I was originally going to pass up Sandeep in favour of Reva, but his background made me reconsider. Also: Gamin! It'll be interesting to see if all the gamin have the same conditions for summoning or if there's specific requirements for each type.

That would be a pretty messy rule if there were 7 different conditions for summoning.

I'm actually quite excited at the idea of the Arcanists bringing the Valedictorian and Students along, that's a nice bit of additional list help there!

I always thought the students sure would benefit from regeneration +1, causing burning, and the ability to place themselves within 6" on an (0) action.

Valedictorian with imbued energies and/or warding runes sounds pretty delicious too.

  3. 1-2 rail workers is a nice thing to include for anyone - a nice solid hard hitting model and resilient model (a third gets fairly card hungry).

Kang is amazing, but unfortunately just for Mei (Mei + Kang is a nice option to have around when facing Ressers).

Mei herself I honestly consider one of the best starter masters - she's a direct, straightforward model that has some depth (which isn't too complicated to get a handle on) once you get used to her.

Ramos' box gives lots of models that Mei gets great use out of.

  4. I'd say Kaeris is among the harder masters to get a handle on - she suffers from "one too few actions" syndrome, unless you're taking the emissary to patch her.

Mei is easy to get a handle on (jump in and combo punch stuff), and not hard to get a handle on her full breadth of options (eg, once you learn to rely on vent steam).

Hmm this is a hard one, I find my fun is more based on my enemy player then there master. For instance I played Mason Hamelin and had a blast but vs someone's Kaeres I could not wait for it to end. I feel that NPE based on masters is forgetting that half the experience is the human element.

I'm trying to imagine how you could make Kaeris a NPE and honestly can't think of how you would.

Sandeep seems tough but easy to hit. He might be third most durable Arcanist master after Colette and Ramos. If he has some healing hidden behind his card or on his upgrades he might rank even higher.

Tough to rank him over Marcus, who also has a pass off ability.

However, without seeing the upgrades, we can't tell how resilient the masters actually are. Bengt's analysis is about as in-depth as is appropriate at this point.

  7. Ramos is a nice master for a beginner to be effective, but his playstyle encourages a slower buildup that is at odds with what really wins games of malifaux (eg, be careful not to just sit back summoning spiders).

But malifaux is a funny game and there will be a learning curve regardless. Read up on pullmyfinger and choose the master you like the look and playstyle description of. Some will need a bit more of a purchase to get started, while others are pretty much ready to go out of the box.

I dont know if I would call the Arcane Emissary the strongest though I would offer that he is probably most likely to see regular play. That build is really accommodating to most of the faction compared to some of the other Emissaries. I tend to agree that the Carrion Emissary might be the strongest of them, particularly because of the Shards of Nythera Action. There is an awful lot of utility in that single 0 action.

Arcane emissary is really easy to fit into most arcanist crews because it's a very direct model - it's a charge 10 model that hands out a free (1) action, has a brutal one-use charge attack, has an (0) to throw out that last bit of damage and kill a model, with some pushes and scheme/corpse removal thrown in for good measure. The fact that several of it's unique upgrades are very useful is just a bonus (the fact that these don't fit with how direct of a model it wants to be probably hurts it). The fact that it's one of the more resilient emissaries helps with its use too.

edit: To contrast with what Trikk said about the brutal emissary - you don't need to plan around the arcane emissary - it's a big, simple, effective model that *can* provide some bonuses to augment your master's playstyle if necessary.

  9. Yeah, if your opponent is continually taking lots of anti-armour against arcanists, you can use that against them. The faction is now full of masters that don't rely on constructs.

Raspy, Marcus, Ironsides, Kaeris (*I know she herself has armour +1) and Colette can all use effective crews without relying on models with armour. Every now and then, but enough so your opponent notices, it's a good idea to play these crews so your opponent isn't rewarded for taking anti-armour. Doing this also forces you to learn to use other models in the faction, which is valuable in the long-run.

I play them off-and-on. Every single time I find myself really wishing they still had Hard to Kill. I know it's mostly luck, but they never end up on one wound. Either they get one-shot for six damage, or they take four damage with two wounds or (surprise surprise) my opponent brings anti-armor when I declare Arcanists and the gamin is pretty easily smushed. Yeah I'm still bitter about the errata, but I know my experience is probably not the norm.

Time to start taking lists that don't rely on armour!

They look very WWX to me. And I'm playing Malifaux instead of WWX due to the aesthetic. So yeah, not for me. I can understand that a Nightmare box doesn't necessarily need to look "canon" as such but this is the least Malifauxian Nightmare release so far.

As models they are rather cool but I don't like them as Malfiaux models.

Oh well, a Nightmare box being not to my liking is probably the smallest problem a person can have, so the sky most certainly isn't falling.

The crew fits very well with the Crossroads 7. It's not my personal preference, but I can see why others like the aesthetic.

For the first time I can honestly say I'm disappointed in Wyrd. Levi was very well tested during the beta and balanced by you and the community. The fact that you are willing to ignore that makes me ashamed that I've been telling people how much different you were as a company.

They didn't ignore feedback. They published him based on that feedback. Far more feedback showed he needed to be toned down. It's not even remotely comparable how little a given master was playtested over the few months of beta and what has been played since (particular when rules were changing week by week during beta). Even in beta, Levi's crew was problematic (included several complete overhauls) but the published rules were considered 'close enough' to publish.

  13. In terms of including toolbox models, Ramos, Colette, and Marcus are great boxes (Howard, Joss, Cassandra, Performers, Myranda, Cojo, and Sabretooth).

Kaeris and Ironsides starters each have a nice henchman, but aren't really boxes that will contribute a ton to most arcanist lists.

Mei Feng and Rasputina's boxes are full of specialists that other arcanist masters won't use much.
