  1. Thanks for the tips, I will pass them along to Jen (until I can get her to nerd up and create a forum account ^^ ). We talked about the game afterwards and I think right now her biggest problem is juggling all of her options while keeping in mind how I can employ all of mine at the same time.

For example, in game 2 it didn't occur to her that I still had Bete Noir in my toybox when she let Lady J become exhausted within range of both Seamus and my workbench. However I chalk this up to her inexperience in wargames and we're hoping with practice she can start to lay the smackdown on me.

  2. Oh crap I completely forgot the blocking rule during that move; it seems like the only time i remember it is when I think I'm doing something particularly clever directly dependent on the rule.

Also curses to the no master frogs leg errata, we're really starting to see its usefulness in avoiding blocking/walls/etc.

Along the same note, Jen and I both didn't rate the malifaux cherub and the nurse at first, but with more games she is really loving the Malifaux-esque Obey-style rule to give her fighty puppets another attack. And bath time is a great spell to counter Lady J's Powerful stack.

Do you guys like the style we used, with a picture after each animation round and voiceover/arrows for explanation? Would it be useful to hear more details about the cards we flipped and whether or not dodges occurred? Is helpful if we point out every time someone pockets a card or burns it to move instead of animating? Were our voiceovers too monotone and scripted? Is our jargon ("pocketing", "burning", "casting", etc.) easy enough to understand or should we stick to book terms?

The editing is a lot of work for Jen but if you guys enjoyed the video we can do another and include any suggestions to make it better.

  3. Edit: see PandaDirector's post below for the correct ruling.

@Doctor Lucky: unless I missed something about the situation or the rules, I don't think there was anything wrong with what the judge did. The book states you get 2 Moves, 1 Action, and as many different Free Actions as you want per activation, and that they can be done in any order (move-attack-move, atack-move-move, etc). So I think it is okay for Judge to Move once, Action Attack once, Move once, then Free Action Mine the workbench.

Is it possible that you are confusing Malifaux rules with Puppet Wars rules? My girlfriend actually called me on that because I was counting Moves as Actions due to my recent malifaux games. I dont have the book with me, but I'm almost positive a Move is separate from an Action, and you always get 2 Moves and 1 Action, and a Multitasker would get 2 Moves and 2 Actions (so seamus could move twice, cast one spell, then make a Strike/Attack action once)

    hope this helps

  4. I stack my Puppet Wars with the rest of my boardgames and rarely bring it out of the house, so I wanted a sturdier box for it at home. I picked up this hinged mirror-box in a Michael's discount bin and cut some Battlefoam down to size. You can see how perfectly the starter set fits into the foam and leaves a nice slot at the close end for my card decks and stat cards.

  5. Hello,

I love the kitty Hoarcat pride models and the Wendigo model and I will be getting them just to paint up and use in fun games, but I'm also looking for tips on how I can be more competitive with them.

From what I can tell, by dropping the Essence of Power (the model of which I like far less) for the Wendigo I give up that sexy + damage modifier for a 2ss sub-par bodyguard. Is this a fair assessment?

For the hoarcat pride, I'm thinking of running them as teams of 2 for the better Devour spell, but their damage arc special rules make me feels like they will never kill a model to recover their wounds.

I think I'm in that old problem of power-versus-preference where I like the models but not the stats, so any tips on how to combine them would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

  6. the first involves targeting, which I can't seem to find in the rulebook right now, and the second involves stacking and the "effects of the same name" rules:

    1) can Rasputina cast December's Touch on herself?

    2) If I cast December's Touch on the Ice Golem do the armours stack for a total of +4 or does the spell's armour +2 replace his natural +2?

    thanks

  7. I don't know if this is the right section, sorry if it isn't.

So I've searched the forums and found threads on which armies to use, at what size, and how to present the game when demoing it for people, but...

    1) Should I use ALL the rules for Malifaux or introduce a group of them each game (puppet wars-style).

    2) Also, should I throw all the rules at them as we start the game or bring up each rule as it's applicable?

Finally a friendly critique of Wyrd; as someone just getting into the game it would have been nice to have the option of a "beginner's box" that came complete with two armies, two card decks, and intro as well as expanded rules. As a longtime wargamer I was okay getting into Malifaux without a local Henchman, but I'm thinking there's a lot of people who don't want to surf the web to find two balanced armies and study the rulebook before their first game. Just sayin :)

  8. As I am in a veritable Malifaux desert I plan on picking up 2 starter boxes and learning the game then running demos for my friend in order to lure my Warhammer friends in. I want Perdita as "my" crew but I need a second crew that fulfills the following requirements:

    1) provides a balanced fight against Perdita box-vs-box without blister packs.

    2) NOT guild as I want the allure of different fluff/styles

    3) will allow the 2 crews to engage in multiple forms of combat (i.e. I don't want to pick up a second crew that will have us taking potshots at each other all game, I want close combat, casting, and ranged to be shown off in demos)

I like Rasputina's fluff but as I am a newb I have know clue if the out-of-the-box matchup will work and be fun on both sides. Will she work, and who else might I consider?

    thanks
