  1. Overall, it feel like there’s something missing here, but I can’t really put my finger on it.

    Nice work, I like the cream, and those hounds look fantastic. They are great models and deserve a bright paintjob.

    Do you think the 'something missing' is 'highlighting'? Maybe you've done some, and it just doesn't come up in photographs. I know my photos of my own models eliminate all highlights.

  2. The whole Ortegas(or Perdita) = Win idea has long gone away most places. In a lot of circles people think she isn't very good at all.

    Hmm, I was avoiding her because she's too good, now I'm avoiding her because she isn't very good at all!

    the very least take a look at Santiago and Nino, both of which many people think are prime Guild models

    Oh okay. I'll look.

  3. I love the table on McMourning's base! I think that both the table and McMourning should be pushed together to the centre of the base: having them overhanging the edges, when there's all that space in the middle, looks odd. It may just be the photo.

  4. Fantastic! The photos of your model do the model more justice than the stock ones from Wyrd. I knew the model would be great but those shots slightly put me off.

    D.

    I have shunned the Pale Rider because of the studio scheme, though I thought I was shunning it because of the model. Glad to see it can appeal to me! I may have to get one.

  5. I am alarmed to see that I have not gone down the suggested path! :)

    I picked up an eBay deal on the Hoffman Box + Peacekeeper. I bought three Witchling Stalkers because they're living and anti-magic. I'm planning on getting another Watcher to bring this up to 35 points, and Sonnia to replace Hoffman for playing against magical crews.

    After that, I'm planning on the Lucius Box, to get me some ranged potential. After that, maybe the Lady Justice Box, but I feel I have the melee game sewn up already. ;)

    I hope I haven't made a dreadful mistake in ignoring the Ortegas on the basis of cheese.

  6. I think the handshake thing was a pretty easy misunderstanding.

    I've never been to a tournament, and if my opponent shook my hand during a game, without saying anything, I would not be able to guess what they meant. I'd be confused, and probably think they were trying to compliment me in an ironically solemn manner!

    If the game is still in progress, shaking hands could mean claiming victory, or it could mean conceding the game. If you opponent doesn't accompany the handshake with words to the effect of 'I've won' or 'I concede', you're none the wiser.

    Furthermore, if you continue to play, you're demonstrating that you think the game is continuing, so good grace would be to allow the game to continue!

  7. There are two problems with this

    1) It takes away one of the things that makes Malifaux unique. Its the only popular mini game where you actually create your crew/army/horde etc after knowing your objectives and opponents faction. The whole concept of drafting a crew each round is a big draw for some tournament players

    2) Preconstructed lists can lead to uniformity and games won and lost before they are event played. It moves the challenge from the game being played to who can come up with(or find online) the best all comers list.

    I agree those are problems. I was trying to add to the discussion about balance. Maybe things like fun and variety have to take a back seat if balance is the goal.*

    *Can you please read this in a non-snarky voice? I can't seem to get the tone right! :)

  8. Tokens and Counters are different things. Corpse, scrap, eye, and body part are all Counters (can be placed on the board, can stack infinitely high) and are all 30 mil. Tokens: only one that is coming to mind is Burning. These are not placed on the table and don't need any distinct shape.

    (...)

    (Sorry to nerd out on the counters/tokens thing. I'm not as serious as all that.)

    This is just what I needed! Nerdy is good. I kept seeing references to 'Burning Tokens', and was picturing a kind of template.

    All I need to make are two 50mm Flame Wall tokens. Now... are these ALWAYS deployed adjacent to each other, i.e. I can actually sculpt a wall of flame that covers two bases?

  9. Yeah, ranged is an issue: a single harpoon probably won't cut it, right? :)

    I see this list as a mobile melee force, sending the Watchers to the objectives and using the Master-Guardian-Peacekeeper ball as a magnet for the opposing crew. I'll use this to learn the game, using Hoffman for objectives and Sonnia for attrition.

    Long-term, I want to develop more of a gunline, to counter any opponents who like melee. I'll definitely pick up an Austringer and a Warden when it's out. I want to get the Lucius box, to add Ryle (for Hoffman) and some Guardsmen (for Sonnia). Also, Lucius as a third Master, who I gather runs kind of a mobile gunline: perhaps the best of both worlds.

    I'd really want Hoffman's Totem in there instead of a Witchling - if nothing else as a ranged machine puppet.

    I haven't heard anything good about the Mechanical Attendant. If anything, I've been told to get the Mobile Toolkit instead. Enlighten me!

    I have played with the Pale Rider in Hoff's crew and have had a great time and success using him. Just a thought

    I would like to run the Pale Rider, it sounds great: out on its own section of board, ducking in and out of cover, popping that rifle: awesome!

    I just can't get over the horrific sculpt. And it's a weird zombie horse with horns. Doesn't fit my theme, aesthetically. Maybe I could greenstuff some flames on it.

  10. Hmm, thanks guys. Sounds like I can counter Ramos and McMourning with Hoffman by detonating any scrap counters I produce.

    So far I'm looking at the following all-rounder 35 point list:

    Guardian

    Peacekeeper

    Watcher x2

    Witchling Stalker x3

    Then Hoffman for objective scenarios, and Sonnia (alt sculpt) for damage-dealing scenarios.

  11. I'm looking to branch out into Sonnia, and I like making bits.

    I know I'll need a Flame Wall, i.e. two 50mm markers to be placed adjacent to each other. I'll need mine to be pretty flat, so I can harpoon fools onto them.

    What else am I going to need? How big do Blast Tokens and Burning Markers have to be? And how many will I need?

    Anyone got any tips for making fire effects? I'm thinking of using water-effect goo, and teasing it into flame shapes.

  12. If you want a quick and easy way of painting, you can't go wrong with the 'dip method'.

    Purchase:

    • a can of black undercoat spray;
    • a single medium brush;
    • half a dozen little pots of acrylic paint: brown, silver, black, white, flesh if you're painting humans, and your choice of 'team colour'.

    Do each stage en masse for a group of models:

    • Spray with black undercoat;
    • Paint leather, boots, belts, straps etc. brown;
    • Choose a 'team colour' and apply it to coats, hats, scarves etc.;
    • Paint flesh some kind of flesh colour;
    • Paint metal and weapons silver;
    • Liberally apply dark brown wood varnish to the whole model.

    The wood varnish will magically shade your models, bring out the detail, and also make them indestructible.

  13. Huh. I've been looking at my Thor Steinhammer's blowtorch flame for months, and I couldn't understand what was wrong it it. I've just realised that I based it in red, and worked up orange and yellow highlights. You're right, I should have done it the other way round!

    I could just turn the flame upside down and make it an orange soda cannon...
