Two were beside him, one a little above, one a little below, with Somer quite far above him, call it North, but still within range.)

For purposes of our intro game I thought the most logical course was for Somer to be the friendly target, as he was in the direction I'd been trying ot get the Gremlin to fire. But I wanted to see how it is supposed to actually play out for future reference.

Thanks in advance for any help!

  3. had my second game tonight against Freikorps - wow Von Schill... just ouch lol

Was an awesome game though! I learned a lot, and got a better sense of the interactions with the upgrades etc too. I'm still getting used to what model can do what and so forth.

I definitely want to put together my piglets - I already have hog whisperer, which I think I forgot to mention above.

I wasn't as impressed with slophauler, but I hadn't realized during the game he could add a healing flip to gremlins as well as pigs - I was thinking just pigs =/ Reading comprehension for the win! lol

I agree, in the USA at least, we don't have a suitable feminine equivalent to guys or dudes.

Tbh where I grew up, in the pacific nw, we used "guy" for girl or boy (or woman or man). Especially in the phrase "you guys" which the south loves to use in its y'all version.

Interesting. It's the other way around here. "Frau" meaning woman is used way more often than "Mädchen" meaning girl. Might actually be about length or something.

I suspect you'd be right, Americans do tend to shorten a lot of things to a single syllable as well, and 'girl' just ends up easier to speak, 'woman' seems to feel too formal. When I'm talking about my friends it's always "girls".

At any rate I could go on and on about language (<3 linguistics) but I don't have any hard proof to offer.

Instead of getting hung up in this girl vs. woman concept and boy vs man etc - why don't we just use "gamer"? No more qualifying it with girl - or boy - or anything. Because that's what I find the most true, we're all gamers here and we all would like to be treated the same.

  5. I've been thinking about this for a bit. Figured I'd chime in with my two cents, maybe it'll help someone.

I've been a gamer for years, starting with D&D, MTG, moving into MMOs when they first came out - yes first, I remember Meridian 59, text based MUDs and UO all fondly. So, when I say the normal joke was the oft quoted GIRL = Guy In Real Life, you have maybe a good idea where I'm coming from. Leaving aside most of the problems caused by anonymity on the internet issues (for those younger, remember we only used to have text to base our idea of what a person 'was' on, no voice chats, for instance), I've always felt like I'm treated as a girl "first" generally, and a gamer second.

That really annoyed me. As I've gotten older, and raised gamers of my own, I've gotten a tougher skin. And a much better, "Oh really? Is *that* what you think?" stare at offending parties  (I'd like to say whilst pwning their tails but I'm not that good). Also, more and more, I'm not alone, either online, or in wargaming circles.

I do think that generally women in gaming tend towards more story driven content, and less competition - but that's both my opinion, and just a very generic generalization. I know women who're more competitive than me, than men. I'm mentioning this mostly because I see this as one of the major factors that is drawing more women to games like Malifaux. There are plenty of other skirmish style games but I don't see the same female presence in them. I think Malifaux is really good at appealing to a wider audience, so other companies honestly should take note of it.

Back on topic a bit more, I have seen discrimination personally. I've been accosted by people who, frankly, were trying to be intimidating or perhaps simply couldn't conceive of a gamer in the shape of a girl. I don't know.

My point is, if you are concerned about this issue at all, and you're a gamer - of any ilk - do NOT let it deter you, get help, bring friends, talk to store owners, whatever it takes to excercise your gaming freedom. If you're a parent, teach your children gaming and etiquette, regardless of gender. If you're a girl, encourage your friends to join you! It's really only this last year of my life I've felt comfortable enough with myself to start talking about my hobby to my friends. And what's surprising? The number of them who understood. The two or three people I spent an hour after church talking about Dragoncon and other geeky stuffs. I never would have known if I hadn't been more open about my hobby.

This is the sort of positive support anyone can do. Obviously, yes, report harrassment of any sort, stand up for others. Education is a powerful  thing.

  6. Very nice!!

are you smashing the flagstones with a rock to get rocky texture? (really works, just in case it's not obvious, plus it is a lot of fun :P)

Imo - I'd have some of the channels full, some not? but I dunno, I just think it might be more interesting.

Going to be a lovely board!

  7. My first (and only atm) Master is Somer, I'm looking at the following for my crew for 35ss:

    Somer + Family Tree - 2ss

    Skeeter (totem) - 2ss

    Bayou Gremlin X4 - 12 SS

    Lenny w/ Dirty Cheater - 10ss

    Slop Hauler - 5ss

Models I have (ready to play): Hog Whisperer, Wild Boars (3), Sammy LaCroix, Whiskey Golem, 4 more Bayou Gremlins

Models I have (still in box): Brewmaster box (intend to use with Whiskey golem prolly), piglets, pigapult, gracie, War Wabbit

I'm trying to keep my list simple til I am more comfortable with everyone's abilities and how Gremlins work ingame etc. The Bayou Gremlins are fun but I notice their damage wasn't very good unless I really focus fired - or maybe I should have been taking potshots at the chaff first.

Anyway still figuring this out, comments appreciated =D

  8. Yeah I finally got another Malifaux book with more of the backstory and anyway! I was soooo wanting to put a train in lol but I don't have one :( A future project though! Plus the whole steampunky + train thing = drool! :)

  9. Thanks for the help all btw

I went a little more old school with teh portal look - I'd have liked it to be round but that was beyond me so I went more traditional stone

Trying to work with the gallery here, so here's a couple WIP shots

  10. nice!!

water effects eh I've used realistic water (woodland scenics brand) it works well, lasts a long time (lots in the bottle) so it's not too bad for the cost. I've heard of some people using two part resin - but I'm not sure what brand. And also using a kind of polyurethane used in varnishing other items - but again, sorry, not sure :( I would say though, don't use floral water!! I tried that and it sucks :( at least my experience with it does...

sorry not really all that helpful =/ good luck!

This is a small piece I made for my swamp terrain, not a lot of buildings but you can see a few things might could help you. The bridge is sprues, carved and painted to look like wood, the small posts are from dowels, cut and painted to look more unfinished, like logs. A lot of the greenery is moss of various types, treated with 50/50 water/PVA to both keep them in place and to protect them. The medium green bushes are just floral wire, dipped in glue, dipped in flock. The tree is actually a bought model one.

^^ has my swamp board in the first  post, a display board I made for my Gremlins, has a ot of the same ideas as wolpertinger's with the shacks etc.

I used a crimper on some plasticard to get teh corrugated look, a lot of matchsticks, popsicle sticks and paperclips. With a little greenstuff in places to help me make "beer" cans.
