  1. I use a very similar technique, with on exception; I have built a brick stamp with an old brush. Pull all the bristles out of the brush, then with a pair of long nose pliars shape the metal ferrule into a rectangular shape. As an optional you can lightly sharpen the metal edges so that it cuts more into the foam. Then it's just a case of pressing the stamp into the foam.

I used this technique in my roudn two Iron Painter entry:

  3. Those crystals look awesome! As fellow snow terrain maker it's great to see a variation to the usual field of blue ice. I might have to steal adapt the idea myself.

How did you build/create the base of your snow board?

On a side note, I like the idea of how you made a foldable table but the structural supports become an area for cards. Very neat idea.

  4. Ha ha, I was never rich enough to buy into WarHammer when I was younger although I do still have my copy of White Dwarf that came with the box set of Space Marine (the now discontinued Epic Warhammer 40k stuff).

I use paper terrain glued to cardboard boxes (Huggies nappies boxes as they are in plentiful supply in our house). It can be folded flat but has a lot more strength.

  5. Hello all, my friend an I have been playing some story encounters lately, and we played the Jail Break encounter for the first time last night and we came up against a question. Does the Leader while imprisoned in the Jail get an activation, and can they be targeted by actions that don't require LoS?

We played it that they didn't activate and couldn't be targeted while imprisoned, but this seemed very unfair that the attacking player lost a big advantage not being able to utilise their master.

    Thoughts?

  6. Thanks Requirement.

    Some more work in progress:

Firstly a brief experiment into trees. I personally don't like the look of conifers covered in snow, as it just looks so happy and Northern Hemisphere Christmas to me. Here on the Southern hemisphere (aka the real top half of the planet), our snowy trees look more like this

So I decided to try the same technique for my board.

The branch is from a Magnolia tree (that grows in my front yard; modelling paste is then applied to the branches and then flocked with Bicarb.

(I really should glue Snow's arms back on and give her a coat of paint.)

  7. So after a 'little' break with the festive season, I decided to make a start on my snow themed modular board. I started to experiment with the basic empty terrain panels. Instead of just a flat expanse of white snow, I wanted to achieve slight undulating gound with the occasional rock outcrop. The down side to this is it will make placing scatter terrain more difficult.

So here are the results so far, a basic rise and a small exposed rock:

For the snow covering I decided to try out a new product, this was the Mont Marte Modelling Paste. It cost roughly AU$8.50 for 500ml. This was then applied relatively thick with a plastic spoon.

    img_6604.jpg?w=225

Then a liberal coating of Bicarb Soda was applied to give the snow a powdery finish.

Lastly when the piece was dried, the whole board was sprayed with a 1:6 mix of PVA:water to seal the bicarb in. The bicarb did foam up in contact with the water but when dried gave a nice tough coating.

    Final thoughts:

The PVA mix did dull down the sparkly effect of the bicarb, but still gave a nice snow look and probably a much more durable play surface.

The hill is probably a bit too sharp for my liking. I had hoped that it wouldn't look like it just jutted out of a flat piece of ground, but without making the whole tile a piece of carved foam, this is probably the best it's going to be.

Make sure you undercoat the piece with white paint before applying the modelling paste, as some areas are darker where the board shows through and especially where the paste has been applied on top of the bark.

The modelling paste worked very well as it has some flex when dried which meant I could bend out any warping of the board to ensure it lay flat
